Cherokee County Loamy Prairie Range

Photograph of a Loamy Prairie range site located in Cherokee County, which is in excellent condition. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Loamy Prairie range site in excellent range condition. The soils are Eldorado Craig. The vegetation is primarily big bluestem, little bluestem and Indiangrass. Woody species consisting of blackberry, persimmon, sumac and sassafras, are scattered sparsely over the site."

This field yielded approximately 200 pounds dry seed per acre for 55 acres. 2 tons of agricultural limestone [= calcium carbonate] and 160 pounds of 0-20-0 fertilizer per acre were applied in 1951. The hay was cut this year in early June, mostly as cheat grass. OK-166-5.
