Optimum Conditions for the "Hot Zone" Volatilization of TCl₄ (open access)

Optimum Conditions for the "Hot Zone" Volatilization of TCl₄

Abstract: "The data reported herein furnish a qualitative comparison of the rapidity of vaporization of TCl4 at various "hot zone" temperatures as well as a measure of the chlorine evolution attributed to its thermal decomposition. The presence of impurities in the TCl4 detracts from the significance of the reported chlorine evolution. The temperature recommended for rapid volatilization is 750 C at which TCl4 underwent thermal decomposition amounting to no more than 0.2% by weight."

Sid Magnet Model Test Results (open access)

Sid Magnet Model Test Results

From introduction: "These data were taken on a 1/16th scale model of the magnet shown on sketch no. FS-2. The object of these measurements was to get information that would determine the final design of the full scale magnet. The one main point to be settled was whether a tapered or a cylindrical pole piece would give the largest value of Hρ for a given power input into the magnet (the cylindrical pole piece is shown in dotted lines in sketch FS-2)."

Corrosivity of Uranyl Fluoride to Certain Metals (open access)

Corrosivity of Uranyl Fluoride to Certain Metals

Abstract: "The results obtained from the tests conducted for the purpose of determining the corrosivity of a 30 percent-solution of uranyl fluoride to various metals indicate that stainless steels (type 302, 304, 321 and 316) have very good resistance; while monel, nickel and aluminum, respectively, exhibit diminishing resistance. Stainless steel, type 316, was the most resistant of the specimen tested."

Geology and Ore Deposits of Yazzie Mesa, Apache County, Arizona with Recommendations for Exploration Drilling (open access)

Geology and Ore Deposits of Yazzie Mesa, Apache County, Arizona with Recommendations for Exploration Drilling

Abstract: Yazzie Mesa was examined in May 1951, by the writer, assisted by R. C. Cutter. The mesa shows one main channel deposit and three minor channels. The main channel appears to be a northern extension of a channel deposit being worked by the Vanadium Corporation of America at their Monument No. 2 mine. Two samples taken on the south outcrop of the main channel assayed 0.16% U308 over 4.5 feet and 0.80% U308 over 1 foot. The area is recommended for 10,000 feet of exploration drilling. It is not intended to recommend this footage as a separate contract unit as this report covers only a small part of an area in which drilling will be recommended in forthcoming reports.

Conference on "Hot" Laboratory Design Held at Brookhaven National Laboratory on September 19, 1947

From introduction: "This conference represents the first attempt by a project-wide group of scientists and engineers to collaborate on the problem associated with the planning and design of "Hot" Laboratories. The idea, as originally conceived by Dr. W. E. Winsche, was to discuss some general and perhaps some specific aspects of "Hot" Laboratory design with a small group of interests individuals from various sites."

Expressions for Conversion Ratio in a Th-U²³⁵ Converter

"This memo shall be an attempt to write down in a consistent manner some expressions for conversion ratio so that a comparison can be made with regard to a uniformly loaded core versus a flattered zone surrounded by an unloaded region. The discussion will be limited to the type of loading that is at present being considered for the reactor - a checkerboard array of MTR fuel elements and feed elements; the unloaded reactor will consist of fuel elements only."

Thorium and Thorium Alloys Preliminary Corrosion Tests

Technical report investigating the corrosion resistance of thorium and thorium alloys containing from 2 to 6% chromium, columbinium (niobium), titanium, zirconium and titanium-zirconium in distilled water at 95ºC. Reaction of Graphic with Sodium (open access)

Reaction of Graphic with Sodium

Most of the publications in the open literature available to us agree that sodium does not readily react with graphite, though potassium, rubidium, and cesium readily enter between the planes of the graphite lattice. In view of the conflicting evidence available, it seems inadvisable without very extensive further study to consider the use of graphite in direct contact with liquid sodium, except under very mild conditions of temperature and irradiation, and then only with very pure sodium and completely graphitized graphite.

Attritioning of Temple Mountain Ore (open access)

Attritioning of Temple Mountain Ore

Abstract: The results of both dry and wet attritioning of Temple Mountain ore are presented. In order to obtain effective attritioning on this ore, the amphaltite must be removed before attritioning. With the asphaltite present, dry attritioning causes a build-up of asphaltite on the surface of sand grains, with consequent loss of uranium values. In wet attritioning, the asphaltite is not broken down or attritioned, because of its low specific gravity and resilience.
