The Effect of Music Activities on the Total Adjustment of a Third Grade Group (open access)

The Effect of Music Activities on the Total Adjustment of a Third Grade Group

The purpose of this work is not to justify the teaching of music in the public schools; that has been done by the authorities to the extent that music in some form is in the curriculum of the majority of American public schools today. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of certain music activities on the total adjustment of a group of third grade children and to show possible advantages of the teaching of music as a part of the regular teacher's load.

A Quantitative and Qualitative Bacterial Analysis of the Sewage Disposal System of Perryton, Texas

This investigation had for its purpose the determination of first, the inefficiency of the Perryton, Texas, sewage disposal plant proper; and second the potential effectiveness of a lagoon now used to complete the sewage purification; and consequently, offset an apparent health hazard. The problem, as pursued, has consisted of first, the collection of sewage samples from the six stations listed in Table 1 over the period of time from September 23, 1949 to May 14, 1950; second, a quantitative analysis of each sample in order to determine the number of bacterial organisms present; third, a qualitative analysis of each sample in order to determine more expecially the presence of members of the genera Aerobacter, Escherischia, Salmonella and Shigella; and fourth, an attempt to evaluate the potentialities of the natural purification factors of the lagoon.

An Evaluation of the Influence of Parent Interest on Child Achievement (open access)

An Evaluation of the Influence of Parent Interest on Child Achievement

A number of investigations of pupil progress in school have definitely shown that the percentage of failure in the first grade is much higher than in the other grades. In the light of these investigations, it is safe to assume that there must be a number of contributing factors to this failure in grade progress. The nature of these factors and what the school can do, if anything, to mitigate their influence on pupil progress in the first grade constitute a challenge to educational research. The present study undertakes an investigation along these lines. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to investigate the need for a pre-school program; (2) to study the reported values of such a program; and (3) to survey a certain number of schools to determine the extent and nature of preschool programs if any.

A Suggested System of Forms for Controlling the Flow of Materials and Equipment to and from the Producing Areas of a Petroleum Company (open access)

A Suggested System of Forms for Controlling the Flow of Materials and Equipment to and from the Producing Areas of a Petroleum Company

A rather unique situation presents itself in the control off materials in the petroleum industry because of great areas to cover, diversified activities within those areas, and a multiplicity of operating units being served from the depot of supplies. It is the purpose of this paper to look into the particular problems of keeping an adequate system of stores records in the oil business. The control of materials and stores distributed from the field operating unit is of necessity achieved through the use or various forms or records written as evidence of transactions among the production units being served. The prime motive of using the forms is to facilitate the movement of goods to their destination within the unit served and to provide an accurate record of the materials received, stored, and distributed.

Bach's Treatment of the Chorale in the Chorale Cantatas (open access)

Bach's Treatment of the Chorale in the Chorale Cantatas

The Chorale Cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach are outstanding examples of his ingenuity. The existing data on the Chorale Cantatas are distributed throughout numerous volumes by many scholars. They have written much about the cantatas in general but not so much specifically about the chorales in them. In this thesis, the emphasis is on the chorales and Bach's treatment of them in the Chorale Cantatas. An historical approach to the cantata and the chorale is given as a preliminary to the treatment of the chorale in the chorale cantata. This was done that the reader might have a better understanding of them. The necessary material for this thesis was gathered from dictionaries, music lexicons, books, articles and the music principally in the Bach-gesellschaft edition. The material is organized according to the following plan: 1. The Church Cantata and its origin; the development of the Church Cantata in Germany; the use of the cantata in the worship service. 2. The Chorale, its origin and development; its changes as a result of the Reformation; its use in church services, and its use in musical composition. 3. Bach's treatment of the Chorale in musical forms. 4. Bach's treatment of the words of the …

An Evaluative Study to Determine the Present Status of the Administration of Public Recreation in Denton, Texas, with a Proposed Plan for Future Development

The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the public recreation of Denton under the present administrative setup is serving the needs of the citizenship of Denton. The Economic Development of the Texas Panhandle (open access)

The Economic Development of the Texas Panhandle

"From the time the first settlers arrived in any region to the present time, numerous changes in their economic life occurred. In the thirty-eight counties of the Texas Panhandle and upper plains, these changes have occurred in rapid order; for in only the past seventy-five years (1875-1950), this region has progressed from one of buffalo hunters to businessmen, through intervening stages of cowboys, "nesters," farmers, and "dust eaters." The purpose of this study is to evaluate each step, thereby enabling the reader to gain a general knowledge as to what the economic situation in the panhandle is based upon today. The area to be studied is composed of the seven northern tiers of counties in the Panhandle and upper plains of Texas. These seven tiers contain thirty-eight counties with an approximate are of 23,491,840 acres. The western part of the Panhandle is located on the Great Plains, or High Plains, while about a third of the area is situated in the North Central Plains. " -- leaf 1.

An Evaluation of the Health and Safety Education of Montague County, Texas, Schools (open access)

An Evaluation of the Health and Safety Education of Montague County, Texas, Schools

Health is a primary objective of modern education. It was named as the first of the seven cardinal principles of education. Over a period of years the health and safety of the school children have gradually become more firmly fixed as a part of the school program. Modern schools, when adequately staffed and administered, provide experiences in healthful daily living, an opportunity to become acquainted with good health services, a chance to learn something about the care of ones own body, the maintenance of health, and the prevention of disease. Thus the schools have come to contribute to community health through their planned programs of health service and through cooperation with other health and safety agencies.

The Influence of Motion Picture Techniques on the Status and Character of Music Designed to Accompany Dramatic Forms (open access)

The Influence of Motion Picture Techniques on the Status and Character of Music Designed to Accompany Dramatic Forms

Our modern motion picture composers are limited by the necessity of fitting musical impulses to action. The timing is a matter of split-second synchronization. The writers have no classical form to follow as each script requires highly individualistic treatment, highly restricted time elements, and highly technical instrumentation. Therefore, every composition is a challenge. The challenge includes not only the time element but a demand for a greater amount of originality in musical line and mood setting.
