The traditional major-minor tonality and the means for its establishment have been developed and used for the last four centuries, until all the possibilities of musical ideas within the given frame of tonal coherence seem now to be exhausted. Today we see a violent change, affecting the basic vocabulary of music as well as musical grammar and syntax. The possibilities of the major-minor tonality seem to be overgrown and appear to be no longer sufficiently flexible to serve the creative spirit of present-day music as basis for musical expression. Thoughtful composers and theorists, however much they may differ in their background and in their attitude toward different traits of modern music, agree in the realization that musical composition is at a crucial point of development all of over the world.

The problem of this study was to formulate a proposed physical education program for the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade boys in the two elementary schools of Arlington, Texas. The plan will be based upon accepted educational purposes and sound physical education concepts.

The problem was to study several hydrocarbons when they were subjected to ultraviolet light of 2536 Å in the presence of mercury vapor. It would be expected from the work of Stallings that the rupture of any tertiary hydrogen bond in the molecule would be the predominant effect. However, secondary and primary bond splitting would occur as well as some C-C bond rupturing, but these could be expected to a lesser degree than the first, since the t-hydrogen has the greatest reactivity.

This study of Verdi's choral style in the Manzoni Requiem includes an investigation of the bibliography pertaining to the subject, and a detailed study of the score to determine and verify the characteristics of each stylistic component, tabulating statistical material and listing examples demonstrating the various characteristics.

This study was undertaken to try to determine of objective measurement of certain personality traits would indicate that music students are characterized by marked differences in personality make-up. In carrying out this investigation, a group of 100 music students and a control group of the same size were used. The type of measurement used was of such objective nature that evaluations could be made by other persons on identically the same trait indicators as were used in securing information from the person himself. The fact is of great importance, as it makes possible an evaluation of a person's personality by the group in which he is striving for social acceptance. Data for this study were obtained at North Texas State Teachers College during the spring semester of 1946, using cases from the Music Department and the remainder of the college for the two groups.

The significance of this opera, Le Devin du Village, lies not in the fact that it is great music, but in the fact of its historical importance. Its appearance in 1752, with its revolutionary ideas, heralds the coming of what we consider today as native French comic opera; i. e., native in the sense that it is composed by Frenchmen, although adapted from the Italian style in many respects. Another claim of uniqueness that might be made for this work is that its composer was no recognized musician, but one of the greatest pre-Revolution philosophers. His open-minded ness and eagerness to break loose the bonds of the traditional French "Chauvinism" and musical isolationism, brought forth this musical effort on his part, clothed in native atmosphere, yet embodying the spirit of Italian music. From the private library of Isaac Lloyd Hibberd, the writer was fortunate in having access to a first edition of Le Devin du Village, which has added greatly to an appreciable understanding of the music of this work.

The ultimate aim of this thesis is twofold: first, to present the sterling attributes of leathercraft to those who have never worked with leather; secondly, to give both the beginner and the advanced craftsman a valuable book of designs and patterns.The first section of this thesis depicts the history of leatherwork. Following this section is a number of designs and projects accompanied by instructions developed by the writer as a recommended course for junior and senior high schools.

The problem which is reported in these pages represents an attempt to bring into one work a critical and analytical survey of the material currently available in the field of music therapy. There is such a wealth of new material, especially since the termination of the war, that the necessity for a new and up-to-date compilation of material is evident. The objective of this thesis is to collect general information as to the theory and practices of music therapy, rather than to secure for purposes of statistical analysis great numbers of detailed items in regard to a technique that has not yet been carried to a point where it can be standardized. However, this compilation does include some actual experiments which have been conducted in hospitals with the object of determining the effect on physical and mental patients of certain musical compositions and certain instruments.

To determine to what extent six-man football was meeting the needs of the small high school. 2. to determine trends in regard to the organization, administration, and conduct of the game in Texas. 3. "This comparative study of the required physical education program for men students offered by the North Texas State Teachers college and the physical training program offered to Naval aviation cadets was made to determine the type of additional training necessary for an adequate program at North Texas State Teachers College which will improve the physical condition of the men students."--1.

It was this writer's problem to determine which of these two contentions is correct; i.e., to find out whether or not it is possible for a person to perceive a difference in 2/4 and 4/4 meters by listening to the accents. It was felt that a large group of college music students and faculty members should provide satisfactory subjects for this experiment. If, as a result of this experiment, it was found that these trained musicians could actually discriminate between the simple meter and its compound with any marked degree of consistency, it would then be admitted that the difference in the two meters is important. If, however, it was found that even musicians, who knew the technical distinctions between 2/4 and 4/4, could not really hear the difference in the two when the music was played by competent performers, it would then be contended that no important difference exists.

The general purpose of this study is to make a survey of children's library work in the United States with special attention to recent trends and developments in this field as revealed in current practice. The specific purpose is to make an evaluation of the services rendered by the children's division of the Dallas Public Library and to determine how this department measures up to the standards set up by the American Library Association and by individual authorities.

"This study was made to determine whether or not Gainesville Junior College Commercial Department at Gainesville, Texas, is meeting the probable future needs of business employers and employees. An attempt is being made to find which courses could be enriched to advantage and the nature of the material to be used in the enrichment. All factual information in this study was gained through fifty questionnaires which were sent to business graduates of 1935-1945 of Gainesville Junior College. " -- leaf 1

The subsequent study is an outgrowth of observations made during a year spent in secondary voice teaching on the college level. For the purpose of working toward a more effective and efficient secondary voice program, the following material is presented. The first part of the study is a critical analysis and comparison of six methods of voice teaching designed for, or adaptable to, class voice teaching. The second part of the study is a suggested plan for teaching secondary voice in classes, including an outline of material which could be used.

The problem of absolute or positive pitch has been studied by a considerable number of researchers. This cannot be said, however, for the problem of the element of tempo, or the normal speed of the true beat in music. The reason for this probably lies in the fact that absolute pitch can be measured quite accurately, for it is dependent upon the anatomy and physiology of the ear. On the other hand, a means whereby the innate pulse in music can be externalized so as to be capable of exact expression and measure in number, presents a challenge to those interested in further investigation of this phenomenon.

Since the civilization, population and living standards of the peoples of the world have increased in such gigantic proportions, especially in the last fifty years; and since the supply of natural resources cannot meet the demand, we have of necessity had to find new materials to take their place. These new materials must fulfill two purposes; namely, to take the place of the natural resources so wantonly destroyed and to meet requirements that the natural materials are not able to meet. Foremost among these new materials are the synthetic resinous materials known as plastics. Plastics are one way of getting around the fact that Nature has not thought of everything. The ability of man to imagine things that he does not see and to fashion these things from what he finds around him is responsible for what we call progress -- and for plastics.

The data concerning this subject have been taken from Brazoria County newspapers, The Alvin Sun newspaper files, Alvin School Board Minutes, Alvin School annuals, city records of Alvin and personal interviews. These data have been carefully selected and taken from reliable sources."

The purpose of this study is to determine how well the list published by the Texas Board of Education meets the requirements established by studies in the field by comparing it with a number of other lists of known value, which have been compiled by experts on the basis of the studies mentioned.

The problem of the investigator is the compilation of an exhaustive list of art songs other than those dealing with subjects of a romantic or religious nature.

The problem selected for the study in the recent research project was to determine the effectiveness of the Sour Lake, Texas, High School library program as it was reflected through the reading experiences of the thirty-one first-year high school pupils for the year 1945-1946. These reading experiences were analyzed on the basis of the number and the classifications of the books charged from the library by the pupils for use in the various academic subjects. For the purposes of the study, the books were grouped in accordance with the arrangement of the Dewey Decimal System of classification, which is the system used by the school librarian in classifying and cataloging all library materials. Although the principal phase of the investigation involved a study of the books circulated, an analysis was made also of the books and other library materials used for factual information and for special classroom assignments.

The problems arising in the conception, composing and perfecting of a composition may be divided into two types (1) Those connected with the composition itself; and (2) Those pertaining to the interpretation of the moods and thematic variations of the composition by the orchestra.

This study was made to show the growth and development of the recreation movement; the acquisition of property, and improvements; costs; facilities; activities; and participation from the beginning of the movement in the City of Dallas, Texas from 1876 to 1946.

Since the East Texas area has many minerals in the categories which yield semiprecious stones of commercial value--jasper, wood agate, wood opal, and silicified stone, the author undertook this study to determine: (1) the extent which these minerals could be utilized as sources for gems; (2) the equipment necessary for cutting and polishing the stones; and (3) the techniques for finishing the gems.

Determination of gains made in reading comprehension and the relationship of these gains to the academic success of 545 college freshmen of North Texas State Teachers College is the main consideration of this study.
