Induction Accelerator Buncher for Storage Rings (open access)

Induction Accelerator Buncher for Storage Rings

A separate induction accelerator buncher following after the storage rings is one of the options for final bunch compression. The other option is to apply the bunching voltage within the ring, but this requires a low-frequency, high gradient accelerating structure within the ring and a large aperture, which are difficult to do and undesirable. The induction accelerator buncher option here differs from the bunching function in a standard induction accelerator scenario in that here, a separate buncher is required, whereas in the induction linac the bunching function is accomplished by ramping the acceleration voltages near the end of the machine. This is a minor difference, but one that allows consideration of a bipolar buncher, which has no net acceleration. The other major difference is that the currents per beam to be bunched are smaller than in the straight induction linac, permitting use of transversely smaller, and hence less expensive, structures.

Optical, noncontact, automated experimental techniques for three-dimensional reconstruction of object surfaces using projection moire, stereo imaging, and phase-measuring profilometry (open access)

Optical, noncontact, automated experimental techniques for three-dimensional reconstruction of object surfaces using projection moire, stereo imaging, and phase-measuring profilometry

Three optical, noncontact, automated experimental techniques for determining the topography of object surfaces were assessed. The main objective was to test the limitations of three experimental techniques: projection moire, stereo imaging, and phase-measuring profilometry. Phase-measuring profilometry is the most promising of the three techniques for mapping rock fracture surfaces automatically, accurately, quickly, and with high resolution. The experimental set-ups used to assess these different techniques are similar, and they require essentially the same equipment. It is relatively easy and inexpensive to go from one experimental set-up to another. Also, the experience gained in implementing one experimental technique is often applicable in another, although the basic principles of each experimental technique are sometimes very dissimilar.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Performance Studies (open access)

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Performance Studies

Materials research in the area of SOFC`s is also driven by the recognition that processing and operating at lower temperatures would circumvent most of the reliability problems which are currently preventing these devices from achieving wide-scale commercialization. These considerations have directed interdisciplinary research thrusts in this field, namely: Alternate Materials, Processing, and Reliability Issues. This paper describes starting powder characteristics, electrical conductivity and over potential measurements, and resultant microstructures as a function of processing conditions (i.e. powder calcination temperature, and annealing temperature) and composition for the electrolyte and cathodes.

Information systems definition architecture

The Tank Waste Remediation System (TWRS) Information Systems Definition architecture evaluated information Management (IM) processes in several key organizations. The intent of the study is to identify improvements in TWRS IM processes that will enable better support to the TWRS mission, and accommodate changes in TWRS business environment. The ultimate goals of the study are to reduce IM costs, Manage the configuration of TWRS IM elements, and improve IM-related process performance.

Technical basis for classification of low-activity waste fraction from Hanford site tanks

The overall objective of this report is to provide a technical basis to support a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission determination to classify the low-activity waste from the Hanford Site single-shell and double-shell tanks as `incidental` wastes after removal of additional radionuclides and immobilization. The proposed processing method, in addition to the previous radionuclide removal efforts, will remove the largest practical amount of total site radioactivity, attributable to high-level waste, for disposal is a deep geologic repository. The remainder of the waste would be considered `incidental` waste and could be disposed onsite.

MCO Pressurization analysis of spent nuclear fuel transporation and storage (open access)

MCO Pressurization analysis of spent nuclear fuel transporation and storage

A series of analysis were performed to evaluate the pressurization of the Multi-Canister Overpack (MCO) during the stages of transport, processing and storage for expected operational and off normal events. The study examined both MCO sealing and venting issues. Computer models were developed for the MCO and its transport and storage environments using the GOTH and COBRA-TF computer codes. These thermal- hydraulic models included chemical corrosion and ranged in complexity from simple scoping models to full three-dimensional models. Results of the evaluation indicate that overpressurization of the MCO can occur within hours given the bounding reaction surface area and 3.0 Kg of residual water during shipping or 2.5 Kg of residual water during storage. Overpressurization can be prevented during shipping if the MCO reaction surface area is shown to be less than 80,000 cm{sup 2}. During storage the overpressurization can be prevented by limiting the available water.

LLCE burial container high density polyethylene chemical compatibility

An independent chemical compatibility review of LLCE HDPE polyethylene burial containers was conducted to evaluate the container resistance to the chemicals and constituents thought to reside within the Tank Farms. The study concluded that the LLCE Burial Container fabricated from HDPE Polyethylene was a good choice for this application. The reviewer was unaware that the specification for these containers require 2 - 3 percent finely dispensed carbon black which allows long term storage outside.

Plutonium production story at the Hanford site: processes and facilities history

This document tells the history of the actual plutonium production process at the Hanford Site. It contains five major sections: Fuel Fabrication Processes, Irradiation of Nuclear Fuel, Spent Fuel Handling, Radiochemical Reprocessing of Irradiated Fuel, and Plutonium Finishing Operations. Within each section the story of the earliest operations is told, along with changes over time until the end of operations. Chemical and physical processes are described, along with the facilities where these processes were carried out. This document is a processes and facilities history.
