Advanced, Soluble Hydroliquefaction and Hydrotreating Catalysts Annual Report: 1990-1991 (open access)

Advanced, Soluble Hydroliquefaction and Hydrotreating Catalysts Annual Report: 1990-1991

The purpose of the present program is to develop soluble analogs of surface confined catalysts that can be impregnated directly into the coal structure at low temperatures. This approach should avoid problems related to surface area dependence, a two phase (surface-liquid) reaction system and, mass transport limitations. Heteropolyanions (HPAs) offer the opportunity to develop soluble forms of surface confined catalysts. HPAs are multi-functional catalysts that could be used to promote both hydroliquefaction and hydrotreating. In theory, these functions could be employed sequentially or simultaneously and could permit exceptional control of liquefaction reactions and reaction conditions. Thus, the current research program involves efforts to evaluate HPAs as soluble liquefaction nd hydrotreating catalysts, with the goal of developing soluble analogs of surface confined catalysts.

TITLE III EVALUATION REPORT FOR THE SUBSURFACE LIGHTING SYSTEM

The objective of this evaluation is to provide recommendations to ensure consistency between the technical baseline requirements, baseline design, and the as-constructed Subsurface Lighting System. Recommendations for resolving discrepancies between the as-constructed system, and the technical baseline requirements are included in this report. Cost and Schedule estimates are provided for all recommended modifications. This report does not address items which do not meet current safety or code requirements. These items are identified to the CMO and immediate action is taken to correct the situation. The report does identify safety and code items for which the A/E is recommending improvements. The recommended improvements will exceed the minimum requirements of applicable code and safety guide lines. These recommendations are intended to improve and enhance the operation and maintenance of the facility.

Acousto-optical confirmation of the localized wave phenomena

An acousto-optical measurement method is described which was used to conduct proof of principle experiments for a novel acoustic pulse system. The pulse theory, the Localized Wave pulse, is discussed and the system explained and described. The results of the experiments confirm the Localized Wave theory.

Handling effluent from nuclear thermal propulsion system ground tests (open access)

Handling effluent from nuclear thermal propulsion system ground tests

A variety of approaches for handling effluent from nuclear thermal propulsion system ground tests in an environmentally acceptable manner are discussed. The functional requirements of effluent treatment are defined and concept options are presented within the framework of these requirements. System concepts differ primarily in the choice of fission-product retention and waste handling concepts. The concept options considered range from closed cycle (venting the exhaust to a closed volume or recirculating the hydrogen in a closed loop) to open cycle (real time processing and venting of the effluent). This paper reviews the different methods to handle effluent from nuclear thermal propulsion system ground tests.

Experimental investigations of strong interactions in non-perturbative QCD region (open access)

Experimental investigations of strong interactions in non-perturbative QCD region

We have experimentally investigated the reactions {pi} {sup {minus}}p {yields} {phi}{phi}n (OZI forbidden), {phi}K{sup +}K{sup {minus}}n (OZI allowed), K{sup {minus}}p {yields}{phi}{phi}{l brace}{sub {sigma}}{sup {lambda}}{r brace} (OZI allowed),{phi}K{sup +}K{sup {minus}}{l brace}{sub {sigma}}{sup {lambda}}{r brace}(OZI allowed),{bar p}p {yields} {phi} {phi} {pi} {sup 0} (OZI forbidden), {phi}K{sup +}K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup 0} (OZI allowed). By comparing the OZI forbidden (glueball filter) reactions with the OZI allowed and taking a global view we hope to critically test our hypothesis that the g{sub T} (2010), g{sub T{prime}} (2300), and g{sub T}{double prime}(2340) all with I{sup G}J{sup PC} = 0{sup +}2{sup ++} are produced by 1--3 2{sup ++} glueballs. We have searched for a Quark-Gluon Plasma by using 14.6 GeV/c {times} A Si ions incident on Au, Cu and Si. The novel detector used was a large solid angle TPC system. Although we found considerable strangeness enhancement this is explainable by conventional cascade physics including N* production. We have been engaged in phenomenological analyses in both glueball and heavy ion work. We have found that the {theta}(1720) is the same as the 0{sup ++} f{sub 0}(1720) we discovered earlier. Furthermore that the G(1590) can be explained as a sum of the f{sub 0}(1400) and f{sub 0}(1720) and does …

Summary Report of Laboratory Critical Experiment Analyses Performed for the Disposal Criticality Analysis Methodology

This report, ''Summary Report of Laboratory Critical Experiment Analyses Performed for the Disposal Criticality Analysis Methodology'', contains a summary of the laboratory critical experiment (LCE) analyses used to support the validation of the disposal criticality analysis methodology. The objective of this report is to present a summary of the LCE analyses' results. These results demonstrate the ability of MCNP to accurately predict the critical multiplication factor (keff) for fuel with different configurations. Results from the LCE evaluations will support the development and validation of the criticality models used in the disposal criticality analysis methodology. These models and their validation have been discussed in the ''Disposal Criticality Analysis Methodology Topical Report'' (CRWMS M&O 1998a).
