Southwest Conference Highlights

Presented by the Humble Oil & Refining Company, this production reviews college football highlights from the Southwest Conference during the 1956 season. Narrator Kern Tips recaps regular season conference games between the Baylor University Bears, Texas Tech University Red Raiders, University of Arkansas Razorbacks, Southern Methodist University Mustangs, Rice University Owls, University of Texas at Austin Longhorns, Texas A&M University Aggies, and Texas Christian University. It also takes a break from game highlights to feature several members of the 1956 All-Southwest honor team. At the conclusion, the film follows Southwest Conference champion TCU to the Cotton Bowl Classic game against Syracuse University.

This home movie documents the Roy E. Hill family vacationing in Galveston and at Lake Texoma in the summer of 1956. The road trip begins with title cards that read "R.E. Hill Presents," "1956," "Filmed and Edited by Roy E. Hill," and "Helen, Art, and Bonita." This first segment begins with footage shot from their moving car as they pass through Houston and Texas City on their way to Galveston. Footage includes the Texas Heroes Monument, exteriors of homes, boats on the water, businesses including the Omar Khayyam Club (04:28), and docked tourists boats the "Yacht Garmencita" and "Miss Texas" (04:29). The family visits Fort Crockett (04:44), plays on the beach and in the ocean, observes boats on the water, and swims at the hotel pool. This segment concludes with the title card "The End" (11:17). In the next segment, there is a shot of the Dave Hicks Company, Inc., a woman picking up a child at the Young Texan School (12:06), a small airplane being worked on in a driveway (12:06-12:58), children riding bicycles (12:58-13:30) and family visiting the zoo (13:30-15:16).
