Contour Farming

Photograph of parallel terraces that have just been completed. A 5 inch rain fell during the night. The photo was taken the following day. Tom McLin is pointing out the cross-section area of the terrace and showing debris where the water height appeared. These are the first parallel terraces layed out int he Murray County Soil Conservation District. OK-1465-5.

Contour Farming

Photograph of strip crops alone. Strips of hairy vetch and oats planted on the “B” slope have been entirely successful in controlling erosion. Due to lack of a suitable place to dispose of terrace water, no terraces were used. The strips were planted on 10-12-36.

Water Pouring Out of a Field

Photograph of a river of water pouring out of a section of land. Up and down slope tilled during a 1 1/4 inch of rain. Straight rows may be seen in background. The slope was about 2.5 inch toward the point where the picture was taken. The huge volume of water that broke through the end of the field into the bar ditch along highway caused regular rapids and churning water. Width of water in the main current was at least 2 feet deep. Photo was taken during a rain.

Photograph of an UNIDENTIFED man with horse drawn equipment mowing weeds in a native bluestem meadow to promote of grasses. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Mowing Weeds In Native Bluestem Meadow to promote growth of grasses. Area is protected from fire and grazing and is mowed regularly for weed control. Coop. has good demand for hay because meadow is kept free of weeds, and says "I have a steady demand for clipped hay at 35₵ but demand is light. My mowed meadows produces ¾ T. more per A. than my unmowed fields." San Saba soil 2 1/3% slope."
