SOME THEORETICAL ESTIMATES OF THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE RARE EARTH METALS (open access)

SOME THEORETICAL ESTIMATES OF THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE RARE EARTH METALS

Recent determinations of the non-relativistic Hartree atomic wave functions have permitted an estimate of the electronic configuration of the free lanthanide atoms that is more stable and have permitted theoretical estimates of physical quintities such as the spin-orbital splitting parameter, Slater F/sup 2/ integral, diamagnetic susceptibility, atomic scattering factor and L emission spectra. The equilibrium Wigner-Seitz radius p and the compressibilities X were recalculated by the Frohlich-Raimes method. This method was extended to obtain the deviations from Vegard's law, for a number of cerium based alloys. (auth)

SPECIFIC HEAT DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAM FOR THE IBM 704 DIGITAL COMPUTER (open access)

SPECIFIC HEAT DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAM FOR THE IBM 704 DIGITAL COMPUTER

A computer program was developed to calculate the specific heat of a substance in the temperature range from 0.3 to 4.2 deg K, given temperature calibration data for a carbon resistance thermometer, experimental temperature drift, and heating period data. The speciftc heats calculated from these data are then fitted by a curve by the methods of least squares and the specific heats are corrected for the effect of the curvature of the data. The method, operation, program details, and program stops are discussed. A program listing is included. (M.C.G.)

SPECTRAL SHIFT CONTROL REACTOR BASIC PHYSICS PROGRAM-THEORETICAL ANALYSIS. PART II. BPG COMPUTER PROGRAM REPORT (open access)

SPECTRAL SHIFT CONTROL REACTOR BASIC PHYSICS PROGRAM-THEORETICAL ANALYSIS. PART II. BPG COMPUTER PROGRAM REPORT

The BPG code was written to compute the criticality of reactors using all kinds or moderators, specifically including mixtures of H/sub 2/O and D/sub 2/ O. Since slowing down with hydrogen moderator is susceptible to exact calculation, and since the Fermi age equation accurately treats heavy moderators such as carbon, the important innovations in this code deal with the transition from light to heavy scatter, and particularly with the treatment of moderation by deuterium. Included in the description of the code are derivation of the equations, physical data for the calculations, input and output format, and general operating conditions for use with the Burroughs 205 computer. The Study of Menstrual and Other Blood Loss, and Consequent Iron Deficiency by Fe$sup 59$ Whole Body Counting (open access)

The Study of Menstrual and Other Blood Loss, and Consequent Iron Deficiency by Fe$sup 59$ Whole Body Counting

An established method for determining radioiron absorption by whole body counting was used to study six parous women with hypochromic anemia and menorrhagia, and a seventh nulliparous woman with normal blood values and normal menses. In addition to demonstrating iron deficiency by increased radioiron absorption, the method was found useful in estimating the quantity of blood lost with each menstrual period. As much as 550 ml of menstrual loss was noted in two of the patients studied. Estimates in the patient with normal menses were 59 and 33 ml. Two additional patients demonstrated patierns of blood loss found in continuous gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, and in severe epistaxis, as further applications of the technique. Where available, the method is to be recommended for routine investigation of hypochromic anemia when episodic or continuous blood loss such as that of menorrhagia is suspected. (auth)

A Study of the Kinetic and Mechanical Properties of a Stabilized Beta Phase Plutonium Alloy (open access)

A Study of the Kinetic and Mechanical Properties of a Stabilized Beta Phase Plutonium Alloy

The elements Sn, Mg, Ti, Zr, Hf, Si, Cd, and U were alloyed with plutonium to determine their effect on stabilization of the beta phase. Zirconium was found to be the ' most effective. Kinetic studies were conducted on Pu-Zr alloys having 0.24, 0.65, and 1.7 at.% Zr contents. The beta to alpha transformation in the Pu-Zr alloys was somewhat similar to that in unalloyed plutonium. The main difference being that time, temperature, transformation curves of the alloys were shifted to the right as the zirconium concentration increased. It was determined that the amount of beta phase retained at room temperature increased as the zirconium concentration increased. The minimum amount of Zr needed to stabilize the beta phase of plutonium at room temperature was determined to be 2.0 at.%. A 2.4 at.% Zr addition stabilized the beta phase of plutonium at atmospheric pressure from room temperature to 265 deg C. During mechanical property testing it was determined that the stabilized beta Pu-2.4 at.% Zr alloy was brittle from room temperature to 230 deg C. Both tensile and compression strengths of the beta stabilized alloy were greater than the unalloyed beta phase of plutonium. A brittle-ductile transition was noted between 130 …

THE THEORY AND MEASUREMENT OF CRITICALITY (open access)

THE THEORY AND MEASUREMENT OF CRITICALITY

ABS>The measurable properties of a critical assembly (e.g.. fission, capture, and leakage rates; neutron-per-fission ratios; bare/Cd-covered reaction rate of-atios; danger eoefficients; etc.), whose judicious use completely defines tbcneutron economy in the assembly, are discussed. Require ments regarding the internal consisteney of these of:deasured quantities are reviewed. lt is concluded that theoretical analysis of the assembly must both reproduce the gross experimental results and reflect the internal consistency of the data. Only thermal systems fueled with U/sup 235/ and U/sup 238/ are considered. (T.F.H.)

Theory of Point Defect Annealing in Metals (open access)

Theory of Point Defect Annealing in Metals

The kinetics of the annealing of point defects, either by migration to sinks or by recombination, is complicated by the occurrence of a variety of simultaneous reactions. An extensive theoretical study of anneallng processes is in progress based on the isolation and combination of simple kinetic steps. When analytic solutions could not be found, computer solutions were used to obtain useful approximations and to determine their regions of validity. Two migration reaction schemes were studied: the simultaneous annealing of single and di- vacancies and the annealing of single vacancies with impurity trapping. Three recombination reactions were investigated: vacancy-interstitial annihilation with interstitial migration to sinks, di-interstitial formation, and interstitial trapping at impurities. (auth)

THERMAL STRESSES IN HOLLOW CYLINDERS OF BERYLLIUM OXIDE (open access)

THERMAL STRESSES IN HOLLOW CYLINDERS OF BERYLLIUM OXIDE

The problems of experimentally studying the effects of thermal stresses in beryllium oxide are considered in detail. Several ways of producing thermal stresses in hollow cylinders are described and the theoretical stress equations are given for these conditions. Theoretical treatment and practical considerations indicate that an experimental technique involving a static DELTA T and external heating of a hollow cylinder should be the most acceptable experimental approach. Time Dependence of Space Charge Beam Losses in the Cosmotron (open access)

Time Dependence of Space Charge Beam Losses in the Cosmotron

An investigation was made of Cosmotron intensity versus time through the entire time interval from the beginning of injection to the completion of r-f capture. The induction electrode signal was used for the instartaneous measurement of beam intensity. Oscilloscope displays of the signal were photographed and traced. Base lines were filled in on the tracings and the area of the pulses measured with a polar pianimeter. It was found that the relation losses of beam intensity increase with injection intensity (total injected charge), and that most of the losses take place in the time interval between the end of injection and the completion of the first synchrotron oscillation.
