Notes from the 1978-88 Linguistic Field Methods course at University of California, Berkeley on KokBorok with the consultant Prashanta Tripura. These are typed drafts of a KokBorok dictionary with notes and questions from the authors to each other. The drafts are organized by initial and rhyme. A report from a Lahu man receiving paramedical training in Mae Taeng, about 40km south of Huey Tat. Every weekend he would return to the village and give a talk in church on Sunday morning, telling about what he had learned during the week. He encourages the Lahu to go to doctors sooner rather than waiting until the ailment has gotten much worse. He explains that women can give birth in the hospitals if they are not well during the pregnancy. He says medical treatment is free, and that the doctor training him welcomes the Lahus to be treated there in Mae Taeng.

A brief account of beliefs in spirits. If a spirit 'bites' someone, they will consult the spirit doctor who advises them and recites incantations. They pay homage to the ones that cannot bite. Both kinds of spirits are seen as inferior to humans

An origin story about the Tree of Eternal Life and the Precious Eternal Lake. When branches fell from the Tree of Eternal Life, they developed into water creatures, snakes, land animals, humans, and so on.

A recording of the village headman, Cabi, and villagers preparing to record skits and descriptions of village life. They are suggesting what to record--slaughtering animals, building houses, visiting Chiang Mai, taking the bus, bargaining at the market. The headman instructs everyone to be silent in the background, but the villagers are laughing a lot.

A recording of Lahu women fishing in Huey Tat. They bring tools like hoes, mattocks, and plastic sheets to dam the stream. They stack stones and fill in the cracks with mud. They filled their baskets with fish 5-6 kilos of fish, including a soft shell turtle.

A sermon about a man with seven sons who did not get along. He tells his sons that they will be stronger if they work together. The pastor says this lesson extends to the Lahu people as a whole.

A skit performed by Lahu villagers before, during, and after a wedding between Java, a Lahu man and Naphui, a woman from the north country. They discuss killing a pig for the feast and divide the meat between the guests. Later, the couple goes to the pastor because they cannot stay married. The pastor tries to convince them to stay together, but instead the man pays 150 baht, and they are divorced.
