40 mm bore Nb-Ti model dipole magnet (open access)

40 mm bore Nb-Ti model dipole magnet

Preliminary R and D has been started on magnets for a next-generation high-energy-physics accelerator, the 20 TeV Superconducting Supercollider (SSC). One design now being developed at LBL is described in this paper. The design is based on two layers of flattened Nb-Ti cable, a 40 mm ID winding with flared ends, and an operating field of 6.5 T. Experimental results are presented on several one-meter-long models tested at both He I and He II temperature. Measurement of field, residual magnetization, quench propagation velocity, and winding prestress are presented. (A 2-in-1 magnet based on this coil design is being jointly developed by LBL and Brookhaven National Laboratory, and 15 ft. long models are being constructed at BNL).

Accelerator-based plasma-wall interaction studies on the TEXTOR tokamak (open access)

Accelerator-based plasma-wall interaction studies on the TEXTOR tokamak

Deposition probes are commonly used to determine plasma edge characteristics in tokamaks. Such probes are frequently analyzed using accelerator-based techniques and can yield information on impurity fluxes, hydrogen fluxes and energies, and surface erosion rates in the plasma edge. Several types of deposition probes have been employed to investigate the plasma edge region of the TEXTOR tokamak in Juelich, FRG. TEXTOR is a moderate size tokamak (major radius = 1.75 m) that is capable of 2 to 3 s discharges and contains a liner that can be heated to 600/sup 0/C. These capabilities make TEXTOR particularly attractive for the study of plasma-wall interactions. Several countries, including the United States, Sweden and the host nation, are carrying on active research programs in the area of plasma-edge studies. This research has included measurements of plasma, impurity, and power fluxes at various radii in the scrapeoff layer. The results achieved in characterizing the plasma edge in these recent probe studies on TEXTOR will be reviewed.

Accuracy of the Finite Analytic Method for Scalar Transport Calculations (open access)

Accuracy of the Finite Analytic Method for Scalar Transport Calculations

The accuracy of the finite analytic method of discretizing fluid flow equations is assessed through calculations of multidimensional scalar transport. The transport of a scalar function in a uniform velocity flow field inclined with the finite-difference grid lines is calculated for a range of grid Peclet numbers and flow skewness. The finite analytic method is observed to be superior to the approach of constructing finite-difference analogs from locally one-dimensional resolution of the flow vector. However, the finite analytic method also produces appreciable errors locally in regions of steep variations, under conditions of large grid Peclet numbers, and skewness of the streamlines.

Actual versus design performance of solar systems in the National Solar Data Network (open access)

Actual versus design performance of solar systems in the National Solar Data Network

This report relates field measured performance to the designer predicted performance. The field measured data was collected by the National Solar Data Network (NSDN) over a period of six years. Data from 25 solar systems was selected from a data pool of some 170 solar systems. The scope of the project extends beyond merely presenting comparisons of data. There is an attempt to provide answers which will move the solar industry forward. As a result of some industry and research workshops, several concerns arose which can be partially allayed by careful study of the NSDN data. These are: What types of failures occurred and why. How good was the design versus actual performance. Why was predicted performance not achieved in the field. Which components should be integrated with a system type for good performance. Since the designs span several years and since design philosophies are quite variable, the measured results were also compared to f-Chart 5.1 results. This comparison is a type of normalization in that all systems are modeled with the same process. An added benefit of this normalization is a further validation of the f-Chart model on a fairly large scale. The systems were modeled using equipment design …

All solid state high voltage power supply for neutral beam sources (open access)

All solid state high voltage power supply for neutral beam sources

The conceptual design of a high frequency solid state, high power, high voltage, power system that reacts fast enough to be compatible with the requirements of a neutral beam source is presented. The system offers the potential of significant advantages over conventional power line frequency systems; such as high reliability, long life, relatively little maintenance requirements, compact size and modular design.
