Crossed Sightline ECE Diagnostics (open access)

Crossed Sightline ECE Diagnostics

It was shown that crossed-sightline ECE (electron-cyclotron-emission) can be used for both local measurement of fluctuating quantities (electron temperature and density), and also for inferring the local value of the absolute magnetic field in present experiments, or in a reactor environment. The absolute magnetic field measurement is a direct measure of the local plasma pressure ([beta]) in currentless devices, and in combination with temperature and pressure measurements is a measurement of the plasma current density in devices with significant plasma current. Calculations show that absolute measurements of magnetic field can be made to the order of 0.1%, even in a reactor environment, and that a scanning ECE system could be used to measure the beta profile or current profile in a reactor, as appropriate. The electron temperature fluctuation measurements have a similar resolution, and can also show the phase between density and temperature fluctuations, an extremely important quantity for understanding transport caused by these fluctuations.

Molecular and cellular markers of toxicity in the Japanese Medaka @ (open access)

Molecular and cellular markers of toxicity in the Japanese Medaka @

The Japanese Medaka (Oryzias latipes) has been recommended for use as a model organism to detect carcinogenic, teratogenic, cytotoxic, and genotoxic compounds in aquatic systems. Because a long latent period often occurs between initial contact with deleterious chemicals and subsequent expression of the pathology, we are investigating early biologically-relevant responses that can be used as genotoxicity markers of exposure and effect. This project focuses on the development of genotoxic bioassays and experimental protocols for exposing Japanese Medaka to genotoxic compounds. 21 refs., 8 figs, 2 tabs.

Studies of the formation, chemical reactivity, and properties of small clusters: Application to an understanding of aerosol formation and heterogeneous chemistry (open access)

Studies of the formation, chemical reactivity, and properties of small clusters: Application to an understanding of aerosol formation and heterogeneous chemistry

The small cluster program involves (1) studies of reactions related to formation and growth of heteromolecular clusters and their thermochemical properties, (2) studies of photoinitiated processes in clusters, (3) investigations related to heterogeneous reactions including the influence of reaction centers on the interconversion, and (4) theoretical calculations of properties, dynamics, and structure. A major thrust of the work during the past year has been devoted to a study of the role of ionization and the presence of ions on reactions and energetics. During the past few months, particular attention has been paid to systems having varying proton affinities. From the data, we can determine the influence of these values on the nature of the reactions and ascertain the ultimate chemical nature of the ionization center formed as a result of the reactions. 83 refs., 12 figs., 2 tabs.

Application of parallel computing to the Monte Carlo simulation of electron scattering in solids: A rapid method for profile deconvolution (open access)

Application of parallel computing to the Monte Carlo simulation of electron scattering in solids: A rapid method for profile deconvolution

X-ray microanalysis by analytical electron microscopy (AEM) has proven to be a powerful tool for characterizing the spatial distribution of solute elements in materials. True compositional variations over spatial scales smaller than the actual resolution for microanalysis can be determined if the measured composition profile is deconvoluted. Explicit deconvolutions of such data, via conventional techniques such as Fourier transforms, are not possible due to statistical noise in AEM microanalytical data. Hence, the method of choice is to accomplish the deconvolution via iterative convolutions. In this method, a function describing the assumed true composition profile, calculated by physically permissible thermodynamic and kinetic modeling, is convoluted with the x-ray generation function and the result compared to the measured composition profile. If the measured and calculated profiles agree within experimental error, it is assumed that the true compositional profile has been determined. If the measured and calculated composition profiles are in disagreement, the assumptions in the physical model are adjusted and the convolution process repeated. To employ this procedure it is necessary to calculate the x-ray generation function explicitly. While a variety of procedures are available for calculating this function, the most accurate procedure is to use Monte Carlo modeling of electron scattering.

Viscous flux motion in anisotropic type-II superconductors in low fields (open access)

Viscous flux motion in anisotropic type-II superconductors in low fields

The Bardeen-Stephen model of viscous flux motion in isotropic Type-II superconductors is extended to the anisotropic case characterized by a phenomenological effective mass tensor m{sub ij}. When the magnetic field is low and the vortex lines are aligned along one of the three principal axes, simple expressions for the viscosity tensor {eta}{sub ij} of the viscous flux motion are obtained as functions of m{sub ij} and the normal state conductivity tensor {sigma}{sub ij} for temperature T close to the critical temperature {Tc}. For the high-temperature oxide superconductors the theory predicts that {eta}{sub b}{sup (a)}:{eta}{sub b}{sup (c)}:{eta}{sub c}{sup (a)} {approx} 1:4{gamma}:3{gamma}{sup 2}, where {eta}{sub i}{sup (j)} is the viscosity for the motion along the i-axis of a vortex parallel to the j-axis and {gamma} = {radical}m{sub c}/m{sub a} is the anisotropy parameter (m{sub i}, i = a,b,c, are the principal values of the mass tensor satisfying m{sub a} {approx} m{sub b} {much lt} m{sub c}). 9 refs., 1 fig.
