Two Movements : For Large Wind Ensemble

Serenade for Viola and Orchestra (open access)

Serenade for Viola and Orchestra

The Serenade for Viola and Orchestra is a one-movement composition of three connecting sections with two main themes of contrasting character. The "relatedness" of the sections does not depend on common thematic material, but rather on a system whereby motives evolve out of the thematic material and from elements in preceding sections. The sonorous timbre of the viola is exploited and becomes the central tessitura for the piece. The title is representative of the lyrical nature of the composition as a whole, especially the first and third section.

Fallout Strontium-90 and Cesium-137 in Northern Alaskan Ecosystems During 1959--1970 (open access)

Fallout Strontium-90 and Cesium-137 in Northern Alaskan Ecosystems During 1959--1970

Thesis. Cycling routes, rates of transport, and resultant concentrations of the fallout radionuclides /sup 90/Sr and /sup 137/Cs in northern Alaskan ecosystems were defined during the period 1959 to 1970. Radiochemical analysis of extensive samples of biota and whole-body counting of / sup 137/Cs in Eskimo and Indian ethnic groups were related to ecological principles, especially the concept of trophic niche, which elucidated the observed patterns of radionuclide concentrations. Experiments involving Sr and Cs radioisotopes applied to natural Cladonia-- Cetraria lichen carpets yielded effective half-times of 1.O to 1.6 years for Sr and more than 10 years for Cs. Direct and indirect estimates of /sup 131/Cs half-times in Eskimos on a caribou meat diet were made by dietary manipulation and by relating dietary /sup 137/Cs intake and resultant change between periodic whole body counts. Effective half- times of 70 days for adults (more than 21 years old) and minors (14 to 20 years old) and of 45 days for children (less than 14 years old) were found. Suitable mathematical models were used to compute lichen forage ingestion rates of free- ranging adult caribou (4.5 to 5.0 kg dry weight per day), caribou meat ingestion rates of Anaktuvuk Pass residents (up …

Wagner's Das Liebesverbot (open access)

Wagner's Das Liebesverbot

Wagner's second opera Das Liebesverbot, composed in 1835 and first performed in Magdeburg in 1836, could be termed Wagner's "Italian" opera. It represents Wagner's attitudes and feelings at the time of its composition. During this period in Wagner's life the composer had become particularly enchanted with Italian music and also with the Italian way of sensuous and carefree living. At the same time his disillusionment with German conservatism and pedantry also had an influence on the composition of this opera.

Primary Productivity and Nutrient Relationships in Garza-Little Elm Reservoir (open access)

Primary Productivity and Nutrient Relationships in Garza-Little Elm Reservoir

A large, multi-basin reservoir (Garza-Little Elm Reservoir) in north central Texas was studied to determine the relative effects of various parameters on primary productivity. The basins were impounded several years apart, thus allowing the influence of age on water chemistry and biota to be considered. Another principal influence on water quality was secondary sewage effluent that entered one basin from a nearby source.

Level of Manifest anxiety as a Predictor of Attitude Change Through Group Vocational Counseling

This study was conducted to compare changes in self-concept and dogmatism among high school subjects at three levels of manifest anxiety following group vocational counseling. The related literature includes studies of anxiety as it affects self-concept, dogmatism, and group activities. Studies of the relationship between self-concept and dogmatism are also reported.

Effects of a Methylcholanthrene-Induced Lymphosarcoma on the Blood of DBA/1J and Swiss White Mice

The investigation was concerned with characterizing effects of this tumor line on lipid metabolism in DBA/1J mice and serum protein levels and cellular changes in DBA/1J and Swiss white mice. Total lipids, lipid phosphorus, neutral lipids, and changes in fatty acids were determined in liver, spleen, skin and tumor of DBA/1J mice bearing the lymphosarcoma at various days after injection of tumor cells.

A system of selection and human resource development for small retailers of apparel and accessories

The problem with which this study is concerned is that of constructing a system of selection and human resource development for small retailers of apparel and accessories. The study has a twofold purpose. The first is to determine the extent to which organized selection and training practices exist in small apparel and accessory retailing establishments, and the general attitude which small retailers of apparel and accessories express toward the value of selection and training functions. The second is to construct a practical system which can be used in small apparel and accessory retailing establishments.

Electron density and collision frequency studies using a resonant microwave cavity as a probe

Electron densities and collision frequencies were obtained on a number of gases in a dc discharge at low pressures (0.70-2mm of Hg). These measurements were performed by microwave probing of a filament of the dc discharge placed coaxially in a resonant cavity operating in a TM010 mode. the equipment and techniques for making the microwave measurements employing the resonant cavity are described.
