Production test IP-255-A-9-FP E-N demonstration test (open access)

Production test IP-255-A-9-FP E-N demonstration test

The objectives of the test described in this report are to evaluate the integrity of I & E MINT fuel elements canned by the ``C`` process to determine the conversion ratio of I & E geometry E-N ``striped loadings,`` and to provide a demonstration loading for a full reactor loading incorporating a ``striped`` center loading and a fringe ``blanket`` loading. This test will involve two portions a 26 tube block loading of I & E enriched uranium and MINT fuel elements arranged in a striped array, and a 10 tube fringe blanket loading of MINT fuel elements supported by the required enriched uranium fuel columns, and accompanied by controls. Either portion may be charged independently.

Production test IP-226-A: Irradiation of enriched seven-rod cluster elements with twenty and thrity mil Zircaloy-2 jackets

Seven enriched seven-rod cluster elements, three with thirty mil Zircaloy-2 jackets and four with twenty mil Zircaloy-2 jackets, will be irradiated at high temperature to an exposure of 4500 MWD/T. Coolant temperatures in the internal and external flow channels will be measured during irradiation.

Studies on Sub-Fabric Burns: The Relationship of Surface Appearance and Depth of Damage a Method of Study, Preliminary Results, and Observations of Wound Healing

Relationships between surface appearance and actual depth of damage of sub-fabric burns have been established for only a few burns. Since surface appearance has been the most widely used criterion for evaluating the ability of fabrics to protect against radiant energy, it is of some importance to know whether or not bare skin and sub-fabric burns of similar appearance are of comparable severity. In this experiment it was found that both types of burn when produced by one second exposures and when graded 3/sup +/ moderate because of their surface appearance are, indeed, equally severe. Observations on healing of the two types of burn suggest no differences in the manner or rate of tissue restoration. (auth)

The Transcalifornium Elements (open access)

The Transcalifornium Elements

During the past sixty years, four elements beyond californium on the atomic number scale have been synthesized by the transmutation of lighter elements. The first preparation of einsteinium and fermium occurred in a thermonuclear explosion. Mendelevium and element 102, however, were prepared by a more conventional method, that of charged particle bombardment of elements of high atomic number.

NPR design basis (open access)

NPR design basis

The design basis is composed of requirements and conditions for the design of the reactor plant (composed of the reactor and heat dissipation system). Its intent is to insure that the final product meets the economic, safety, and technical objectives of the project. The design basis is dependent on the ground rules, objectives, technical criteria, and practical design considerations. This document is being issued with the understanding that these items are not yet firmly established in all respects, and therefore, the numbers put down here are subject to change. Consideration of the spectrum of probable changes that might be made leads to the conclusion that the numbers here are close to the final ones and are satisfactory as a basis for the initial stages of design. Some numbers are omitted because of insufficient data at this time.

Fast Electronics in High-Energy Physics (open access)

Fast Electronics in High-Energy Physics

A brief review of fast electronics is given, leading up to the present state of the art. Cherenkov counters in high-energy physics are discussed, including an example of a velocity-selecting Cherenkov counter. An electronic device to aid in aligning external beams from high-energy accelerators is described. A scintillation-counter matrix to identify bubble chamber tracks is discussed. Some remarks on the future development of electronics in high-energy physics experiments are included.

Proposed gamma polarization experiment on an underground shot (open access)

Proposed gamma polarization experiment on an underground shot

This memorandum represents a preliminary look at using a nuclear device as a source of polarized rays to perform a polarization experiment on the photoelectric effect. No intensities have been computed but just a look at the effect to be expected. It is anticipated that this would be a more difficult experiment to perform than the earlier proposed neutron polarization experiment. The theory of the experiment and the proposed experiment are described.

Proposed Purex Phase II expansion program

This letter dated March 8, 1957 summarizes the results of preliminary studies on the stepwise expansion of Purex facilities to the ultimate rate of 4.0 capacity factor, using a two-cycle flow-sheet. Briefly, it was suggested that Purex be expanded to the intermediate capacity of 3.5 capacity factor using available FY-1958 funds insofar as possible; decision to expand Purex to 4.0 capacity factor, could have been deferred for subsequent budgetary consideration.

Sites of Azaserine Inhibition During Photosynthesis byScenedesmus (open access)

Sites of Azaserine Inhibition During Photosynthesis byScenedesmus

The success attending the use of azaserine as a specific inhibitor of one atage in the metabolic pathway leading to the synthesis of inosinic acid in pigeon liver prompted us to use this antibiotic in a similar attack on purine synthesis in Scenedesmus. However, investigation of the products produced during photosynthesis by suspensions of these algae in the presence of azaserine showed that a more widespread interference with metabolism had occurred. The purpose of this communication is to describe the nature of these effects and to attempt to assess their importance in a general picture of the metabolic effects of azaserine.

Final report -- PT-105-514-A, Installation of thermocouples in process channels (open access)

Final report -- PT-105-514-A, Installation of thermocouples in process channels

This document discusses a production test which was written when the piles were operating under a graphite temperature limit of 410 C. Operation was controlled by as-read temperatures of the originally installed G thermocouples, by thermocouples installed on vertical safety rod thimbles, and by thermocouples in graphite cylinders installed in the C test holes. Since the thimble thermocouples were to be removed under the Ball 3X program, it was planned to install thermocouples in some of the process tube channels to help monitor the graphite temperatures. In order to ensure maximum production levels based on graphite temperatures, the proper temperature relationships between the channel thermocouples and the G and/or C test hole thermocouples were needed. The expected maximum allowable channel thermocouple temperature reading would be higher than the burnout temperature limit of the graphite in the-pile.
