Early S. James Episcopal Church, Purcell

Bishop Brooke of the missionary district held services in the Christian Church January 30, 1893. In 1894 Rev. D. G. Gunn conducted an Episcopal serve while Bishop Brooke rallied the town for pledges to purchase church property. Between 1894 - 1902 the services were held in an old 15' x 30' dwelling. The first church is a single story wood frame structure, front and side doors, cross at apex of front roof.

The original church building was used until 1962 before the current church building was given to Perry Historical Society and moved to CCC Lake.

Reverend Shirley Guilroy Sanchez

Reverend Shirley G. Sanchez was born in the West Indies and raised Episcopalian. He left for the United States at the age of 19 and was enrolled at St. Paul's Normal and Industrial School, Virginia. Six years later he attended Bishop Payne's Divinity School and after ordination served in Alabama and Arkansas. He was recommended to the Rt. Reverend Thomas Casady, Bishop of the Missionary District of Oklahoma as a vicar for St. Thomas, Tulsa. Due to a vacancy at Muskogee's Black church of St. Philip's, he served two of the Episcopal Black churches in eastern Oklahoma. During 1933, Bishop Casady authorized Reverend Sanchez to hold Episcopal services at Langston University, Langston besides serving in Tulsa and Muskogee. In 1935, Sanchez left Oklahoma and served in the Diocese of Chicago. While in Chicago, he became a naturalized citizen. It was Co-Adjudicator Bishop Powell who called Reverend Sanchez to return to Oklahoma. For seven years he served at The Church of Redeemer finally retiring in 1960 due to vision loss. Reverend Sanchez died in Oklahoma City in 1972 and is buried at Trice Hill Cemetery, Oklahoma City.
