In-reactor corrosion: A paper presented at the 9th annual AEC Corrosion Symposium, Boston, Massachusetts, May 10--12, 1960
Object of this paper is to present preliminary results of experiments in Hanford in-reactor loops to determine if exposure to neutrons will increase corrosion rates of Al alloys, Zy-2, and 304 stainless steel. Results were negligible or no corrosion.

CYANAMIDE: A POSSIBLE KEY COMPOUND IN CHEMICAL EVOLUTION
The prebiotic synthesis of phosphorus-containing compounds--such as nucleotides and polynucleotides--would require both a geologically plausible source of the element and pathways for its incorporation into chemical systems on the primitive Earth. The mineral apatite, which is the only significant source of phosphate on Earth, has long been thought to be problematical in this respect due to its low solubility and reactivity. However, in the last decade or so, at least two pathways have been demonstrated which would circumvent these perceived problems. In addition, recent results would seem to suggest an additional, extraterrestrial source of reactive phosphorus. It appears that the 'phosphorus problem' is no longer the stumbling block which it was once thought to be.

SYNCHROTRON RADIATION AND RING FORMATION IN THE ELECTRON RING ACCELERATOR
We discuss the possibility of using synchrotron radiation to form electron rings having a very high electric field to hold the ions inside the ring. The formulas describing bow the energy and the dimension of the ring change under the effect of synchrotron radiation are derived, and a numerical example is given.

ABSOLUTE ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS. I. ON THE MECHANISM OF THEPHOTOCHEMICAL ABSOLUTE ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS OF HELICENES WITH CIRCULARLYPOLARIZED LIGHT. . WAVELENGTH DEPENDENCE OF THE OPTICAL YIELD OFOCTAHELICENE.
The synthesis of nonracemic yields of hexa-, hepta-, octa-, and nonhelicene with circular light was observed, and the structural and wavelength dependence of the induced optical yields was examined. The results obtained, together with a detailed consideration of the mechanism of helicene synthesis from the parent diarylolefins, indicate that the induced optical activity is due to selective reaction of enantiomeric conformations of the parent cis diarylolefins by circular light.

SPECTROSCOPIC INVESTIGATION OF THE INHIBITORY EFFECT OF FATTYACIDS ON PHOTOSYNTHETIC SYSTEMS
Fatty acids have a reversible inhibitory effect on respiration and on photosynthetic action. They investigated the influence of octanoic acid on the photosynthetic bacteria Rhodopseudomonas spheroids R-26. From the spectroscopic data they conclude that a less efficient energy transfer and decoupling of the light harvesting pigment system from the energy converting reaction center is responsible for the inhibitory effect.

ISOLEUCYL-tRNA SYNTHETASE OF E. coli B. A RAPID KINETIC INVESTIGATION OF THE L-ISOLEUCINE ACTIVATING REACTION
We have investigated the preequilibrium kinetics of the L-isoleucine activation reaction catalyzed by Ile-tRNA synthetase in the presence of a fluorescent reporter group, 2-p-toluidinylnaphthalene-6-sulfonate, using the stopped-flow technique. It is found that of all the reactants involved, L-isoleucine binds slowest to the enzyme, apparently in a two-step process. The kinetics of the reaction are invariant in the presence of co-reactants, whereas the kinetics for ATP are drastically changed in the presence of Mg{sup 2+} ions. The formation of enzyme bound L-isoleucyl {approx} AMP is conveniently followed at dilute concentrations. The value for the rate constant of formation was determined to be 135 sec{sup -1} and of the reverse process to be 670 sec{sup -1} at pH 8.0 25 C. These values are considerably higher than the rate constant 15 sec{sup -1} of the dissociation reaction for L-isoleucine. The value of the kinetically defined equilibrium constant between the ternary Michaelis-Menten complex and the ternary enzyme-product complex indicates that, at equilibrium, the Michaelis-Menten complex is favored. The effect of temperature has been determined, and a tentative interpretation of the thermodynamic parameters is offered. The zero standard enthalpy and positive entropy for binding of L-isoleucine is consistent with hydrophobic interactions, whereas the enzyme-ligand …

Analysis of an analytical technique for distributing air sampling locations around nuclear facilities
A new analytical mechanism for distributing air sampling locations around nuclear facilities, including reactors, fuel fabrication, fuel reprocessing and research centers, has been devised. This method was developed to facilitate the efficient incorporation of past experiences into environmental surveillance programs for now or developing installations. The technique provides an initial distribution of air samplers around a site which correlates well with placements on sites which have been occupied by long established programs with their inherent evolution and refinements. The applicability of this approach has been examined by comparing sampling locations in well-established air monitoring programs scattered worldwide with location distributions recommended by this mechanism. Results of these comparisons will be detailed.
