Photograph of eight acres of sweet clover planted in late October. The day before this picture was taken [taken on 1/28/1944}, 17 hogs, 1 horse, 24 grown cattle, 1 Brahma bull, and 10 calves were put out to graze and were still grazing by March 7, 1944. Top wall eaten off. Sweet clover was planted on different dates and fields are pastured by use of electric fences to graze in rotation. TX-41, 435.

Photograph of native grass pasture overgrazed. Native grass pasture overgrazed with additional drought damage. Soil Conservation program started in 1941 on this farm. Until recently this ranch was one of our examples of proper use. Droughts of 1954, 1955 and 1956 reduced the carrying capacity of the range so that it is now badly overgrazed. Mrs. J. H. Carlock, Ardmore is the owner. Roy Skaggs is the foreman-operator. OK-389-2.

Photograph of native grass seeding. Native grass seeding made in 1950 on the right. Meadow on the left was overgrazed while considerable growth was left on the seeded areas. No fertilizers were used in either area. The Soil conservation Service [SCS] began here on this ranch in 1941. The right area was terraced in 1947 and was seeded to native bluestem mixture in 1950. borders being watered to check on land leveling work, prior to seeding alfalfa. Shows areas needing additional work. Soil Conservation Service program started in 1954 on this farm with irrigation surveys being made on 27 acres. Adequate water source was not found until 1956. Two sources now being developed. Photograph of Post Oak and Blackjack control on shallow savannah site, fair range condition class, prior to first treatment in 1956. First treatment consisted of 2 pounds of 2-4-5T herbicide per acre and was applied on June 1, 1956. Second treatment was 1 pound of 2-4-5T per acre applied on July 1, 1957. This pasture was completely rested during the growing season in 1956 and 1957 and has now improved to good range condition class. OK-874-7.

Gully to be Shaped
Photograph of a gully to be shaped. K.E. Riley, SCS Technician in gully showing comparative depth. Top soil will be stock piled on a small area to allow for shaping of gully. Once a section is shaped, top soil from an adjoining section is used to cover area shaped and at the same time uncovering another section to be shaped. After shaping is completed area will be fertilized and sodded to bermuda grass.
