Permanganate Treatment of DNAPLs in Reactive Barriers and Source Zone Flooding Schemes (open access)

Permanganate Treatment of DNAPLs in Reactive Barriers and Source Zone Flooding Schemes

In situ oxidation with potassium permanganate has been widely evaluated, as a potential remediation method for dissolved or pure DNAPL in groundwater system. The goals of this study are (1) to elucidate the basic mechanisms by which potassium permanganate oxidizes common chlorinated solvents, various constituents in aqueous solution, and porous medium solids, and (2) to assess the potential for chemical oxidation by potassium permanganate to serve as a remedial scheme involving either source zone flooding or reactive barriers. The study is organized with a laboratory component that looks generally at the basic reaction processes and kinetics, and a theoretical component that is developing modeling tools appropriate for designing systems under field conditions.

POWER SUPPLY CONTROL FOR THE SPALLATION NEUTRON SOURCE. (open access)

POWER SUPPLY CONTROL FOR THE SPALLATION NEUTRON SOURCE.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is currently constructing an accumulator ring as part of a six laboratory collaboration to build the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) that will be located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Control of the power supplies will be implemented using a simple integrated system that provides all functions (setpoint, readback, control and status) with a single board at the power converter. Communication between the power supply interface and the VME control card is through a pair of fibers that also provides electrical isolation. This paper describes the power supply control system and it's impact on the SNS.

Preliminary estimates of dose and residual activation of selected components in ring collimation straight of the SNS (open access)

Preliminary estimates of dose and residual activation of selected components in ring collimation straight of the SNS

The highest doses to components in the SNS ring are expected to be to those located in the collimation straight section. In this paper the authors present estimated doses to magnets and cable located between collimators. In addition the buildup of relatively long half-life radioactive isotopes is estimated, following machine operation and shutdown. Finally, the potential dose to operators approaching the machine following operation and shutdown for four hours is made. The results indicate that selected components might require replacement after several years of full power operation. In addition, the reflection of gamma-rays from the tunnel walls contribute a non-negligible amount to the dose of an operator in the tunnel following machine shutdown.

Production Hydraulic Packer Field Test

In October 1999, the Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Center and Halliburton Energy Services cooperated on a field test of Halliburton's new Production Hydraulic Packer technology on Well 46-TPX-10 at Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 3 near Casper, WY. Performance of the packer was evaluated in set and unset operations. The packer's ability to seal the annulus between the casing and tubing was hydraulically tested and the results were recorded.

Ring RF and longitudinal dynamics in the SNS (open access)

Ring RF and longitudinal dynamics in the SNS

Average beam currents of 40 A will be present in the Spallation Neutron Source. Even though the entire cycle time is only one synchrotron oscillation the longitudinal phase space determines peak beam current and momentum spread. Both factors play a role in space charge and instability dynamics. Longitudinal simulations with beam loading and longitudinal space charge have been done in the design phase.

Risk Reduction With a Fuzzy Expert Exploration Tool (open access)

Risk Reduction With a Fuzzy Expert Exploration Tool

Incomplete or sparse information on geologic or formation characteristics introduces a high level of risk for oil exploration and development projects. Expert systems have been developed and used in several disciplines and industries, including medical diagnostics, with favorable results. A state-of-the-art exploration ''expert'' tool, relying on a computerized data base and computer maps generated by neural networks, is proposed through the use of ''fuzzy'' logic, a relatively new mathematical treatment of imprecise or non-explicit parameters and values. This project will develop an Artificial Intelligence system that will draw upon a wide variety of information to provide realistic estimates of risk. ''Fuzzy logic,'' a system of integrating large amounts of inexact, incomplete information with modern computational methods to derive usable conclusions, has been demonstrated as a cost-effective computational technology in many industrial applications. During project year 1, 90% of geologic, geophysical, production and price data were assimilated for installation into the database. Logs provided geologic data consisting of formation tops of the Brushy Canyon, Lower Brushy Canyon, and Bone Springs zones of 700 wells used to construct regional cross sections. Regional structure and isopach maps were constructed using kriging to interpolate between the measured points. One of the structure derivative maps …

Sales Taxes: Electronic Commerce Growth Presents Challenges; Revenue Losses Are Uncertain

A letter report issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the impact of electronic commerce (e-commerce) growth on state and local government sales tax collections, focusing on: (1) how taxes associated with the sale of goods and services over the Internet differ from taxes associated with sales by other remote sellers and in-store sellers; (2) the extent to which each state relies on sales and use tax revenues to fund the services they provide; (3) how much revenue state and local governments are losing this year by not being able to collect sales and use taxes on sales made by all remote sellers and, particularly, by Internet sellers; and (4) how much revenue state and local governments would likely lose in 2003 under various growth scenarios for all remote and Internet sales."

Scaling Law for the Impact of Magnet Fringe Fields (open access)

Scaling Law for the Impact of Magnet Fringe Fields

A general scaling law can be derived for the relative momentum deflection produced on a particle beam by fringe fields, to leading order. The formalism is applied to two concrete examples, for magnets having dipole and quadrupole symmetry. During recent years, the impact of magnet fringe fields is becoming increasingly important for rings of relatively small circumference but large acceptance. A few years ago, following some heuristic arguments, a scaling law was proposed [1], for the relative deflection of particles passing through a magnet fringe-field. In fact, after appropriate expansion of the magnetic fields in Cartesian coordinates, which generalizes the expansions of Steffen [2], one can show that this scaling law is true for any multipole magnet, at leading order in the transverse coefficients [3]. This paper intends to provide the scaling law to estimate the impact of fringe fields in the special cases of magnets with dipole and quadrupole symmetry.
