Some Effects of Aileron Deflection on the Static Lateral and Directional Aerodynamic Characteristics of Four Contemporary Airplane Models (open access)

Some Effects of Aileron Deflection on the Static Lateral and Directional Aerodynamic Characteristics of Four Contemporary Airplane Models

Memorandum presenting some effects of aileron deflection on the static lateral and directional aerodynamic characteristics of four airplane models which are representative of aircraft capable of flight at supersonic speeds. The results are presented for subsonic Mach numbers ranging from 0.60 to 0.90 and for supersonic Mach numbers ranging from 1.20 to 1.90. They are limited to the most pertinent aerodynamic effects of ailerons contributing to the lateral and directional characteristics of each airplane type.

Material Compatibility With Gaseous Fluorine (open access)

Material Compatibility With Gaseous Fluorine

Report presenting static tests on the compatibility of gaseous fluorine with various liquids, solid plastics, waxes, and greases at pressures of 0 and 1500 pounds per square inch gage and atmospheric temperature. Several materials were found to be compatible at atmospheric pressure, but only Teflon and ruby were compatible under static conditions at 1500 pounds per square inch gage.

Aerodynamic Loads on Tails at High Angles of Attack and Sideslip (open access)

Aerodynamic Loads on Tails at High Angles of Attack and Sideslip

"Results are presented for the loads and moments acting on the individual tail surfaces of a body-tail combination over a wide range of angles of attack and sideslip. The effects of forebody length and panel-panel interference on the characteristics are included. It is shown that large nonlinear variations in these loads and moments, which occur at some combinations of angle of attack and sideslip, cannot be predicted by low-angle theory" (p. 1).

Effect of fuel variables on carbon formation in turbojet-engine combustors (open access)

Effect of fuel variables on carbon formation in turbojet-engine combustors

Report presents the results of an investigation of the effects of fuel properties and of a number of fuel additives on combustion-chamber carbon deposition and exhaust-gas smoke formation in a single tubular turbojet-engine combustor. Limited tests were conducted with a number of the fuels in several full-scale turbojet engines to verify single-combustor data.

Experimental Investigation of Creep Bending and Buckling of Thin Circular Cylindrical Shells (open access)

Experimental Investigation of Creep Bending and Buckling of Thin Circular Cylindrical Shells

"Forty-three cylinders of 40-inch length and 16-inch diameter, made of 5052-0 aluminum-alloy sheets of 0.023-, 0.040-, 0.051-, and 0.064-inch thickness, were subjected to bending moments constant along the cylinder and in time in an oven which maintained a constant temperature of 500 degrees Fahrenheit during the test. All the cylinders failed by buckling. The time that elapsed between load application and collapse was measured" (p. 1).

Effect of Boundary Solidity of Planing Lift Obtained in a High-Speed Water Jet With a Single Longitudinal Slot in Each Rigid Boundary

Report discussing the hydrodynamic planing-lift forces of a model of a rectangular jet with several boundaries with slots in them in order to obtain varying boundary solidities. The lift coefficients at the different boundary solidities were compared to computed values from an equation. Information about the effects of boundary solidity, the level of optimum solidity, and the effects of speed is provided.

Material compatibility with gaseous fluorine (open access)

Material compatibility with gaseous fluorine

Static tests on the compatibility of fluorine with non-metals at atmospheric temperature eliminated many materials from further consideration for use in fluorine systems. Several materials were found compatible at atmospheric pressures. Only Teflon and ruby (aluminum oxide) were compatible at 1500 pounds per square inch gage.

Hydrodynamic investigation of a model of a supersonic multijet water-based aircraft with engines exhausting from the step

Report presenting an investigation of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a multijet water-based aircraft capable of supersonic speeds and with jet engines exhausting through the step. The step engine exhausts were found to considerably increase afterbody wetting and smooth-water resistance, but they had no significant effect on longitudinal stability. Results regarding spray characteristics, resistance and stability at constant speed, take-off stability, landing stability, and jet noise are provided.

Two-dimensional cascade tests of NACA 65-(C(sub zeta)(sub o))A(sub 10))10 blade sections at typical compressor hub conditions for speeds up to choking

Report presenting two-dimensional porous-wall cascade tests of specified NACA blade sections at typical compressor hub conditions at speeds up to choking. For typical compressor blade hub sections, the angle of attack for best operation at high Mach numbers is about 6 degrees higher than the design angle of attack for low speeds. Results regarding the 65-series blade tests and circular-arc blade-section tests are provided.
