Supersonic Two-Dimensional Jet-Interaction Studies (open access)

Supersonic Two-Dimensional Jet-Interaction Studies

Abstract: The report describes the results of an experimental study involving the injection of a gaseous secondary jet into an unbounded supersonic flow field which was uniform outside of a turbulent boundary layer. The investigation was principally concerned with the formulation of the shock wave shapes and streamline patterns to be associated with typical turbulent, two-dimensional jet-interaction flows. In support of this objective, results are presented for a Mach 5 test conducted using a flat-plate model containing a sonic secondary jet directed normal to the main-stream. The jet-interaction flow field was primarily investigated for jet strengths (ratio of jet gas stagnation pressure to free-stream static pressure) of 180 and 550. Intermediate strengths were also studied but in lesser detail. Local flow properties were measured throughout the flow field and surface pressure distributions were recorded fore and aft of the secondary jet. From these data and complementary shadowgraph studies, the streamline pattern and attendant shock structure were formulated.

Reactions of the Hydrated Electron (open access)

Reactions of the Hydrated Electron

Abstract. The rate constants for the reaction of the hydrated electron eaq with a number of solutes and with radicals formed in water radiolysis are reported. Hydrated electrons were formed in the electron pulse irradiated solutions at concentrations in the range from 1 to 10 pM. Their reaction was followed by the decay of the optical absorption of eaq at 5780 A. Generally a 04 psec pulse of 15 MeV electrons was used. In the absence of eaq scavengers, second-order kinetics prevailed owing to the dominance of the reactions, eaq+eaq, eaq+H, and eaq+H202 when OH radical scavengers were present in alkaline solution. An analysis of the decay curves leads to values for keaq+eaq and keaq+H of 0.9~ 1010 and 3 x 1010 M-1 sec-1, respectively. With scavenger present in excess over [eaq], pseudo first-order kinetics were found and rate constants for a number of inorganic and organic compounds are reported. The agreement of these and other rate constants with diffusion-controlled reaction theory is discussed.

Internal Conversion Coefficients of the 2+-0+, E2 Transitions in Even-Even Sm152[over]90 and Gd152[over]88 (open access)

Internal Conversion Coefficients of the 2+-0+, E2 Transitions in Even-Even Sm152[over]90 and Gd152[over]88

From abstract: "To investigate the deviation of the internal conversion coefficients of E2 transitions from theoretical computations and their dependence on nuclear deformation, the total internal conversion coefficient of the 121.8-kev 2+-0+ transition in ellipsoidal Sm152[over]90 was measured to be 1.135 ± 0.010 with a high accuracy coincidence-sum method. The K-shell to total internal conversion ratio was determined to be 0.588 ± 0.003 with a [beta] spectrometer...The experiment revealed no deviation from theory nor indications of strong dependence on nuclear deformation; it therefore did not confirm recent beliefs in this regard. The details of the coincidence-sum method were described. The K electron to total electron capture ratio, from Eu152 to the 1.53 Mev state in Sm152 was also measured to be 0.79±0.02."

Injection Trajectories and Beam Matching for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator (open access)

Injection Trajectories and Beam Matching for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator

"ABS>Injection trajectories were calculated for different injection conditions for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator, considering also the effect of magnetic fringing fields. The general problem of matching the emittance of the linac to the acceptance of the synchrotron in the transversal phase space is considered, and it is shown that this can be done by a set of two quadrupole lenses. In order to eliminate rudial betatron oscillations due to energy deviations of the injected particles, a pulsed electric quadrupole lens in the synchrotron in combination with two deflectors between linac and synchrotron can be used to place particles of different energies on their specific equilibrium orbits. A layout of the whole injection system following the output of the linac is given."

Development and Properties of Uranium Monocarbide Cermets : Final Report (open access)

Development and Properties of Uranium Monocarbide Cermets : Final Report

Abstract: "Uranium monocarbide-Zircaloy II alloy cermets were developed and tested for chemical and physical properties. It was determined that pure uranium monocarbide can be prepared by vacuum are melting techniques. Following melting, the combination, hot pressing, and corrosion behavior of dense monocarbide has been studied. The preparation of uranium monocarbide-Zircaloy II cermet bodies was investigated by means of hot pressing, cold pressing and sintering, warm pressing, extrusion, and hot rolling. The corrosion resistance of the cermets was related to such variables as composition, preparation technique, and powder size. 01 per cent uranium monocarbide, 70 per cent zircaloy II cermets withstood corrosion tests in 680 F water. Cermets having above 30 weight per cent uranium monocarbide were not corrosion resistant."

Precision Beta-Ray Spectroscopy : Termination Report (open access)

Precision Beta-Ray Spectroscopy : Termination Report

Detailed information on the radiations associated with several even-even isotopes has been obtained. In some instances enough information has been gathered to allow construction of skeleton energy level diagrams for the isotopes. Activities studied were obtained from pile irradiation of pure odd-even natural isotopes and included Dy160, W182, Sm152, Gd152 and Gd154. Details of the work done on and results obtained for these isotopes are reported in section 3. Some analytic and experimental studies were carried out on the application of tilting beta-ray spectrograph sources for improvement of resolution. The uses and limitation of this technique are discussed in section 2.

Separation of Zirconium & Hafnium : Proposal for Construction & Operation of Zirconium Production Plant (open access)

Separation of Zirconium & Hafnium : Proposal for Construction & Operation of Zirconium Production Plant

Abstract: A re-evaluation of the cost of producing essentially hafnium free zirconium as zirconium oxide at a rate of 150,000-200,000 pounds zirconium per year by solvent extraction of the metal thiocyanates in a permanent plant has been made. Using part of the present temporary facilities, the cost, with five year amortization of the plant, will be $3.15 per pound zirconium. A by-product of the mixed oxides of hafnium and zirconium, having at least fifty percent hafnium and perhaps as high as ninety percent hafnium, can be made available with little additional cost.

Abrasive Cutting of Irradiated Uranium (open access)

Abrasive Cutting of Irradiated Uranium

The preparation of radioactive metallurgical specimens for microscopic examination is one of the responsibilities of the Radiometallurgy Sub-Unit. An abrasive cut-off machine development program, based upon a previous experimental model, was undertaken to provide a method for sectioning of irradiated materials without undue personnel exposure or spread of contamination and finally to provide data for the design of an abrasive cutting unit for use in the work cells in the Radiometallurgy Building. A horizontal-feed type set-off machine, powered by a 7 1/2 hp motor with V-belt drive, has been developed for the submerged sectioning of irradiated uranium and is currently being used successfully to obtain samples for metallurgical, chemical and physical investigations without excessive personnel exposure or spread of radioactive contaminates.
