The OUED was prompted to write the letter after their president, John H. Sanders Jr., was accused of communist leanings. The letter is sent to the Department of Justice to inquire on the specious statement, which they believe is meant to discredit their civil rights advocacy efforts.

They are writing to ask for a formal retraction on a statement written by Mr. Garcia, quoting T. C. Calvert as the founder of their organization. They claim OUED was founded by multiple individuals, contrary to Mr. Calvert's quote.
