Reactions of Preoxidized Beryllium Powder in Moist Carbon Dioxide

Breakaway corrosion of Be in moist CO2 can be avoided if the Be is fabricated using preoxidized powder. The powder is preoxidized by heating in dry O/sub 2/. Preoxidation of Be powder was measured as a function of temperature and time of heating in O/sub 2/. The subsequent reactions of the preoxidized powder in moist CO/sub 2/ at 700 deg C were studied and the effect of increasing amounts of added oxide was measured. A model is proposed to explain the inhibition of corrosion by added oxide. (auth)

Neutron Dosimetry in and Around Human Phantoms By Use of Nuclear Track Emulsion

The validity of the nuclear track emulsion technique for fast-neutron dosimetry is examined in the exposure of a human phantom to PuBe neutrons, Semiautomatic track scanning and high-speed data analysis obviate the major disadvantages of emulsion dosimetry, and allow the absolute differential proton track energy spectrum at various locations in the phantom to be obtained without a serious cost in time. From this are calculated the total absorbed local tissue dose due to proton recoils and the local thermal neutron intensity during irradiation.

Test Program for 30 Megawatt Prototype Sodium Intermediate Heat Exchanger and Steam Generator

The designer's concept of a test program for the 30-Mw prototype intermediate heat exchanger and steam generator designed and fabricated as part of the Sodium Components Development Program is presented. The performance data will serve to verify the thermal design, or allow application of improved techniques to future designs, give an improved basis for stress analysis in design of future units, and demonstrate the capability and limitations of the units in relation to the performance specifications for which they were designed. Welding techniques for type 316 stainless steel are described. The specifications and operating conditions of the units are given along with instrumentation drawings showing test equipment design and arrangement.

Cost Estimation for Nuclear Reprocessing Plants : a Comparison of Methods

A comparison of methods of capital cost estimation used for nuclear fuel reprocessing plants shows that, because of the special nature and complexity of such plants, cost estimation methods for conventional chemical plants involving the use of cost factors are not applicable and will give low estimates. Cost factors which are available from other countries where reprocessing plants are installed should be used with caution since those factors apply only for the particular design philosophy used and pertain to industrial conditions which are different in this county. Capital cost estimation methods involving direct take-offs from detailed design drawings are necessary to obtain reliable estimates. The methods of estimating operating costs for nuclear reprocessing and conventional chemical plants are similar.

This paper considers the duty of the physician to provide comfort and care for cancer patients and suggests four tenants for physicians to follow to assist with this: 1) No matter what the patient's condition, the physician shall be always available, even if only to listen and talk. 2) In spite of the ravages of cancer, the patient lives with it. 3.) The patient is an adult under guarantees of the constitution. and 4) The physician will always communicate with the patient. The paper ends with a discussion of the objectives for management of cancer patients.

The Adsorption and Surface Reactions of Hydrocarbons on Clean Iridium

From abstract: "The adsorption of ethane, ethylene and acetylene on clean iridium in a field emission microscope has been found to cause characteristic changes in the work function of the iridium surface. Further changes, which are time and temperature dependent, result when such surfaces are heated. Flash filament experiments have shown that the changes in work function upon heating are due to desorption reactions and that the desorbed product consists principally of hydrogen. By assuming a linear relationship between surface coverage and work function, it has been possible to determine the desorption kinetics from the observed rates of work function change at various temperatures. The results are consistent with a mechanism involving stepwise surface dehydrogenation in which a pair of hydrogen atoms is removed from the hydrocarbon molecule in each step, followed by desoption of the adsorbed hydrogen. At very high temperatures the remaining carbon atoms are removed, presumably by evaporation."

Hyperon Production by 3.25 Bev/c Antiprotons in Hydrogen

Preliminary results are presented on hyperon-anti-hyperon production in proton-anti-proton collisions at 3.25 Bev/c. The exposure consisted of approximately 40,000 pictures taken in the Brookhaven National Laboratory 20" liquid hydrogen bubble chamber. The anti-proton beam was extracted from the A.G.S. and electro-statically separated. An average of approximately 15 anti-protons per picture was obtained at this momentum with an estimated beam contamination of less than 10K. The beam momentum was determined from kinematical analysis of a large sample of events. The scanning and measuring of the film has been done both at Yale and at Brookhaven, as well as the analysis of the data. A combination of the data from both laboratories is presented.

The Separated Beam at the AGS - Performance with Antiprotons and π⁺ Mesons

During 1961 and 1962, a separated beam was designed and installed at the AGS for use with the 20 inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The beam utilizes electromagnetic velocity spectrometers in two stages of separation. Since the fall of 1962, the bubble chamber has taken 600,000 pictures containing antiprotons, K± mesons, and π± mesons as beam tracks. This paper concerns the use of the separated beam for antiprotons and π⁺ mesons.

Economic Factors of MFP Thermoelectric Generators

"Mixed Fission Products (MFP) for use as a heat source for thermoelectric generators will become increasingly available in the coming years. The Atomic Energy Commission sponsored program on solidification of nuclear wastes is now entering the hot-bench scale test phase. During this phase approximately 5000 thermal watts of two year old MFP could be produced monthly. Two different types of hot calcination pilot plants are planned for installation at the Hanford National Laboratories in the 1964 to 1966 time period. Each of these plants should be able to produce 160,000 thermal watts of two year MFP and 16,000 thermal watts of ten year MFP on a monthly basis. A full scale plant for a 15,000 Mw(e) nuclear economy is estimated to produce four to five times as much MFP as either of the pilot plants. Costs will be dependent upon AEC policy in effect at the time the plant is operating."

Time Dependence of Space Charge Beam Losses in the Cosmotron

An investigation was made of Cosmotron intensity versus time through the entire time interval from the beginning of injection to the completion of r-f capture. The induction electrode signal was used for the instantaneous measurement of beam intensity. Oscilloscope displays of the signal were photographed and traced. Base lines were filled in on the tracings and the area of the pulses measured with a polar planimeter. It was found that the relation losses of beam intensity increase with injection intensity (total injected charge), and that most of the losses take place in the time interval between the end of injection and the completion of the first synchrotron oscillation

Technical report. From Abstract : "The scandium-yttrium and scandium-zirconium were studied by thermal and x-ray methods. Both systems are characterized by complete solid solubility in the low temperature hexagonal form and in the high temperature bcc form. In the Sc-Y system, there is a minimum in the solidus at 50 at. pct and 1365°C, while the solidus in the Sc-Zr system follows a nearly straight line relationship between the melting point of scandium and zirconium. There is a minimum in the temperature of transition from hexagonal to bcc in the Sc-Y system at 43 at. pct Y and 1175°C; while the temperature of transition is raised in the Sc-Zr system to a maximum of 1415°C at 30 at. pct Zr."

From abstract: "The self-diffusion coefficient of yttrium in yttrium oxide has been determined for polycrystalline Y2O3 in the temperature range 1400 to 1800°C. Radioactive Y-91 was deposited on sintered specimens of 94 to 97% theoretical density. The specimens were annealed under vacuum and sectioned. The following equation describes the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient over the range studied: D = 2.41 x 10[^]-4 exp (-43,900/RT) cm[^]2/sec."
