Failure of Flood Prevention Dam

Photograph of the failure of flood prevention dam No. 13. Looking upstream along outlet structure. Failure occurred when water rose approximately 4 feet above riser, or 6 feet below emergency spillway. Dam completed in January 1957, failure occurred during storm of May 18th.

Rover Bank Flood Damage

Long Branch Creek Watershed Project Site 11

Photograph of Watershed Project Site 11. Mr. George Will, District Supervisor, observing Mr. & Mrs. E. C. Webb signing the first easement on Long Branch Watershed. This easement started the proceedings to clear easements and right-of-ways for constructing Site 11 Detention Dam. Main part of dam is on Perry Cerlile's farm. The three are seated on a culvert bridge showing flood water that covered their bottomland farm 15 times in 1957, located in the Black Bear bottom, 2 miles east of Morrison.

Washita River Channel Cutting

Photograph of channel cutting by the Washita River. East of river bridge. Note corn field being destroyed by Washita River channel cutting. Two days after this picture was taken, approximately 1/2 of Washita River bridge on Highway 77 was destroyed. The channel cut 50 additional feet at this location where telephone pole is standing in this picture. Approximately 2,000 acres of valuable Washita bottomland were destroyed in April and May 1957 by channel cutting.

Destruction by Washita River Channel Cutting

Washita River Channel Damage

Photograph of the Washita River channel picture taken from Highway 77 bridge approx. 2 miles NW of Pauls Valley. It is estimated that the Washita River channel was cut 200 feet wider during the storm of April & May 1957. It was estimated that 2000 acres of valuable bottomland were destroyed by channel cutting in Garvin & Murray SCD's on 112 river miles.

Washita River Channel Cutting

Photograph of the Washita River channel cutting at U. S. Highway 77 bridge 3 miles northwest of Pauls Valley. It was estimated that the Washita channel widened 100 feet in 112 river miles from Lindsay, Okla. To Arbuckle Mts. Approximately 2000 acres of valuable Washita bottom lands were destroyed in April & May of 1957 by channel cutting. Note the gas line being uncovered by channel cutting. Irrigation pump and motor were moved from stand pipe in background. 200 acres are irrigated on the Longmire Farm from this location.

Clean Tilled Land vs Crop Residue Management

Photograph of this is a contrast picture. The St. Paul silt loam has been planted to wheat on clean tilled land. Many of Northwest Oklahoma's seasons are too droughty and windy. A wind storm will damage this land and cause the farmer to loose his stand of wheat.

Proper Land Use

Photograph of productive soil maintained and improved on a 2% slope by use of conservation practices. Land is terraced and contour farmed and crops are rotated. Soil improving crops are used regularly. The crop of oats, now on the land show lodging because of excessive rainfall as did practically 100% of all small grain in the district in 1957. Oats were 5 feet high and promised a good yield when the rains started. Soil Unit 6CP.
