Deforestation in Brazilian Amazonia in 1990 was releasing approximately 281--282 X 10{sup 6} metric tons (MT) of carbon on conversion to a landscape of agriculture, productive pasture, degraded pasture, secondary forest and regenerated forest in the proportions corresponding to the equilibrium condition implied by current land-use patterns. Emissions are expressed as committed carbon,'' or the carbon released over a period of years as the carbon stock in each hectare deforested approaches a new equilibrium in the landscape that replaces the original forest. To the extent that deforestation rates have remained constant, current releases from the areas deforested in previous years will be equal to the future releases from the areas being cleared now. Considering the quantities of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, nitrous oxide, NO{sub x} and non-methane hydrocarbons released raises the impact by 22--37%. The relative impact on the greenhouse effect of each gas is based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) calculations over a 20-year time period (including indirect effects). This report assesses the possibility of increased oil production from 21 less developed non-OPEC countries (excluding the Middle East and Mexico) by 1985. The forecast is compared with those prepared by the World Bank, the International Energy Agency, and others. The 21 Latin American, African, and Far East (including Asia) countries produce 2.5 million barrels of oil per day (BD) or 4.2% of world production, and they have 21 billion barrels of proved reserves, or 3.2% of the world total. In recent years these countries have consumed 3.1 million BD, some 0.9 million barrels in excess of their production. By 1985, the 21 countries may produce 3.9 million BD, an average annual increase of 5.0%; however, demand is expected to increase at an annual rate of 3.5% to 4.4 million BD. The net effect is that the 1985 aggregated supply-demand balance will be in deficit, by nearly 560 thousand BD, compared to slightly more than 930 thousand BD in 1976.

Abstract: Uranium-bearing coal and carbonaceous shale .of the Rio Bonito formation of Pennsylvanian age have been found in the States of Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The uranium oxide content of the samples collected in the State of Sao Paulo ranges from 0.001 percent to 0.082 percent. The samples collected in Santa Catarina averaged about 0.002 percent uranium oxide; those collected in Rio Grande do Sul, about 0.003 percent uranium oxide. Since the field and laboratory investigations are still in their initial stages, only raw data on the radioactivity and uranium content of Brazilian coals are given in this report.

From abstract: Uraniferous coal has been found in northeast Parana', Brazil, in the Rio Bonito formation of Pennsylvanian age. In the majority of coal samples taken the uranium oxide content ranges from 0.005 to 0.030 percent, but selected screened samples have contained as much as 0.45 percent uranium oxide. The sampled thickness of the coal seam ranges from 17 to 54 centimeters and averages 31 centimeters. Channel samples across the entire thickness of the coal zone were taken in two places. All other samples were taken as grab samples from either mine waste dumps or coal zones that had high radioactivity.

From introduction: This report describes the results of reconnaissance for radioactivity of rocks, exclusive of coal, in the States of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul during the years 195 through 1956. Reports on reconnaissance and detailed studies of uraniferous coal are being prepared for publication. This report concerns work performed by the Brazilian National Nuclear Energy Commission and the United States Geological Survey (on behalf of the United States Atomic Energy Commission), and it is published with the permission of these agencies.

From introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the quantity and quality of [Central Ceara, Brazil] magnesite, and the writer concludes that this group of deposits constitutes one of the major reserves of high-grade magnesite in the Western Hemisphere. The ore could be used in the production of any commercial grade of magnesia with little or no beneficiation. Soil and alluvial overburden is thin between widespread outcrops, so all the deposits could be mined from open pits.

From abstract: Radioactive manganese deposits have been found in two swamps and at one locality on the northeast bank of the Rio Itapicuru near Mosquete, municipio of Itapicuru, State of Bahia, Brazil. The occurrences are related to warm springs and consist of surficial manganiferous sinter and of sandstone impregnated with manganese.
