Oral History Interview with Robert Lee Thomas, December 30, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert Lee Thomas. Thomas joined the Army in December 1944. He describes his training in intelligence and reconnaissance. Thomas was sent to the Philippines as a replacement and details going through a typhoon en route. He arrived in Manila after the city had been recaptured and was assigned to the Military Police. Thomas discusses some of the incidents he encountered during his duties including looking for a murder suspect and raiding a house of ill repute. He also served as a guard for General MacArthur in Manila and mentions how well he was fed in the kitchen during his shifts. Thomas returned to the US and was discharged in December of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Donald Andrew, August 30, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Donald Andrew Alfred. Alfred was born on 28 July 1925, graduated high school in 1942, and joined the Army Air Forces in 1943 at the age of seventeen. He served as a navigator with the 40th Bomb Squadron, 6th Bomb Group, 313th Bombardment Wing, 20th Air Force, aboard the B-29, called Dearly Beloved. In late 1944, they were stationed on Tinian and flew 27 missions over Japan, including Iwo Jima and Tokyo. After the war ended, they dropped supplies to American troops in Japan. Alfred returned to the US and received his discharge on 4 January 1946.

Oral History Interview with Elmer Ethun, September 30, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Elmer Ethun. Ethun was drafted into the Army Air Forces in March 1943 at Fort Sheridan. He completed basic training in Florida. He moved on to Camp Crowder, Missouri to telephone school. From there, he went to Hammer Field in Fresno, California to message center school and learned cryptography and Morse code. He was in the 2nd Airbase Communication Detachment. In April 1944 he was sent overseas to Calcutta, India, then to China. He worked in the message center as a cryptographer encoding and decoding messages. He left Calcutta and arrived in the States in December 1945 and was discharged. He made a career as a machinist.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Charles Maurice Penick. Penick joined the Navy in 1943. He completed Radio Operator and Submarine Schools by mid-1945. He was stationed at a submarine base on Mare Island in California, and had not yet been assigned to a submarine when the first atomic bomb was dropped on August 6. Penick assisted in decommissioning the USS Hammerhead (SS-364). He worked in the ship’s company on the base through his discharge in June of 1946.

Beginning March of 1945, he served as a Fireman aboard the USS Nashville (CL-43). They provided support for the landings at Brunei Bay, Borneo. In September they traveled to the Philippines, where they were stationed when the war ended. They transported troops back to the US, where Green was discharged in July of 1946.
