A conversation between Daniel Tholung and Shekarnong Sankhil. This was a staged conversation for the sake of an undergraduate Phonetics and Phonology class at the University of North Texas. We recorded the conversation and then immediately used to demonstrate annotation with PRAAT acoustic software.

Sankhil Shetphong of Thamlapokpi sings and explains the meaning of the folk song Reite Penang and “Khuungpaar Laa”. The song translates as follows: Flower bloom but we don’t know when they disappear. After they bloom as they disappear from the whole mountain range. [areiyo paar re, reite penang paar ee]. Recording of the Mizos of Tezpur singing in Tezpur, Assam. These songs are in the zaikhawm hla style, which is a group singing style. zai means "to sing", khawm means "together," hla means "song". This type of music is often sung after a big meal or event, such as funerals or Christmas celebrations. People often get up and dance during these performances.
