Photograph of the combining of vetch and Abruzzi rye for seed on the former idle land. Last year Bermal Hickman had 150 acres of vetch that grazed 130 head of cattle from November 20 to March 20. He said that the crop could have carried twice as many cattle. He estimates his yield of vetch seed, from 40 acres combined, at 60,000 pounds. He practices crop rotation, deffered grazing on 600 acres, trashy tillings and all fields that should be are terraced. He farms 780 acres under a 5 year cash lease with E. P. Kilgore, Brownwood, the owner. On the tractor are, left and right, Malcolm McKeehan, Boss (Bill) McKeehan and their father, an employee of Hickman's. TX-43, 108.

Next year, Maples plans to use a 4-row strip with 2 rows of crotolaria on the outside of two rows of peas. Crop residue is from last year's strips of sorghum. Peanuts on the field last year yielded 24 bushels per acre. The 74 acre field is all planted on the contour and stripped for wind erosion. 30 acres are protected with 2 rows of peas plus a row of sorghum on each side; 5 acres with 4 row strips of peas; 19 acres with 4 row strips of sorghum; 20 acres with 4 row strips of of crotolaria. Peas and crotolaria were fertilized with 100 pounds super phospate per acre. TX-41-302.

The four rows of sorghum planted alternately with 8 rows of peanuts were severely grazed and a slight amount of wind erosion is evident although it is not serious. Wind erosion control strips on peanut fields should not be grazed and tall growing vegetation should be left to afford the fullest possible protection to the sandy soils. TX-40-893-B.

Green Tonnage: Unfertilized: 3,079# rye, 103# vetch, Fertilized: 3,511# rye, 8,494# vetch. Total: Unfertilized, 1.59 tons per acre, Fertilized, 6.01 tons per acre. (The increase was 432# rye, 8,391# vetch). At 14 cents per lb. for vetch seed and 4 ½ cents per lb. for rye seed, the unfertilized crop amounted to $18.87 per acre. On fertilized land the per acre return was $96.88. The fertilizer made an increase in profit of $76.46 per acre.”
