Mr. Matli practices flexible tillage to keep the seedbed free from excessive grass and weeds. This is Soil Unit 70, subject to severe wind erosion without cover. Earl Judge says cover is a must on this soil. The soil management program on this farm includes legumes of vetch or sweet clover. Note the effects of wind erosion on the field to the right. Photograph of Upland alfalfa for soil management, William Widnay farm. Alfalfa is an excellent legume for soil building and cover. Mr. Widney uses alfalfa on upland (III - ?) in his conservation crop rotation. This alfalfa was seeded in the fall of 1952. For a nurse crop, ½ bushel of wheat per acre was cross-drilled in the wide spaced rows (every other row drilled). Wheat made 20 bushels per acre. Utilization of alfalfa has been a spring hay crop, seed crop in the summer and fall pastures. He has another planting of alfalfa and plans to plow this one up in the fall. His plans are for the alfalfa to be in a 3-year rotation. He has been a soil district cooperator since 1948. OK-279-12.

Mixture was seeded at rate of about 12 lbs. per acre. This 10 acres was seeded for permanent pasture on clean cotton land. Yield is estimated to be 30 to 35 lbs. combined material per acre. Mr. Briscoe retired 135 acres last year on this farm, 65 acres on another farm that he owns. Next year he plans to plant 20 additional acres of bluestem on a field now in rye and vetch. Driving the tractor is Curtis Hydson, cooperator, 1 mile east of Geary, while his brother, Dillard, rides the combine.

Photograph of filling a newly constructed trench silo that was built with a bulldozer and D6 Caterpillar tractor owned and operated by district supervisors. Cost: $24.00. Capacity: 100 to 125 tons. Silo is 100 feet long, 8 feet deep and about 10 feet wide. This feed was harvested from a 22 acre field which 3 years ago was so severely depleted and eroded that it produced few crops that would not exceed 2 feet in height & some of the land was even too poor for that, according to Mr. C.E. Harvey, a neighbor who is "swapping work." The field was terraced and conservation treated 3 years ago and this year the 22 acre field is producing about 120 tons of Kafir corn for silage, says Alvin Bradney (feeding ensilage chopper) and another neighbor unloads feed from wagon on right.
