Unpublished newspaper copy for an article to be headlined "Black Civic Groups Wants [sic] to Honor Veteran Journalist" about the efforts of the Jackson, Mississippi chapter of The Links, Inc. to raise funds to assist Hazel Brannon Smith. Smith was a publisher and journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize for her editorials in support of the civil rights movement, a stance which resulted in her ostracism from local white society and her newspaper's eventual bankruptcy. Aaronetta Pierce (referred to here as A. M. Pierce) passed this unpublished copy of the article on to Margaret Winn, president of the San Antonio chapter. Includes handwritten notes.

[Man and Woman Looking at Poster Art Contest Submissions]

Photograph of an unidentified man and woman looking at submissions for a student poster art contest held at Martin Luther King Middle School. The students have drawn in a variety of media and focused primarily on Dr. King's semblance. Textual information was also used. Although they have not been properly identified, the two adults might be the contest judges. They are in the school's cafeteria, judging by the furnishings and some of the equipment in the back. Accompanying information indicates the contest was held as part of Project LEAD (Links Erase Alcohol and Drugs), a national program initiated to educate youth on the dangers and downfalls of drug abuse.
