The letter is in regards to an education unit sent by Hopper to Duke focusing on Native American Sioux Culture developed by Hopper and Dr. Barbara Erwin. Duke appreciates the interest in Hopper sharing her work with the Center, however, the Center is not able to endorse the product. Enclosed in the letter to Hopper, Duke has added a list of regional institute directors who could be interested in the discipline-based art education and the unit on Sioux culture. North Texas State University has recently received a planning grant from the Getty Center for Education in the Arts, an operating program of the J. Paul Getty Trust, to plan for the establishment of North Texas Regional Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts "North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts,". Hurley writes that they appreciated Wright's support in obtaining the planning grant, and would like to invite Wright to be a guest for lunch and an executive briefing on the project at the Pinnacle Club, Interfirst Bank Building, June 17, 1987.

Photocopy of a letter from Leilani Lattin Duke, director of the Getty Center to Jack Davis, co-director of NTIEVA, in regards to the articles from the Dallas Morning News, Davis had sent prior. Duke writes that she is pleased to see that the Dallas schools are adding seventeen more art and music teachers to their elementary schools and wonders if Dallas ISD is open to the DBAE program, discipline-based art education.

Davis and McCarter regret that Wright was unable to join them for the executive briefing on the North Texas Regional Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, "North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts" (NTIEVA), Wednesday, June 19. Following the briefing was an all-day workshop, Friday, June 21 which was attended by staff representatives from each consortium in the Institute, to discuss grant proposals which with offer opportunities for staff development and curriculum implementation in the visual arts. Enclosed at the end of the letter to Wright is information the functional committees and their list of responsibilities, for the upcoming Matching Funds Advisory Committee and Wright's assistance in its regard. Asking if he recalls the lasting Advisory Committee meeting they had in which they set two priority goals. Their first goal to seek continued support for their Portfolio project and their second, to generate potential names for additional committee members. In the letter Davis, McCarter and Reynolds are pleased to report that the Edward and Betty Marcus Foundation has agreed to fully fund the portfolio project and it will be underway once their Summer Institute project is over. In the letter, they ask Anthony if he has any recommendations for committee members and to contact them through note of phone call. Additionally in the letter are details about the Institute's schedule for the summer, and a formal invitations for Anthony to join any them if his schedules allows.

Welcoming Dantzler to the second summer institute conducted by North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts being held from June 17 - 28. Principals are encouraged to attend the institute as much as possible, however, there are special events for the administrators on the first and last days of the institute and they will be paid a stipend of forty dollars.

McCarter and Davis write that they support the Californian and Regional Institutes doing a super-session at the Baltimore conference, but the presentations need to be more balanced between what works and what doesn't. They also like the idea of each institute doing a follow up session, identifying three or four topics in the areas where they have been successful.

Alford has given Hendrick an outlined suggestion for improving the elementary art program, based on research even the best staff development programs do not effect change unless there is follow up and continuous support, therefore their plans call for the addition of certified art teachers. Enclosed with the letter are abstracts about the improving the program. At the bottom of the cover page a scribbled note reads, "Jack, this is the packet that has been written for the board, Lynda."

Apologizing for not being able to go to the retreat, Friday June 1, 1990. Smith explains that he had a prior engagement that he had to attention and was unable to change them to attend the retreat. Smith writes that he looks forward to receiving more information regarding the advisory committee and the Institute.

The institute is a two-week program designed to provide training for the use of art education for school districts educators. The primary goal of the summer institute is to implement discipline-based art education into the participating districts, DBAE, is an approach to learning in the art that combines art production, criticism, aesthetics and art history.

The lecture on Dr. Barnes is a conjunction with an exhibition at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, as Dr. Barnes was considered one of the greatest art collectors in American history.

In the continuing article "PISD to hire art specialists," the school will be participating in two summer programs by the Getty Foundation to teach the faculty how to fully use the new concepts to tackle art education.
