Technical report which includes a description of scaling action in a Higinbotham circuit, of operation of the output circuit, of operation of the regulated high voltage supply. Acceptance and performance specifications are given. also included are cuts showing the bottom and top view of a scaler of this type. The scaling circuit diagram and major parts list is attached. To facilitate testing, the circuit of a satisfactory pulse generator is included together with a cathode - follower.

Abstract: "The possibility of detecting small quantities of uranium with an X-ray spectrometer was investigated. An X-ray spectrograph was modified by substituting a geiger counter for the photographic film. Both primary and secondary methods of excitation were studied. Radiation background of high intensity and variability limits the sensitivity of the present apparatus to 1%. Suggestions are made for increasing the sensitivity of the method."

Abstract: "The half-life of polonium has been measured by a calorimetric method using samples several thousand times larger than have been previously available. The value is found to be 138.3 +/- 0.1% days."

Abstract: "Spectrophotometric evidence for the existence of UCl₅ as a double compound UCl₆ and UCl₄ has been obtained by studying the absorption spectra of these chlorides in CCl₄ and SOCl2 solutions in the visible and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum."

Abstract: "Hexavalent uranium in weakly acid solution produces with a large excess of ascorbic acid a yellow-brown color whose intensity under certain conditions is a linear function of uranium concentration. Chloride, nitrate, perchlorate, along with Fe, Cd, Mn, Na, Ca, Sn, Mg and Th are without effect on the color while phosphate, sulfate, fluoride, citrate, tartrate, oxalate, chromium, and vanadium and moderate amounts of Ni, Zn, Mo and Al interfere. A rapid ether extraction procedure for purification of the uranium has been developed."

Abstract: This technical report consists of series of drawings of the instrument with the following explanation. The modification of the Simpson Methane flow proportional counter consists of a means for inserting and replacing samples into the chamber through an air-lock device which avoids the introduction of even a small quantity of air into the active volume of the chamber. This is accompanied by sweeping out the small volume of the air-lock containing the sample with methane gas before the sample is introduced into the chamber -- this sweeping out requiring only a few seconds. The mechanical construction is somewhat simplified over that employed in the Simpson counter design, although the electrical and counting characteristics are essentially duplicates of those employed in the Simpson version. Voltage plateaus about 400 volts long, flat within 1% per 100 volts are obtained with the counter, with the operating point at about 2500 volts for methane at one atmosphere pressure. A plateau extending over a range of about 40% variation in amplification factor is obtained. Standard samples have been checked to standard deviation of +/-0.3% over a period of one year. The counter is rather gas-tight and is ready for use within about ten minutes …

(2) To determine the nature of the dependence of life upon the initial diameter of the filament. (3) To determine the effect of varying concentrations of water vapor and air upon the life of the filaments. (4) To determine the relative life characteristics of tantalum as compared to tungsten.

The following report summarizes the data taken from a series of measurements on the combustion and ignition properties of hexone. The experiments were taken at the Bureau of Mines Central Experiment Station by their personnel, and the samples were given to them by KAPL and Hanford.

The following report describes the electron spectrum of protactinium derived from 23 minute thorium 233 that was produced by neutron capture in stable thorium.

"A program of creep-rupture tests of several bars of Beryllium has been completed. The tests were made at 1200, 1400, 1550, and 1700 F. in protective atmospheres of tank helium or hydrogen. The results are given in a summary table and by creep and design curves. A description of the test set-up is included."

From introduction: "It has become desirable to develop an alternative method for the determination of lithium to serve as a stand-by method at times when the flame photometer is inoperative, or to supplement the latter in cases where a doubtful analysis requires further investigation. A method based upon the precipitation of lithium with potassium ferriperiodate was investigated because of its expected freedom from interference by aluminum."

Calculations indicative of the power loss for 75 in.radius gap splitters are given.

Technical report outlining the fabrication of twenty-five fuel assemblies and three shim-safety rod fuel sections for use in the Materials Resting Reactor Mock-Up Critical Experiments. Results show that two of the assemblies exceeded tolerance in a few of the key dimensions, but were considered acceptable and as a consequence, production was carried out with no rejects. Abstract: An evaluation is made of radioactivity logging as applied to exploration drilling on the Colorado Plateau. The compilation of data gives a preliminary insight into the possibilities of the technique being applied.

Technical report outlining the investigation of corrosion on MTR type fuel elements for the Shielding Reactor in filtered water. Report includes two basic types of protection: element pretreatment by either anodizing or alodizing, and solution control using nitric acid to maintain a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 or the addition of 60 ppm sodium chromate as an inhibitor.
