Bundle flower
Photograph of Bundle flower (Illinois Desmathus), a native legume being tested at the Woodward Experiment Station, shows promise to be included in native grass mixtures and Weeping Lovegrass. The plant is palatable in younger stages, but more research is needed before widespread use is recommended.

Clean Tilled Land vs Crop Residue Management
Photograph of this is a contrast picture. The St. Paul silt loam has been planted to wheat on clean tilled land. Many of Northwest Oklahoma's seasons are too droughty and windy. A wind storm will damage this land and cause the farmer to loose his stand of wheat.

Depletion of the Land, Sheet and Gully Erosion
Photograph of the intensity of homesteading contributed to the cultivation of land that wa too steep and shallow. Consequently, many inches of high fertility topsoil were removed by sheet and gully erosion to be forever lost for man's use. Such depletion of the land can only mean less intensive use, lower yields, and evidently a lower standard of living for the nation. Quinlan-Woodward loam, 5 to 12% slope. Shallow Range Site.

Disected Gypsum Bedrock
Photograph of a tributary of the Cimarron River has dissected the gypsum bedrock. Notice the many directions that the bedrock is tilling as it is effected by this dissection. Where tributaries are relatively close, the gypsum rock is tilled in all directions which causes the breaking and heaping of the bedrock and the exposure of the underlain clay to water that eroded small caves, bridges, etc. Canyons are usually Vernon clay loam, 5 to 12% slope of the Shallow Range Site. Foreground is Cottonwood-Vernon complex of the Gypsum Range Site.
