The problem of this study is an investigation of the development of social adjustment in thirty-three first-grade pupils in Gainesville, Texas, during 1949-1950. The purpose of the study is to determine each child's total readiness status at the beginning of the investigation, surround each with socializing experiences appropriate to his need, and then determine whether measurable benefits appear to result from his participation in the specific activities designed for social development.

The problem in this study is twofold. First, there will be an attempt to determine the values that organizations in the secondary school have for the development of its students. Second, a survey will be made of the four-year accredited high schools in District Five of Texas to determine how and to what extent they are realizing their responsibilities in this respect.

The problem of this investigation was to survey the noon-meal vegetable consumption of 248 elementary-school children in the J. M. Lindsay School, Gainesville, Texas, for a period of ten days, and to compile lists of the vegetables which the children indicated that they liked or disliked.

The purpose set forth for this study was that of making a critical investigation of the program of Camp Sweeney, a summer camp for diabetic children located in Cooke County, Texas, near Gainesville, in order to determine whether this camp is providing an effective and beneficial program for such children.

The purpose of this study is three-fold: 1. To make a study of modern philosophy and modern psychology of education. 2. To show by comparison how well the Gainesville elementary schools comply in a modern philosophy and a modern psychology of education. 3. To make recommendations for changes that could be made for the improvement of the Gainesville elementary school system.

The problem of this thesis is three-fold: (1) to determine what social workers, officers of the law, and leaders in the field of education believe about juvenile delinquency; (2) to study the backgrounds, personalities, and criminal records of one hundred girls committed to the Texas State Training School at Gainesville, Texas, to determine the major factors in their delinquency; and (3) to make recommendations that may be helpful in meeting the problems of youth.

"The organized woman's club movement spread into the State of Texas. Beginning as associations for self-culture and intellectual development, the clubs were soon laying the foundation for better conditions of living in their communities. The purpose of this study is an attempt to define the needs in the primary grades in Gainesville, to find the most successful criteria used for grouping children upon their entrance into the first grade, and to find the best plan for primary grades in Gainesville schools.

"This study shows three things: (1) a precedent for the expenditure of public funds to teach electricity in our public high schools has already been established by the school system in the larger school systems of Texas, (2) the rural families living on electrified farms in the North Texas area want instruction of this type given to the boys and girls in their communities, and (3) both the rural people and the professional people of the North Texas area believe that instruction dealing with the use of electricity and electrical equipment had spread until by 1935 more than twenty-one million homes, about eighty percent of the total in America at that time, were electrified, only eleven American farms out of every 100 had central-station electricity. This study compared the effects of competitive basketball experiences, no basketball experiences, and choral experiences of girls in the Gainesville State Training School upon selected personality factors, behavior, and social status.

It is the purpose of this study to determine the identifiable causes of delinquency among children of elementary age in Gainesville and to make proposals for more effective youth services. To do this an analysis will be made of the possible sources and causes of delinquency, a modern educational approach, and the relation between the two.

A survey of language in a certain area is designed primarily to present a living language as it is actually spoken; thus, a morphological study of language is designed to determine the most widely-used syntactical and grammatical forms and to record these forms in a statistical manner. These findings are to be interpreted in the light of similar studies, not with the purpose of establishing the cultural level of the language in the area surveyed, but to present all the possible variations, and, in some cases, to draw a comparison as a matter of record between the forms found to be commonly used in every-day speech and the standard usage as given by leading linguistic authorities.

This conference report contains discussions and papers from a symposium hosted at Texas Christian University, in Fort Worth, Texas, examining the ecological health of the Upper Trinity River, and the impacts of various human activity, such as agriculture, urbanization, and waste management. The papers cover the effect of water quality on urban rivers, long-term water quality trends in the Trinity River, solutions that may improve water quality in the river, as well as biological, agricultural and waste-water issues.

The purpose of this study was to make an analysis of the program of health, physical education, and recreation for girls in the Gainesville High School, Gainesville, Texas. The aim was to develop a program that will function in the lives of the pupils. In order to provide a basis for the improvement of the existing program, an effort was made to evaluate the program for the purpose of improving the health of the pupils and the quality of the services rendered by the school in the areas of health, physical education, and recreation. Finally, the program was evaluated in the light of certain criteria that were set up as guiding principles.

The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of determining the effects of masculinity on achievement. The California Psychological Inventory Fe Scale is used to measure masculinity. Results from this scale are compared with results on five measures of adjustment; Wechsler I.Q. scores, the Gainesville State School point system, and three scales constructed for this study to measure aspects of adjustment. The findings of this study fail to support the proposition that masculinity affects adjustment. The instrument used in this study to measure masculinity may be culturally biased. Further research is needed in this area using a number of measures of masculinity to determine masculinity's effects on adjustment.

Two years before impoundment, the trophic status of Lake Ray Roberts was predicted by applying the total phosphorus input into the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) eutrophication model. Predicted mean summer epilimnetic (MSE) chlorophyll a of Elm Fork arm, Isle duBois arm and Main Body were in the eutrophic category of the OECD model. Observed MSE chlorophyll a two years after impoundment of Elm Fork arm, Isle duBois and Main Body had not reached their predicted means and were at the mesotrophic-eutrophic boundary of the OECD model. Six years after impoundment, observed MSE chlorophyll a for Main Body, was closer to its predicted mean and in the eutrophic category of the OECD model. Six years after impoundment, Elm Fork arm was the most productive area of Lake Ray Roberts. Observed means of chlorophyll a, total phosphates, suspended solids and turbidity were often highest in the Elm Fork arm. Wastewater effluent from Gainesville and Valley View, TX, had an impact on productivity in Elm Fork arm.

"The Great Hanging" is a documentary film that tells the story of the largest extra-legal mass hanging in U.S. History. This story is told through stage play recital of "October Mourning" written by historian and professor Dr. Pat Ledbetter. Using the stage play as a vehicle, the film showcases cinematic re-enactments based in the events in Gainesville, Texas during October 1862. These events show how a small community became overwhelmed by the fog of war and delved into madness as the Civil War crept closer and closer to their doorstep.

The problem of this study was to determine the extent to which the results of the use of the "Evaluative Criteria" set up by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools agree with the evaluative criteria drawn from standard objectives in an activity program of the Era High School.

Muenster, Texas, in Cooke County, began in 1889 through efforts of German-American colonizing entrepreneurs who attracted settlers from other German-American colonies in the United States. The community, founded on the premise of maintaining cultural purity, survived and prospered for a century by its reliance on crops, cattle, and oil. In its political conservatism and economic ties to the land, Muenster resembled its neighboring Anglo-American communities. Its Germanic heritage, however, became pronounced in the community's refusal to accommodate to the prohibitionism of North Texas regarding alcoholic beverages and in the parishioners' fidelity to the Roman Catholic faith. These characteristics are verified in unpublished manuscripts, governmental documents, local records, and interviews with Muenster residents.

This study was made to determine the efficiency of the Business Education Department of the Gainesville High School, in so far as the effect upon the future of the students is concerned. An attempt was made to determine the effectiveness of training given the business students of this school in meeting the demands of the business world in which many of them are now employed and to discover which, if any, of the courses need to be enriched and emphasized.

The purpose of this study is to make an evaluation of Gainesville Junior High School to determine the extent to which it meets criteria for this type of school. The different phases of the school evaluated were: plant and equipment, library, course of study, techniques of teaching, and extra-curricular activities.
