Analysis of a thermal ice-prevention system for wing leading-edge landing-light installations

From Introduction: "A typical ice formation on a wing leading-edge-type light installation is shown in figure 1. Although the primary purpose of this analytic investigation was to determine the practicability of providing a landing-light thermal ice-prevention system which could be incorporated with the wing leading-edge thermal ice-prevention system of the B-17 F airplane, the analysis has been developed in a general form for future application to similar deigns. Compressible potential flow with circulation about a circular cylinder (open access)

Compressible potential flow with circulation about a circular cylinder

Report presenting the potential function for flow, with circulation, of a compressible fluid about a circular cylinder, which is obtained in series form including terms of the order of M(exp 4) where M is the Mach number of the free stream. The equations are used to obtain pressure coefficient as a function of Mach number at a point on the surface of the cylinder for different values of circulation.

Compressible potential flow with circulation about a circular cylinder

"The potential function for flow, with circulation, of a compressible fluid about a circular cylinder is obtained in series form including terms of the orders of m(4) where m is the Mach number of the free stream. The resulting equations are used to obtain pressure coefficients as a function of Mach number at a point on the surface of the cylinder for different values of circulation. The coefficients derived are compared with the Glauert-Prandtl and Karman-Tsien approximations which are functions of the pressure coefficients of an incompressible fluid" (p. 129).

Compressive Strength of Corrugated-Sheet-Stiffened Panels for Consolidated XB-36 Airplane (open access)

Compressive Strength of Corrugated-Sheet-Stiffened Panels for Consolidated XB-36 Airplane

"Compression tests were made of 63 panels stiffened with corrugated sheet. The specimens were constructed from artificially aged alclad 24S-T aluminum alloy with minimum guaranteed yield strengths of 57 and 48 kips per square inch for the flat- and corrugated-sheet materials, respectively. Results of the tests are presented in charts which show the average stresses at the maximum load and at buckling of the sheet" (p. 1).

Determination of the Effect of Wing Flexibility on Lateral Maneuverability and a Comparison of Calculated Rolling Effectiveness With Flight Results (open access)

Determination of the Effect of Wing Flexibility on Lateral Maneuverability and a Comparison of Calculated Rolling Effectiveness With Flight Results

Report presenting an analysis which shows that, when account is taken of sideslip and wing flexibility, the calculated rolling maneuverability of an airplane is in good agreement with the results obtained from flight tests. The method used avoids the complications of successive approximations but is nevertheless believed to be more nearly accurate than other methods based on semirigid-wing assumptions. The method is applied to a wing of tubular shell construction and the procedure is illustrated for a modern pursuit airplane.

Determination of the Stresses Produced by the Landing Impact in the Bulkheads of a Seaplane Bottom (open access)

Determination of the Stresses Produced by the Landing Impact in the Bulkheads of a Seaplane Bottom

"The present report deals with the determination of the impact stresses in the bulkhead floors of a seaplane bottom. The dynamic problem is solved on the assumption of a certain elastic system, the floor being assumed as a weightless elastic beam with concentrated masses at the ends (due to the mass of the float) and with a spring which replaces the elastic action of the keel in the center. The distributed load on the floor is that due to the hydrodynamic force acting over a certain portion of the bottom" (p. 1).

Dynamics of the Inlet System of a Four-Stroke Engine (open access)

Dynamics of the Inlet System of a Four-Stroke Engine

"Tests were run on a single-cylinder and a multicylinder four-stroke engine in order to determine the effect of the dynamics of the inlet system upon indicated mean effective pressure. Tests on the single-cylinder engine were made at various speeds, inlet valve timings, and inlet pipe lengths. These tests indicated that the indicated mean effective pressure could be raised considerably at any one speed by the use of a suitably long inlet pipe" (p. 1).

Effect of Tilt of the Propeller Axis on the Longitudinal-Stability Characteristics of Single-Engine Airplanes (open access)

Effect of Tilt of the Propeller Axis on the Longitudinal-Stability Characteristics of Single-Engine Airplanes

Report presents the results of tests of a model of a single-engine airplane with two different tilts of the propeller axis. The results indicate that on a typical design a 5 degree downward tilt of the propeller axis will considerably reduce the destabilization effects of power. A comparison of the experimental results with those computed by use of existing theory is included. A comparison of the experimental results with those computed by use of existing theory is included. It is shown that the results can be predicted with an accuracy acceptable for preliminary design purposes, particularly at the higher powers where the effects are of significant magnitude.

Effects of Heat-Capacity Lag in Gas Dynamics (open access)

Effects of Heat-Capacity Lag in Gas Dynamics

Report presenting an investigation of the existence of energy dissipations in gas dynamics, which must be attributed to a lag in the vibrational heat capacity of the gas, and most specifically the flow about a very small impact tube. A new method of measuring the relaxation time of gases is introduced in which the total-head defects observed with a specially shaped impact tube are compared with theoretical considerations.
