The top one shows the central office section of the building with sections of rooms to its right and left. Lawn furniture is on the grass in front of the motel, as well as a flower bed, and signs in front of the office section give the name of the motel and also include "Air Conditioned," "Television," and "AAA." A Gulf service station is visible in the background. The bottom image shows the back of the building with a swimming pool in front of it. The pool has a diving board, and there are tables with red and green shade umbrellas and a lounge chair beside it. In the caption on the back of the card, Mr. and Mrs. R. Milton McDow are named as the owners and operators. Printed between the message and address sections is: "Pub. by Pat & Mildred Murphree, P. O. Box 8685, Dallas 16, Texas. Henderson's Garage, Marshall, Texas

Black and white halftone postcard showing Henderson's Garage in Marshall, Texas, located on the south side of the square, west of the city hall. The service bays were inserted into an older one-story brick masonry building. The two open bays have a sign above them saying "Auto Repair Shop" and a smaller sign between them saying "Gasoline 10 cents." The third bay is closed with a bench in front of it, and the fourth bay has the sign "Accessories" above it. Above all four bays a projecting corrugated iron canopy has "Ford" painted in large letters on it. "Henderson's Garage" is painted on the brick wall above the canopy and a separate commercial sign saying "Henderson's Garage" is mounted on top of the brick facade wall. Printed at the top of the image in red ink is the title "Henderson's Garage, Marshall, Texas." Printed on the left edge of the back: "39288 - Frey Wholesale Post Card Co., Pubs., Dallas." The card is addressed to Mrs. John Eguer, Garfield, Minn.

[Home of the Governor of Missouri during the Civil War 1863-1865]

Photograph of a two-story hipped-roof house with wood siding that served as the Missouri Governor's house from 1863-1865 during the Civil War. The Governor rented it from Mrs. Mary Key. It was located at 204 East Crockett St. Architectural details indicate that the house was expanded and updated after the Civil War, later in the 19th century. Inscription in ink on the back of the photograph states: "Home of the governor of Missouri during the Civil War 1866."

Hotel Ginocchio, Marshall, Texas

Color tinted halftone postcard of the Ginocchio Hotel, Marshall, Texas, 705 N. Washington Ave. The view is from the northeast, showing the north side of the building and part of the east side. Corbelled bricks mark the top of the second floor. Square towers mark the corners of the building A shed roof supported by poles covers the sidewalk on the north and east sides of the building, and windows and doors are visible beneath it. There are several brick chimneys. The two-story brick, gable-roof building was designed by architect C. G. Lancaster in 1896. It was built as a railroad hotel, close to the railroad depot. Printed on the top of the image is the title, "Hotel Ginocchio, Marshall, Texas." There is no postmark or message on the back of the card.

Color halftone postcard of the Hotel Marshall, 210 E. Houston St., Marshall, Texas, which was built in 1929. The view is taken from the east and shows the facade and east side of the eight story building, as well as part of the two-story red brick Mahon Building to the hotel's east. There is a sidewalk canopy across the facade with 2nd floor balcony on top of it and what appears to be a terrace surrounding the eighth floor. There are automobiles parked on the street. A metal structure on top of the roof supports a large lighted sign that says "Hotel Marshall." Printed on the back at the end of the image caption: "Ektachrome by Helen O'Brien. Printed at the bottom of the message section: "Pub by Eastex Photo Supply, Marshall, Texas. 380-D-7, 63188. Hotel Marshall, Marshall, Texas

Color tinted halftone postcard of ca. 1907-1915 showing the Hotel Marshall, Marshall, Texas. It is a straight facade view with parts of the neighboring buildings visible. The hotel's three-story building has a sidewalk canopy across the full facade with multipaned clerestory windows above the canopy. A fire escape on the second bay from the right leads from the third story to the canopy and has a ladder from the third story to the roof. Two boys stand leaning on either side of a five-globe street light on the sidewalk in front of the building. A horse and buggy stand on the street to their right, and two men with straw hats sit next to the right side of the building. The horse is hitched to a ring in the sidewalk. Printed in black ink on the lower left border below the image is the title "Hotel Marshall, Marshall, Texas." There is no postmark or message on the back. The code A-68238 is printed on the back at the top left of the address section. Printed between the message and address sections: "C. T. American Art" and the logo of an intertwined C and T Co, Chicago in a circle.

It is a two-story side-gable house of five bays with a two-story portico with four columns. Three dormer windows are in the roof. In the book "Hsitoric Marshall Revisited" by Edward W. Plummer, it is identified as the Fletcher Home, built in 1929 from the remains of a two-story house demolished by Henry McGee.

It is a Greek Revival style raised cottage, with brick lower portion and wood siding on the main floor. A 1920s automobile with a canvas top is parked in front of the house. Black and white halftone postcard showing the interior of the Jenkins Crystal Palace Drug Store in Marshall, Texas. The view shows an octagonal floor display case in the foreground and display case counters along both sides with shelves behind them. There appears to be a narrow balcony at a mezzanine level at the back. Garlands of large paper flowers decorate the sides of the room and the central hanging light fixtures. The stock is arranged in an ornamental decorative manner and includes a large cylindrical jar or container of canes on the left front. Faint pink coloring highlights the contents of the central octagonal case. Printed at the bottom in black ink below the image is the title "Interior of Jenkins Crystal Palace Drug Store, Marshall, Texas. The postmark on the back does not include a year. Interior Trinity Episcopal Church, Marshall, Texas

Color halftone postcard of the interior of Trinity Episcopal Church, Marshall, Texas, located at the northeast corner of N. Grove St. and W. Houston St., probably photographed in the 1920s. The view is taken from the back of the church looking up the aisle toward the altar with the pews on either side. A dominant feature is the open timber roof. Pointed-arch Gothic revival stained glass windows are on both sides and behind the altar. Eight ceiling fans are visible. Printed on the back between the message and address spaces: "C. T. American Art Colored" and a small logo of a circle with the letters C T Co overlapping in the center and Chicago below them.

[Invitation to the Joint Session of the Literary Societies of the Sam Houston Normal Institute, Huntsville, Texas, May 26, 1900]

The three pages of this invitation and program are tied into a folded cover of linen paper. The front cover has intertwined raised initials, S, H, N, I (for Sam Houston Normal Institute), and above them is printed an image in red and blue ink of a Texas flag with the initials S.H.N.I. flying from the top of the flag pole. The first page within the cover is the printed invitation to the Joint Session of the Literary Societies of the Sam Houston Normal Institute, held in Memorial Hall, Huntsville, Texas, May 26, 1900. In the top left corner of the invitation page is a lithographic image by C. A. Wright, Philadelphia, that depicts a variety of scholarly and literary objects arranged on a cloth-covered table. The second page consists of the program for the event. The third page lists the names of nine literary societies: Lone Star, Athena, Baldwin, Houstonian, Philomathean, Eclectic, House, Ross, and Senate. Handwritten in ink on the back of the cover are the words "Mom's graduation program Mary McAlister McCutchan," probably written at a later date by her daughter-in-law Johnnie McCutchan.

Jerusalem Baptist Church, Marshall, Texas

Black and white photo-postcard of the Jerusalem Baptist Church in Marshall, Texas, taken sometime in the 1940s. The one-story brick building with basement has a central entrance tower with a hipped roof, which projects from a front gable-roofed main section with a side gable section behind it. It is a simple, unornamented building, except for the round arched entrance with three rows of corbelled brick surrounding the doors and two square pillars on either side of the entrance supporting lamps. The church is built on a slope, which allows for "basement" rooms beneath the back part of the building. The windows appear to be casement windows, and one in the back wing is partially open. A metal frame perpendicular to the road holds a sign with information about the church, but the text is not readable due to the angle. The back of a small house is visible behind the church. At the bottom of the image in white letters is the title, "Jerusalem Baptist Church - Marshall, Texas. 6-J-91" There is no postmark or message on the back of the card. Junior High School, Marshall, Texas

Black and white photo-postcard of the the junior high school in Marshall, Texas, taken sometime in the 1940s or early 1950s. The brick building of two stories on a raised basement was built in 1924 as the new high school. It became the junior high school in 1939 when a new high school building was constructed. The central entrance is in an English Gothic Academic style. At the bottom of the image in white letters is the title, "Junior High School - Marshall, Texas. 6-J-12" There is no postmark or message on the back of the card. The format, quality, and number code are almost identical to another card in this collection with the publisher's name W. M. Cline Co., Chattanooga, printed on it, and this card was probably produced by the same company.

Kahn Memorial Hospital, Marshall, Texas

Color halftone postcard of the Kahn Memorial Hospital, in Marshall, Texas. The image was probably taken in the late 1930's or early 1940's. The building was opened in 1928. The card is printed on linen style paper. A note on the back says "Our trip, 1934-1937," but the code on the front of the card dates it to 1942. The view shows the red brick hospital building of two-stories on raised basement, but most of the building is obscured by tree branches. Two people are sitting on a bench in front of the left portion of the building. Printed in the white border below the image is the title, "Kahn Memorial Hospital, Marshall, Texas," and the code "2B482-N." Black and white photo-postcard of the Laura Virginia Groner Hall, East Texas Baptist College, in Marshall, Texas, taken sometime in the 1940s or early 1950s. The two-story brick dormitory has a wide full-height entrance porch with six square columns and with three dormers and a central cupola in the roof. All of the windows have shutters. [Letter from Lewis McCutchan to Mary McAllister McCutchan and Marion Sims McCutchan - June 28, 1922]

Letter from Lewis McCutchan to his parents Mary and Marion Sims McCutchan discussing his work at the Harrison County Y.M.C.A. Camp for Boys, Taylor's Island, Karnack, Texas. He describes his duties, including being in charge of the cook's tent and dining hall. He mentioned that they went for a motor boat ride, and that it was his first. He comments on the boys' opinions of him as being strict, and his opinion that many of the boys had had very little discipline at home. The letter is written on camp stationery that includes a halftone image of camp staff and boys standing in a double line.
