The classical EMC effect from few-body systems to nuclear matter: Can binding effects explain it

It is shown that if the effects of nucleon binding on deep inelastic scattering are considered within many-body realistic descriptions of nuclei which include nucleon-nucleon correlations, the EMC effect in light and medium weight nuclei and nuclear matter can be accounted for in the region 0.2 {le} x {le} 0.5, but a systematic discrepancy between theory and experiment remains to be explained for 0.5 {le} x {le} 0.9.

Characterization program management plan for Hanford K Basin spent nuclear fuel (open access)

Characterization program management plan for Hanford K Basin spent nuclear fuel

The management plan developed to characterize the K Basin Spent Nuclear Fuel was revised to incorporate actions necessary to comply with the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management Quality Assurance Requirements Document 0333P. This plan was originally developed for Westinghouse Hanford Company and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to work together on a program to provide characterization data to support removal, conditioning, and subsequent dry storage of the spent nuclear fuels stored at the Hanford K Basins. This revision to the Program Management Plan replaces Westinghouse Hanford Company with Duke Engineering and Services Hanford, Inc., updates the various activities where necessary, and expands the Quality Assurance requirements to meet the applicable requirements document. Characterization will continue to utilize the expertise and capabilities of both organizations to support the Spent Nuclear Fuels Project goals and objectives. This Management Plan defines the structure and establishes the roles for the participants providing the framework for Duke Engineering and Services Hanford, Inc. and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to support the Spent Nuclear Fuels Project at Hanford.

Consequences of a postulated tank bump related to Project W-320 (open access)

Consequences of a postulated tank bump related to Project W-320

An analysis was performed of radiological and toxicological consequences of a conservative tank bump scenario which could occur if preventative measures fail and the local sludge temperature exceed the saturation temperature for a long enough period of time to produce a release of this type. Because of the nature of the release, there are no effective mitigative actions which can be taken other than prevention of the tank bump. The unmitigated scenario analyzed here exceeded both onsite and offsite risk guidelines for an anticipated accident.

The X/Q values unit doses for spent nuclear fuel projects (open access)

The X/Q values unit doses for spent nuclear fuel projects

The purpose of this document is to provide a single referenceable document that provides the X/Qs for all the facilities in the spent nuclear fuel projects, and includes the bases for the X/Q calculations. The X/Q values for the nuclear fuel projects were calculated over the past several years. The values currently used in the nuclear fuel project were documented in letter reports and as attached to various PSEs and Safety Analysis documents. Therefore, there is a need to consolidate these documents or reports into a single referenceable document. The final document includes the X/Qs for KE and KW Basins, the cold vacuum drying facility, and the canister storage building.

Estimation of Ni{sup 63}, Pu{sup 241}, Pu{sup 242} and Am{sup 243} from Co{sup 60}, Pu{sup 239}, and Cm{sup 244} activities in groundwater samples (open access)

Estimation of Ni{sup 63}, Pu{sup 241}, Pu{sup 242} and Am{sup 243} from Co{sup 60}, Pu{sup 239}, and Cm{sup 244} activities in groundwater samples

The Part B Permit for F&H Seepage Basins calls for analysis of several constituents of concern in groundwater monitoring wells. Four of these analytes are the radionuclides Ni{sup 63}, Pu{sup 241}, Pu{sup 242}, and Am{sup 243}. These are currently not being analyzed due to their very difficult, tedious analytical schemes coupled with their relatively low activity values. This report demonstrates how the activity value for Ni{sup 63}, a week beta emitter, can be estimated from that of Co{sup 60}, an easily detectable, high-energy gamma emitter. Similarly, estimates of Pu{sup 241}, a beta emitter, and the alpha-emitting Pu{sup 242} can be made from the activity value of the more easily detected Pu{sup 239}. Am{sup 243} can be estimated from the activity of Cm{sup 244}, which is easier to detect because of a shorter half-life (higher specific activity) and the emission of higher energy alpha particles. These correlations are made under very specific parameters in order to ensure the validity of this approach. Therefore, assumptions must be established setting ground rules for establishing these activity relationships. Bases for these assumptions are explained and/or referenced. Their degree of uncertainty limits the accuracy of the data so that the term ``estimate`` is used. Such …

PEPC LRU: Ball Support Assembly (open access)

PEPC LRU: Ball Support Assembly

The PEPC LRU upper ball support assembly consists of a ball and a pneumatic air cylinder/conical seat latching mechanism to be attached to the optics support frame, and a ball attached to the PEPC LRU. Both components are designed to allow manual positioning in three axes. Upon insertion of the PEPC LRU into the structure, the upper pneumatic cylinder is actuated to latch the two assemblies together through the conical seat device to grab the lower ball to support the LRU weight. To be conservative, the design load for the assembly is 1500 pounds (the prototype PEPC LRU weight was measured to be near 1380 pounds).
