Multivariate searches for single top quark production with the D0 detector

We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in (p{bar p} {yields} t{bar b} + X) and t-channel (p{bar p} {yields} tq{bar b} + X) modes. We have analyzed 230 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at a center-of-mass energy of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. Two separate analysis methods are used: neural networks and a cut-based analysis. No evidence for a single top quark signal is found. We set 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross sections using Bayesian statistics, based on event counts and binned likelihoods formed from the neural network output. The limits from the neural network (cut-based) analysis are 6.4 pb (10.6 pb) in the s-channel and 5.0 pb (11.3 pb) in the t-channel.

A Precise measurement of the B0(s) lifetime (open access)

A Precise measurement of the B0(s) lifetime

The authors report a measurement of the B{sub s}{sup 0} lifetime in the semileptonic decay channel B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} D{sub s}{sup -}{mu}{sup +}{nu}X (and its charge conjugate), using approximately 0.4 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector during 2002-2004. They have reconstructed 5176 D{sub s}{sup -} {mu}{sup +} signal events, where the D{sub s}{sup -} is identified via the decay D{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} {phi}{pi}{sup -}, followed by {phi} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}. Using these events, they have measured the B{sub s}{sup 0} lifetime to be {tau}(B{sub s}{sup 0}) = 1.398 {+-} 0.044 (stat){sub -0.025}{sup +0.028}(syst) ps. This is the most precise measurement of the B{sub s}{sup 0} lifetime to date.

Search for a heavy resonance decaying into a Z+jet final state in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV using the D0 detector

We have searched for a heavy resonance decaying into a Z+jet final state in p{bar p} collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider using the D0 detector. No indication for such a resonance was found in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 370 pb{sup -1}. We set upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction for heavy resonance production at the 95% C.L. as a function of the resonance mass and width. The limits are interpreted within the framework of a specific model of excited quark production.

Search for associated Higgs boson production WH ---> WWW* ---> l+- nu l-prime+- nu-prime + X in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

The authors present a search for associated Higgs boson production in the process p{bar p} {yields} WH {yields} WWW* {yields} {ell}{sup {+-}}{nu} {ell}{prime}{sup {+-}} {nu}{prime} + X in final states containing two like-sign isolated electrons or muons (e{sup {+-}}e{sup {+-}}, e{sup {+-}} {mu}{sup {+-}}, or {mu}{sup {+-}} {mu}{sup {+-}}). The search is based on D0 Run II data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 360-380 pb{sup -1}. No excess is observed over the predicted standard model background. They set 95% C.L. upper limits on {sigma}(p{bar p} {yields} WH) x Br(H {yields} WW*) between 3.2 and 2.8 pb for Higgs masses from 115 to 175 GeV.

Search for excited muons in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96- TeV

We present the results of a search for the production of an excited state of the muon, {mu}*, in proton antiproton collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. The data have been collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 380 pb{sup -1}. We search for {mu}* in the process p{bar p} {yields} {mu}*{nu}, with the {mu}* subsequently decaying to a muon plus photon. No excess above the standard model expectation is observed in data. Interpreting our data in the context of a model that describes {mu}* production by four-fermion contact interactions and {mu}* decay via electroweak processes, we exclude production cross sections higher than 0.057 pb-0.112 pb at the 95% confidence level, depending on the mass of the excited muon. Choosing the scale for contact interactions to be {Lambda} = 1 TeV, excited muon masses below 618 GeV are excluded.

Search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying to tau pairs in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

A search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons {Phi} decaying into {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -} final states in p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV is presented. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 325 pb{sup -1}, were collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Since no excess compared to the expectation from standard model processes is found, limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are set. The results are combined with those obtained from the D0 search for {Phi}b({bar b}) {yields} b{bar b}b({bar b}) and are interpreted in the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

Search for pair production of scalar bottom quarks in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

A search for direct production of scalar bottom quarks ({bar b}) is performed with 310 pb{sup -1} of data collected by the D0 experiment in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The topology analyzed consists of two b jets and an imbalance in transverse momentum due to undetected neutralinos ({tilde {chi}}{sub 1}{sup 0}), with {tilde {chi}}{sub 1}{sup 0} assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. They find the data consistent with standard model expectations, and set a 95% C.L. exclusion domain in the (m{sub {tilde b}}, m{sub {tilde {chi}}}) mass plane, improving significantly upon the results from Run I of the Tevatron.

Search for pair production of second generation scalar leptoquarks in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

The authors report on a search for the pair production of second generation scalar leptoquarks (LQ{sub 2}) in p{bar p} collisions at the center-of-mass energy {radical}s = 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 294 {+-} 19 pb{sup -1} recorded with the D0 detector. No evidence for a leptoquark signal in the LQ{sub 2} {ovr LQ}{sub 2} {yields} {mu}q{mu}q channel has been observed, and upper bounds on the product of cross section times branching fraction were set. This yields lower mass limits of m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 247 GeV for {beta} = {Beta}(LQ{sub 2} {yields} {mu}q) = 1 and m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 182 GeV for {beta} = 1/2. Combining these limits with previous D0 results, the lower limits on the mass of a second generation scalar leptoquark are m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 251 GeV and m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 204 GeV for {beta} = 1 and {beta} = 1/2, respectively.

The authors present the results of the first search for a new particle X produced in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV and subsequently decaying to Z{gamma}. The search uses 0.3 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. They set limits on the production cross section times the branching fraction {sigma}(p{bar p} {yields} X) x B(X {yields} Z{gamma}) that range from 0.4-3.5 pb at the 95% C.L. for X with invariant masses between 100 and 1000 GeV/c{sup 2} over a wide range of X decay widths.

Search for R-parity violating supersymmetry via the LL anti-E couplings lambda(121), lambda(122) or lambda(133) in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

A search for gaugino pair production with a trilepton signature in the framework of R-parity violating supersymmetry via the couplings {lambda}{sub 121}, {lambda}{sub 122}, or {lambda}{sub 133} is presented. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of L {approx} 360 pb{sup -1}, were collected from April 2002 to August 2004 with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center-of-mass energy of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. This analysis considers final states with three charged leptons with the flavor combinations ee{ell}, {mu}{mu}{ell}, and ee{tau} ({ell} = e or {mu}). No evidence for supersymmetry is found and limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the gaugino pair production cross section and lower bounds on the masses of the lightest neutralino and chargino are derived in two supersymmetric models.

Search for resonant second generation slepton production at the Tevatron

The authors present a search for supersymmetry in the R-parity violating resonant production and decay of smuons and muon-sneutrinos in the channels {tilde {mu}} {yields} {tilde {chi}}{sub 1}{sup 0} {mu}, {tilde {mu}} {yields} {tilde {chi}}{sub 2,3,4}{sup 0} {mu}, and {tilde {nu}}{sub {mu}} {yields} {tilde {chi}}{sub 1,2}{sup {+-}} {mu}. They analyzed 0.38 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected between April 2002 and August 2004 with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The observed number of events is in agreement with the standard model expectation, and we calculate 95% C.L. limits on the slepton production cross section times branching fraction to gaugino plus muon, as a function of slepton and gaugino masses. In the framework of minimal supergravity, we set limits on the coupling parameter {lambda}'{sub 211}, extending significantly previous results obtained in Run I of the Tevatron and at the CERN LEP collider.

Search for single production of scalar leptoquarks in p anti-p collisions decaying into muons and quarks with the D0 detector

We report on a search for second generation leptoquarks (LQ{sub 2}) which decay into a muon plus quark in p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV in the D0 detector using an integrated luminosity of about 300 pb{sup -1}. No evidence for a leptoquark signal is observed and an upper bound on the product of the cross section for single leptoquark production times branching fraction {beta} into a quark and a muon was determined for second generation scalar leptoquarks as a function of the leptoquark mass. This result has been combined with a previously published D0 search for leptoquark pair production to obtain leptoquark mass limits as a function of the leptoquark-muon-quark coupling, {lambda}. Assuming {lambda} = 1, lower limits on the mass of a second generation scalar leptoquark coupling to a u quark and a muon are m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 274 GeV and m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 226 GeV for {beta} = 1 and {beta} = 1/2, respectively.

Search for techniparticles in e+jets events at D0

The authors search for the technicolor process ppbar -> rho{sub T}/omega{sub T} ->W+pi{sub T} in events containing one electron and two jets, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 390 pb-1, recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Technicolor predicts that technipions, pi{sub T}, decay dominantly into b-bbar, b-cbar, or bbar-c, depending on their charge. In these events b and c quarks are identified by their secondary decay vertices within jets. Two analysis methods based on topological variables are presented. Since no excess above the standard model prediction was found, the result is presented as an exclusion in the pi{sub T} vs. rho{sub T} mass plane for a given set of model parameters.

Search for the pair production of scalar top quarks in the acoplanar charm jet final state in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

A search for the pair production of scalar top quarks, {bar t}, has been performed in 360 pb{sup -1} of data from p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The {bar t} decay mode considered is {bar t} {yields} c{bar {chi}}{sub 1}{sup 0}, where {bar {chi}}{sub 1}{sup 0} is the lightest supersymmetric particle. The topology analyzed therefore consists of a pair of acoplanar heavy-flavor jets with missing transverse energy. The data show good agreement with the standard model expectation, and a 95% C.L. exclusion domain in the (m{sub {tilde t}}, m{sub {tilde {chi}}{sub 1}{sup 0}}) plane has been determined, extending the domain excluded by previous experiments.

Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson in the p anti-p ---> ZH ---> nu anti-nu b anti-b channel

We report a search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson based on data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 260 pb{sup -1}. We study events with missing transverse energy and two acoplanar b-jets, which provide sensitivity to the ZH production cross section in the {nu}{bar {nu}}B{bar b} channel and to WH production, when the lepton from the W {yields} {ell}{nu} decay is undetected. The data are consistent with the SM background expectation, and we set 95% C.L. upper limits on {sigma}(p{bar p} {yields} ZN/WH) x B(H {yields} b{bar b}) from 3.4/8.3 to 2.5/6.3 pb, for Higgs masses between 105 and 135 GeV.

Search for W-prime boson production in the top quark decay channel (open access)

Search for W-prime boson production in the top quark decay channel

We present a search for the production of a new heavy gauge boson W' that decays to a top quark and a bottom quark. We have analyzed 230 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. No significant excess of events is found in any region of the final state invariant mass distribution. We set upper limits on the production cross section of W bosons at the 95% confidence level for several different W' boson masses. We exclude masses below 610 GeV for a W' boson with standard-model-like couplings, below 630 GeV for a W' boson with right-handed couplings that is allowed to decay to both leptons and quarks, and below 670 GeV for a W' boson with right-handed couplings that is only allowed to decay to quarks.

Ion Deflection for Final Optics In Laser Inertial Fusion Power Plants

Left unprotected, both transmissive and reflective final optics in a laser inertial fusion power plant would quickly fail from melting, pulsed thermal stresses, or degradation of optical properties as a result of ion implantation. One potential option for mitigating this threat is to magnetically deflect the ions such that they are directed into a robust energy dump. In this paper we detail integrated studies that have been carried out to asses the viability of this approach for protecting final optics.

Surface-wave and refraction tomography at the FACT Site, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

We present a technique that allows for the simultaneous acquisition and interpretation of both shear-wave and compressive-wave 3-D velocities. The technique requires no special seismic sources or array geometries, and is suited to studies with small source-receiver offsets. The method also effectively deals with unwanted seismic arrivals by using the statistical properties of the data itself to discriminate against spurious picks. We demonstrate the technique with a field experiment at the Facility for Analysis, Calibration, and Testing at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The resulting 3-D shear-velocity and compressive-velocity distributions are consistent with surface geologic mapping. The averaged velocities and V{sub p}/V{sub s} ratio in the upper 30 meters are also consistent with examples found in the scientific literature.

Evaluation of Ultra Clean Fuels from Natural Gas

ConocoPhillips, in conjunction with Nexant Inc., Penn State University, and Cummins Engine Co., joined with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in a cooperative agreement to perform a comprehensive study of new ultra clean fuels (UCFs) produced from remote sources of natural gas. The project study consists of three primary tasks: an environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a Market Study, and a series of Engine Tests to evaluate the potential markets for Ultra Clean Fuels. The overall objective of DOE's Ultra Clean Transportation Fuels Initiative is to develop and deploy technologies that will produce ultra-clean burning transportation fuels for the 21st century from both petroleum and non-petroleum resources. These fuels will: (1) Enable vehicles to comply with future emission requirements; (2) Be compatible with the existing liquid fuels infrastructure; (3) Enable vehicle efficiencies to be significantly increased, with concomitantly reduced CO{sub 2} emissions; (4) Be obtainable from a fossil resource, alone or in combination with other hydrocarbon materials such as refinery wastes, municipal wastes, biomass, and coal; and (5) Be competitive with current petroleum fuels. Over the last year, the Georgia Tech group has experimentally studied vertical turbulent sheets of water issuing downwards into atmospheric pressure air at Reynolds numbers Re = U{sub 0}{delta}/{nu} = 53,000 and 120,000 and Weber numbers We = {rho}U{sub o} {sup 2}{delta}/{sigma} = 2,900 and 18,000, respectively. Here, U{sub o} is the average jet speed, {delta} is the jet thickness (short dimension) at the nozzle exit ({delta} = 1 cm), and {nu}, {rho} and {sigma} are the kinematic viscosity and density of water and the surface tension at the air-water interface, respectively. These Re and We values are about 50% and 20% of the prototypical values for HYLIFE-II, respectively. In this report, the flow coordinate system is defined so that the origin is at the center of the nozzle exit, with the x-axis along the flow direction, the y-axis along the long dimension of the nozzle, and the z-axis along the short dimension of the nozzle (cf. Fig. 1). Discovery of TeV Gamma-Ray Emission from the Cygnus Region

The diffuse gamma radiation arising from the interaction of cosmic ray particles with matter and radiation in the Galaxy is one of the few probes available to study the origin of the cosmic rays. Milagro is a water Cherenkov detector that continuously views the entire overhead sky. The large field-of-view combined with the long observation time makes Milagro the most sensitive instrument available for the study of large, low surface brightness sources such as the diffuse gamma radiation arising from interactions of cosmic radiation with interstellar matter. In this paper we present spatial and flux measurements of TeV gamma-ray emission from the Cygnus Region. The TeV image shows at least one new source MGRO J2019+37 as well as correlations with the matter density in the region as would be expected from cosmic-ray proton interactions. However, the TeV gamma-ray flux as measured at {approx}12 TeV from the Cygnus region (after excluding MGRO J2019+37) exceeds that predicted from a conventional model of cosmic ray production and propagation. This observation indicates the existence of either hard-spectrum cosmic-ray sources and/or other sources of TeV gamma rays in the region.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 has set in place government activities intended to relieve congestion on the transmission system.
