Abrasive Cutting of Irradiated Uranium

The preparation of radioactive metallurgical specimens for microscopic examination is one of the responsibilities of the Radiometallurgy Sub-Unit. An abrasive cut-off machine development program, based upon a previous experimental model, was undertaken to provide a method for sectioning of irradiated materials without undue personnel exposure or spread of contamination and finally to provide data for the design of an abrasive cutting unit for use in the work cells in the Radiometallurgy Building. A horizontal-feed type set-off machine, powered by a 7 1/2 hp motor with V-belt drive, has been developed for the submerged sectioning of irradiated uranium and is currently being used successfully to obtain samples for metallurgical, chemical and physical investigations without excessive personnel exposure or spread of radioactive contaminates.

Additional Experiments on Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite

In the memorandum entitled "Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite", dated February 25, 1953, there is described an experiment conducted by Gurinsky's group to determine the energy per gram of irradiated graphite released in a 200°C anneal. Similar experiments were subsequently conducted by W. Kosiba, differing from the original in two particulars: a) Instead of two graphite samples, one normal, and one irradiated, Kosiba used only an irradiated sample which he heated first to release the stored energy, and then again after the energy was released. In this way, he obtained time against temperature curves for both normal and irradiated graphite from the same sample. (These curves are graphed for each run in Figs. 1 thru 5.) b) The vycor tubing used in the original experiment was not used by Kosiba. Five runs of this experiment were selected, Runs 4P, 13, 36, and 40 at furnace temperatures of 200°C, and Run 45 at a furnace temperature of 400°C.

An Alternate Interpretation of the Results on then p-Meson Decay Electron Spectrum

We have preliminarily reported the interpretation of our experimental results that the intensity of the spectrum at the maximum energy was zero. But, as reported in the second paper UCRL-1261 we found that the results may also be fitted to a different spectrum with finite intensity at the maximum energy. Quite recently, however, the most probable value for the mass of the p-meson has been revised by two independent groups based on two different experiments.

The Analysis of TBP Process Streams for Calcium with the Flame Photometer

Summary: A method was found for determining calcium concentrations in TBP process streams in spite of serious interferences bysodium, ferrous, uranyl, sulfate, phosphate, and sulfamate ions as well as by TBP. The precision attainable varied from sample to sample, depending upon its composition. In general, errors of 20% or greater occurred. The smallest determinable amount of calcium was about 10 mg/1.

Angular Distribution of Fragments from Neutron-Induced Fission

The angular distribution of fission fragments from the neutron-induced fission of several isotopes has been studied. Distributions were observed for thermal neutrons on U233 and U235, Lady Godiva leakage neutrons on U235 and U238, and 14 Mev neutrons on U233, U235, U238, Th232, and Np237. No anisotropy was observed for thermal neutron fission, whereas for Lady Godiva neutrons and 14 Mev neutrons the probability of fission along the axis of the neutron beam was determined to be higher than for fission in the orthogonal direction. Experimental results are given on pages 10 and ll.

The angular distribution of the reaction p + p--w+ + d has been measured with the meson and deuteron detected in coincidence. Measurements were made at 30' and 90' in the center of mass system for an incident proton energy of 338 Mev. Similar measurements were made at 30', 60' and 90' for 332 Mev protons.

Five continuous coatings were produced on zirconium coupons using an anodizing technique. These layers appear to be quite adherent and not subject to visible or audible failure caused by flaxion of the basis metal, Their abrasion resistance, though not investigated thoroughly, appears to be moderately good.

The Approximation with Anisotropic Effects for Cylindrical Geometry

The method of spherical harmonic tensors developed Mark for solving the Boltzmann transport equation in isotropic media is herein extended to anisotropic media for cylindrical geometry. A formal solution is given for the case of two concentric cylindrical media, A and B, but no numerical work has yet been done. The following treatment differs from a similar one by the H. K. Ferguson Co. in that the external medium B is assumed to be both a neutron absorber and finite in extent rather than a non-absorber and infinite in extent.

In this volume all the papers presented at the meeting are listed. Copies are given of those papers which are available, and references to published reports are indicated where know for those papers not included in this collections. Attritioning of Temple Mountain Ore

Abstract: The results of both dry and wet attritioning of Temple Mountain ore are presented. In order to obtain effective attritioning on this ore, the amphaltite must be removed before attritioning. With the asphaltite present, dry attritioning causes a build-up of asphaltite on the surface of sand grains, with consequent loss of uranium values. In wet attritioning, the asphaltite is not broken down or attritioned, because of its low specific gravity and resilience.

Autoclave Testing of Mechanically Jacketed Thorium Slugs In Water

Water corrosion tests on mechanically jacketed and pinholed thorium slugs show that these slugs fail in a manner similar to that observed for mechanically jacketed and tested uranium slugs. The proposed mechanism for the water corrosion of these jacketed slugs is analogous to the water corrosion mechanism of jacketed uranium slugs presented in the project lecture. A bare thorium slug appeared to be more resistant to corrosion by water than a mechanically jacketed slug during the first half of the autoclave test. After approximately 90 hours of testing both the bare and the mechanically jacketed thorium slugs were severely corroded by water.

An Automatic Polarograph for the Determination of Uranium in Process Waste Streams

The automatic polarograph is ideally suited for the analysis of waste streams for uranium in the Metal Recovery Process, and with modification, it is applicable to other processes, pilot plants, and even to laboratory set ups. The instrument is simple, dependable, and relatively trouble free in operation. It provides an immediate record of the uranium in the waste and, through better control of the process, lower processing costs.

Average Fission Cross Section U238 for Fission Neutrons

By means of measurements with a double ionization chamber, the average fission cross section of U238 for neutrons from the fission of U235 was determined in terms of v, the average number of neutrons per fission of U235. the number of fission of U238 was measured in one of the ionization chambers while the number of fissions from the fission neutron source of U235 was measured in the other chamber. In the nine runs made to determine the cross section, a variety of different methods was used to determine the number of fissions and the mass of U238.

Backmixing in Pulse Columns II, Experimental Values and Effect of Several Variables

Seven runs were made with the system Penn. Ref. Co. "Supersol" (dispersed) water (continuous) to investigate the effects of pulse frequency, amplitude plate spacing, volume flow ratio, and throughput on backmixing, using the technique of continuous injection of a tracer solution into the packed section. Backmixing was found to be surprisingly insensitive to all the above variables over the range studied with the exception of pulse amplitude and continuous phase flow rate, showing greatest dependence on the later. Backmixing increased with decreasing continuous phase flow rate and increased with pulse amplitude.

A device has been designed which will support small spheres and cylinders in a vacuum system during a plating operation. While supporting the object to be plated, the device automatically shifts the position of the supports so that the coating is evenly distributed. This report describes the mechanism by which this motion is achieved.

Beta In Line Monitor for RCU Stream

Interest has been expressed in continuously monitoring the beta activity of the uranyl nitrate solution pumped to the RCU receiver tank, to facilitate operation at higher flow rates and with younger feeds. A beta scintillation detector has been developed which should make this feasible, and it is proposed that it be tested on stream for this use.
