A 2-D Self-Consistent DSMC Model for Chemically Reacting Low Pressure Plasma Reactors

This paper will focus on the methodology of using a 2D plasma Direct Simulation Monte Carlo technique to simulate the species transport in an inductively coupled, low pressure, chemically reacting plasma system. The pressure in these systems is typically less than 20 mtorr with plasma densities of approximately 10{sup 17} {number_sign}/m{sup 3} and an ionization level of only 0.1%. This low ionization level tightly couples the neutral, ion, and electron chemistries and interactions in a system where the flow is subsonic. We present our strategy and compare simulation results to experimental data for Cl{sub 2} in a Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference cell modified with an inductive coil.

This document reports on work performed by Evergreen Solar, Inc. under this Photovoltaic Manufacturing Technology (PVMaT) subcontract. The purpose of this subcontract was to produce lower module and systems costs through the innovative use of polymeric materials. The impetus behind this approach was the burgeoning use of polymers in such major industries as packaging and automobiles. The market demand in these industries has resulted in whole new areas of high-performance, but low-cost, plastics. These developments created fresh opportunities for photovoltaics. Using this approach, a new backskin material instead of Tedlar{trademark} (Tedlar is a Dupont trademark) or Tedlar{trademark} laminate was developed and tested. This new backskin material allowed us to make a frameless module and novel mounting methods. The latter is referred to as an Innovative Mounting System (IMS). This IMS system, in conjunction with the frameless module, substantially reduces the cost of installed PV systems by reducing labor and materials costs, both in the factory and in field installation. The IMS incorporates several advances in polymers, processing methods, and product design. The advanced backskin material permits elimination of the conventional aluminum perimeter frame, serves to protect and seal the module edge, and allows for direct bonding of multi-functional mounting bars. …

Area Monitoring Dosimeter Program for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory: Results for CY 1998

In January 1993, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) established an area monitoring dosimeter program in accordance with Article 514 of the Department of Energy (DOE) Radiological Control Manual (RCM). The purpose of the program was to minimize the number of areas requiring issuance of personnel dosimeters and to demonstrate that doses outside Radiological Buffer Areas are negligible. In accordance with 10 CFR Part 835.402 (a)(1)-(4) and Article 511.1 of the RCM, personnel dosimetry shall be provided to (1) radiological workers who are likely to receive at least 100 mrem annually and (2) declared pregnant workers, minors, and members of the public who are likely to receive at least 50 mrem annually. Program results for calendar years 1993-1997 confirmed that personnel dosimetry was not needed for individuals located in areas monitored by the program. A total of 97 area thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) were placed in PNNL facilities during calendar year 1998. The TLDs were exchanged and analyzed quarterly. All routine area monitoring TLD results were less than 50 mrem annually after correcting for worker occupancy. The results support the conclusion that personnel dosimeters are not necessary for staff, declared pregnant workers, minors, or members of the public in these monitored areas.

Atomic Resolution Microscopy of Semiconductor Defects and Interfaces

The optical arrangement of the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) allows formation of incoherent images by use of a large annular detector. Here we show this capability in the imaging of defects in GaN and the interfacial region of an Au/GaAs ohmic contact. A resolution of around 0.15 nm is attained. Such Z-contrast images show strong atomic number contrast and allow the probe to be positioned accurately at the defect or interface for the purpose of performing high spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS).

Atomic scale modeling of boron transient diffusion in silicon

We presents results from a predictive atomic level simulation of Boron diffusion in Silicon under a wide variety of implant and annealing conditions. The parameters for this simulation have been extracted from first principle approximation models and molecular dynamics simulations. The results are compared with experiments showing good agreement in all cases. The parameters and reactions used have been implemented into a continuum-level model simulator.

Busted Butte Test Facility Ground Support Confirmation Analysis

The main purpose and objective of this analysis is to confirm the validity of the ground support design for Busted Butte Test Facility (BBTF). The highwall stability and adequacy of highwall and tunnel ground support is addressed in this analysis. The design of the BBTF including the ground support system was performed in a separate document (Reference 5.3). Both in situ and seismic loads are considered in the evaluation of the highwall and the tunnel ground support system. In this analysis only the ground support designed in Reference 5.3 is addressed. The additional ground support installed (still work in progress) by the constructor is not addressed in this analysis. This additional ground support was evaluated by the A/E during a site visit and its findings and recommendations are addressed in this analysis.

The Development of Standardized, Low-Cost AC PV Systems; Final Technical Report; 8 September 1995-30 June 1998

Solar Design Associates, Inc. (SDA), of Harvard, Massachusetts, and Solarex Corporation, of Frederick, Maryland, teamed with Advanced Energy Systems (AES) of Wilton, New Hampshire, to pursue a multi-level program under a Photovoltaic Manufacturing Technology (PVMaT) solicitation. This program was targeted at design innovation, standardization, and modularity, with the goal to deliver low-cost AC PV systems to the utility-interactive market. One significant result of this program is that Solarex filed a U.S. patent application on the new module frame and mounting system that was developed with support from PVMaT. Solarex has already started to manufacture this new combination framing and array mounting system, and a number of residential-scale installations are already in place in the field. The major AES accomplishment under this program was the development of a reliable, FCC-compliant AC module inverter fully listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The inverter passed various environmental tests, including those required by UL (the same temperature and humidity cycling tests that PV modules require), and is now in commercial production.

This project was directed toward the study of neutron-rich nuclei using the experimental facilities at LAMPF, which is a part of LANL. The principal results of the investigation include the discovery of many new isotopes along with a measurement of their masses and in particular those nuclides in the Z = 7--19 and 14 --26 regions of the chart of the nuclides.Thirty-four new nuclides were detected and studied with their masses being measured with relatively high accuracy, and an additional twenty-six that were previously known and measured were remeasured to an improved accuracy. Besides providing new information about the mass surface in new and extended redons of the chart of the nuclides, this investigation enabled properties and previously unknown structure of some of the nuclei to be determined such as nuclear deformation among some of the nuclides. Also a study of the neutron pairing gaps and the proton pairing gaps among these nuclides was made. Other developments also achieved included instrument (TOFI) improvements and upgrades and theoretical investigations into the masses of the hadrons.

Our data suggest a correlation between near-interface strain in SiO{sub 2} and the ratio of fixed vs. mobile positive charge generated at the interface during forming gas annealing. A model based on first-principles quantum mechanical calculations supports this correlation.

Effect of ramp rate and annealing temperature on boron transient diffusion in implanted silicon: kinetic Monte Carlo simulations

We present results of recent kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of the effect of annealing time and ramp rate on boron transient enhanced diffusion (BTED) in low energy ion implanted silicon. The simulations use a database of defect and dopant energetics derived from first principle calculations. We discuss the complete atomistic details of defect and dopant clustering during the anneals, and the dependence of boron TED on ramp rate. The simulations provide a complete time history of the evolution of the active boron fraction during the anneal for a wide variety of conditions. We also studied the lateral spreading of the boron during the annealing for two different conditions, furnace anneal and ramp anneal.

Effect of the beam-beam interactions on the dynamic aperture and amplitude growth in the LHC

The dynamic aperture at collision energy is determined pri-marily by the nonlinear fields of the IR quadrupoles but is also influenced by the beam-beam interactions. We revisit the choice of the crossing angle that maximizes the dynamic aperture with an accurate modeling of the long-range inter-actions and use of the present values of the IR quadrupole field harmonics. A separate but related issue we address is the amplitude growth of particles in the beam halo due to the long-range interactions.
