Cover Crop

Photograph of a closeup of drill operated by Linden for Dale McClain to seed rye for winter cover in cottonland. The shields for tractor wheels were made from barrels and are hinged for rearward movement when striking the ground to prevent damage. The shields on the drill over the row pull the cotton limbs in to protect them from the disks. Drill wheels have been removed. The drill is carried on a three-point hookup.

Photograph of a man in tall grass. This picture shows native grass after timber was sprayed in the Spring of 1967. Grass has made a quick recovery and good growth. Grazing was deffered during the growing season to enable native grasses to make growth and produce seed. OK-2904-12.

Recreation

Photograph of Carland Smith, owner of several abandoned coal pits, reserves this ara fro his family and very close friends. He has two docks, electricity and running water. He plans to build a cabin in thi area. This pit is fertized according to recommendations. He has been successful inobtaining a good "bloom" in this pit.

Strip Mining, Reclamation

Photograph of a 40 acre field of bermuda grass on an area which was previously coal strip pits. The area was used by the city of Okmulgee for a saniatry landfill. This area was used for disposal between 1955 and 1960. OK-2903-12.

Water Conservation; Water Erosion; Flooding and Prevention

Photograph of Carland Smith who has constructed this dam across the natural drainage from this pit area. The primary purpose of the dam was an access road across the top and to provide shallow water immediately in front of the dam to launch fishing boats. OK-2003-7 [?].
