Photo-postcard of the Marshall, Texas, post office building showing the facade and the west side of the building. The windows and front doors are open, and one car is parked in front of the entrance. The building is located at 100 E. Houston St. Bushes have been planted across the front and side of the building. Three signs are mounted on the sidewalk, and there is a metal trash bin with a pyramidal top next to the flagpole at the right corner of the building. The title at the bottom of the image is "U. S.Post Office - Marshall, Texas" and the code 6-J-14 is on the lower right. There is no postmark or message on the back of the card. The format, quality, and number code are almost identical to another card in this collection with the publisher's name W. M. Cline Co., Chattanooga, printed on it, and this card was probably produced by the same company.

It appears that the porch was later changed with a projecting gable front bay on the right and wraparound porch on the left.

Photograph of an unidentified house in Marshall, Texas. It is a two-story L-plan house with a one-story projecting bay window. The first floor is faced with vertical and horizontal wood siding, while the second story and front gable are faced with shingle siding. A three-bay one story porch projects from the long side of the L. The porch ornament includes turned spindles and jig-sawn arches above turned columns. The house is in a dilapidated condition, with paint worn off and two visible broken windows. Part of a small building, perhaps a carriage house, is visible in the lower left of the photograph.

The porch has decorative millwork, or gingerbread, painted in a contrasting color. The house is on a raised site, with a low retaining wall next to the sidewalk and concrete steps leading up from the sidewalk to the entrance walk.

Washington Avenue - Looking North - Marshall, Texas
Photo-postcard of North Washington St. looking north from the courthouse in Marshall, Texas, ca. 1940s or early 1950s. Commercial buildings line both sides of the streets and automobiles are parked on both sides of the street. Commercial signs on the buildings include on the left, the Leader department store, Erick P. Littlejohn insurance company, a drug store and a cafe, and on the right, Recknagel's drug store , Austin Shoes, and Dan Cohen Shoes. Traffic lights hang from wires in the center of the street. The building on the right corner has a second floor balcony all along the side above the sidewalk canopy. At the bottom of the image is the title "Washington Avenue - Looking North - Marshall, Texas." The code 6-J-18 is on the lower right. There is no postmark or message on the back. The format, quality, and number code are almost identical to another card in this collection with the publisher's name W. M. Color halftone postcard showing a campus view of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. The college, established in Marshall in 1873, is the oldest African-American institute of higher education west of the Mississippi River. The view shows what appears to be a lawn tennis court with a number of spectators standing to watch a match. Two red brick academic buildings are behind the courts and the crowd. A low wire fence with iron supports is closest to the camera, and what appears to be a higher netted fence to stop tennis balls is inside of the lower fence. Printed in the border above the image is the title, "Wiley College, Marshall, Texas," and the code 9B537-N is printed in the lower right corner of the border below the image. Printed on the back of the card on the left edge of the message section: "Distributed by Eastex Photo Supply, Marshall, Texas." Printed between the message and address sections: "Genuine Curteich-Chicago 'C.T. American Art' post card (Reg. U. S. Pat. Off.}" There is no postmark or message on the back of the card.

The college, established in Marshall in 1873, is the oldest African-American institute of higher education west of the Mississippi River. The view shows two red brick academic buildings on the right with bushes and sidewalks in front of them and another brick academic building further back on the left. What appears to be a one-story building is partially visible behind some trees in the center background. He is standing in front of a photographer's backdrop showing a curtain and elaborate fireplace and one of his hands rests on the upholstered arm of a settee. He is wearing a military style jacket. The photographer's imprint on the bottom of the card is P. F. Goben, 317 East Mulberry St., Sherman, Tex. The inscription on the back indicates that it was taken while he was a student at Austin College in the 1880s.
