Photograph of a new pasture strip for a terrace outlet that is 75 feet wide. Land sodded [?] and Bermuda grass sprigs dropped in [unclear] plowed middles [?] and land then bedded [?] in March, 1948 and [unclear] to cotton in April. Cotton was cultivated 3 times. Yield estimated at 1/3 bale acre [?]. Almost a complete grass cover present by the date of the photo’s taking. [Unclear] stated that this was the best way to establish Bermuda grass and he believes in establishing his outlets before constructing terraces and that a pasture strip is better than a channel for outletting terraces. Photograph of Suitor Fescue. Planting made during the latter part of September, 1947. Fifty pounds of seed were furnished by the Soil Conservation Service and five acres were planted in a # 6-graded soil. About 200 pounds of 3-9-18 fertilizer were used on the five acres. Approximately 200 pounds of seed were harvested in the summer of 1948. It is believed that twice as much seed would have been harvested had it not been for a heavy rain two days before the harvest. Sprig sodded in March 1947 to Bermudagrass & then planted to corn. Corn plowed 3 times & yielded 30 bu. per ac. Land was bedded & sprigs dropped at 3 ft. intervals rebedded, & corn planted on beds. Strips 100’ wide at upper end & 175’ wide at lower end. Approximately 65 acres of terraced land will drain on this strip. Strip will be fenced & used as pasture after terraces are constructed. Eroded soil has been washing into west Barnitz Creek. Plug will stabilize land below in conjunction with other plugs and detentions. This plug will be augmented by 2 divisions to stabilize 2 other gullies and keep the terrace water from entering gullies. Photo shows fill being made.
