1. A study was made of the food habits of college students. 2. Nine women's and five men's boarding houses contributed data over a period of 15 to 84 consecutive days regarding food purchases and the number served. 3. The individual houses reported from 24 to 323 students fed daily. 4. In no case was the food expenditure for fruits and vegetables less than 20 per cent, the range being 21 to 38 per cent. 5. The money spent for milk and milk products was greater for the men's houses than for the women's; five of the eight women's houses exceeded the 20 per cent mark while two of the five men's houses exceeded it. 6. The portion of the food dollar spent for meat, fish, eggs, and poultry on the whole was high, the range being 18 to 40 per cent. 7. None of the houses spent a fifth of the food expenditure for bread and cereals, the range being 4 to 14 per cent. 8. The purpose of this study is to present the development of the home economics program of the Teachers College High School from its beginning to the present time of the thesis. It aims to show the type and number of of courses offered, the number of and classification of students enrolled, and what provision was made for the supervision of instruction in these classes. The main body of the thesis is composed of five chapters, which may be outlined in the following manner. Chapter II is a historical sketch of the Teachers College High School. It tells the story of the founding of the parent institution, its development into a teacher's college, and the establishment of a demonstration school as a teacher-training laboratory for college students. Chapter III of the study traces the course offerings in the high school from 1909 to 1939. In this connection, the nature and number of the courses offered are discussed and attention is given to the development of various new phases of the work. Table I shows the development. The organization of the Emergency Conservation Work was found to possess many faults. The Seventy-Fifth Congress, taking cognizance of some of the more glaring imperfections, approved a measure reorganizing and re-establishing the Emergency Conservation Work under the name of The Civilian Conservation Corp. The bill eliminated many of the defects of the former organization, and invested authority and defined duties and regulations in such a manner that a more efficient institution resulted.

The following chapters attempt to show the work that has been done toward restoration, preservation, and marking of historic spots in Texas by patriotic societies, individuals, civic groups, the Centennial Commission, and other agencies. It has not been the purpose of the writer to go into details regarding every one of the sites and individual markers, especially in instances in which several of the same type were erected. In such cases a general description of the markers is given, together with a general idea of the type of inscription that appears on them. Since so much was done by the Centennial Commission, more attention has been devoted to its activities than to those of other organizations unable to carry out such an extensive program...in many instances it has been necessary to rely upon information from magazines, newspapers, Chamber of Commerce bulletins, pamphlets, and personal letters, because of lack of recorded materials. The information obtained, however, has been weighed and carefully compared with other sources on the same subject until its authenticity is assured.

Since one of the most important functions of a state teachers college is the proper placement of its graduates in teaching positions, this study was made to determine whether or not this function is being satisfactorily performed by the Placement Office of the North Texas State Teachers College. This study contains four chapters. The first chapter contains the introduction, a brief history of the Placement Office of the North Texas State Teachers College, its organization, functions it performs, its administrative policies, and some of the general practices followed. The first chapter is concluded with facts about the cost of placements made through the Placement Office, and the demands made by schools upon the Placement Office, as indicated by the calls received in the Office for teachers. Chapter two is a presentation of the data secured from questionnaires to five hundred registrants in the North Texas State Teachers College Placement Office, and from sixty superintendents of schools in Texas. The purpose of this study is to discover and report the history of the Green Jacket Club of the North Texas State Teachers College from its origin to the present time, to find out how many similar clubs have been organized by Green Jacket members in the secondary schools of Texas, and to show how the club is organized compared with the original Green Jacket Club. The following conclusions were made: 1. The members of the Green Jacket Club of the North Texas State Teachers College were a representative group of girls, for the eighty-two studied had majored or minored in sixteen of the nineteen major departments offered by the college. 2. The Green Jacket members surveyed were a professional and progressive group of girls, since exactly fifty per cent have continued their education by doing graduate work. 3. The members of the Green Jacket Club have expressed their loyalty to North Texas State Teachers College by their return to the Teachers College campus to do their graduate work. 4. The purpose of this study was to trace the history and development of the Health and Physical Education Program in North Texas State Teachers College from the year 1914 to 1939 to determine the contribution this department has made in the development of the College. As a reslut of the foregoing study, the following conclusions were reached: 1. The success of the Health and the Physical Education Department was due to the foundation upon which it was built; this foundation was laid by responsible and well-trained men and women. 2. The personnel has increased from one teacher to nine regular staff members. 3. The number of credit courses in the department has increased in twenty-five years from one to forty-three. 4. The students trained in this department are equipped to teach all phases of Health and Physical Education work in the public and private schools, and in the various types of summer camps. 5. The Health and Physical Education facilities have grown from a two room gymnasium in the basement of the Historical Building, a baseball field, a tennis court and basketball court, to a well-equipped Health and Physical Education plant. This study was made of the school districts in the East Texas oil field in Rusk and Gregg Counties. These school districts have a dense rural population, the majority of whom are engaged in some type of oil field work. Financially, these school districts are considered the wealthiest in the state, and in general are similar to most oil field sections in the South. A total of twelve different transportation systems, operating sixty-five buses, transporting 8,758 school children were studied. In this study, efficient methods of transporting school children, methods of administering transportation, contracting, types of roads, qualifications of drivers, equipment, and cost in these oil field districts were considered.

This study was made to determine when and why the program of playground activities began in the elementary schools of Dallas, Texas, and how this program has developed. A study was made of the platoon school system to determine the necessity for supervised play periods, and the influence of this need on the growth of the playground activity programs.

The purpose of this study was to show the growth and development of the recreation program for men and women in the North Texas State Teachers College from 1911 to 1939. This thesis has attempted to show in chronological order that the growth and development of the year-round recreation program at North Texas State Teachers College was a result of two underlying factors; leisure time, and the innate tendency of man to express his emotions through the avenue of play.

For many years adventurers from Spain and France had explored Texas. For about fifty years Spain had tried to civilize and Christianize the Indians in East Texas. Finally the Spanish government had abolished the missions and presidios. During the following fifty years, very little had been done toward colonization in Texas. In 1821, Texas was an almost uninhabited country, with the exception of savage Indians. The Anglo-Americans came and changed it into a great state. The East Texas Timber Region has been the gateway through which most of the settlers came to Texas. The settlers who stopped there did their part in establishing the present state of Texas. The East Texans did their part in helping to win freedom from Mexico so they could lay a foundation for American civilization there.
