Jose Maria Chavez

Description of a photo of Jose Maria Chavez from a paper written in 1966 for a Marfa High School history class by Mary Melendez reads, "The picture was taken in 1917. The person is Jose Maria Chavez. He was serving in the army when the picture was taken. He served during World War I. He was at that time married to Christina Magallenez. They were living in Marfa at that time. After he completed his military services he came home to Marfa where his wife was. They had four children to take care of and send to school. He was a cook by occupation and worked for ranchers around the Marfa area. With the money he earned he sent his children to school to learn to read and write. He always tried to give his family whatever they needed."

In this photograph, several people are standing on an unpaved road against a wooden fence which encloses a house and yard. In the foreground there are seven people, from left to right: a young boy dresed casually; an older gentleman dressed in a suit and tie holding his hat at his side; a young child dressed in white sitting on a fence post and being held by a woman in a white dress; a second woman, also in a white dress and holding a baby; and another man, also dressed in a suit and tie, wearing a hat and standing in the yard (on the other side of the fence). Behind them, the house is built out of bricks and has a small porch with white pillars, a chair, and some plants in containers. A barrel and some indistinguishable items are visible in the yard and at the back of the house.

Mr. and Mrs. Adolfo Brito in 1910

Photographic portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Adolfo Brito in 1910. He wears a suit with a hat and she has on a long dark dress. They were both born in Cuchillo Parado, Mexico. Mr. Brito was a high-ranking officer for Pancho Villa. He was killed by Mexican Federalists during a raid in Chihuahua. His wife died of old age in Marfa, Texas.

Both are dressed up: the man is wearing slacks, a striped shirt, and a tie with a hat; the woman is wearing a long white dress. They are both holding objects in their hands and the woman is looking at hers, rather than at the camera. The man is standing to the left and has his left arm around her shoulders. In the left of the photograph, an old-style automobile is partially visible. In the background to the right, the area where they are standing is covered in grass and brush with trees and mountains in the distance. At the bottom of the photograph, the names W. W. Bogel and Eda Jenkins Hubbard are handwritten in ink. (The name "Bert [...] Hubbard" was written and then scratched out.) A handwritten note on the back of the photograph says, "Bloys Camp Meeting circa 1913-1916."

Officer's Line, Fort Davis, Texas

In this photograph, there are about 10 buildings that appear to be identical, all in a line. A handwritten note on the front says "Officers Line" which suggests that the buildings are the houses of the officers and their families. Each house has a dark roof and five white pillars that form the rim of the porch. There are trees interspersed among the houses. In front of the buildings, there is a large area that is fenced in and contains several animals. Behind the houses, there is a rocky ridge covered in desert scrub and plants. This postcard was sent to "Mr. Frank Russell" in Marfa, Texas and the postmark is from Casa Piedra, Texas sent August 27, 1915. The text, handwritten in ink, reads: "Dear Frank:- This card re-calls memories of much a _happy_ day and each moon-light night that we have been riding & have wished that you were with us. Don't work too hard but come out here if you can. Lovingly, Mabel."
