Field shape measurements of prototype Main Injector dipole endpacks

Measurements of the transverse dependence of the flux on the symmetry plane were obtained on a series of endpacks mounted on a Main Injector prototype dipole. From these flux measurements, we determined the endfield shape, expressed in terms of normal harmonics, up to 14-pole. We describe the measurement and analysis procedure, and present the results for all endpacks that were tested. The final endpack (number 10) has a sextupole, normalized to the body, of +0.167 [plus minus] .072 units, and the relative field shape deviates by [lt] 1.2 units relative to the on-axis field strength over the range [vert bar]x[vert bar] [lt] 2.0[double prime]. These measurements indicate that Endpack 10 meets the requirements for the Main Injector dipole.

Water and acid absorption tests of samples of a proposed replacement to current polyethylene foam used as fill material on the FB-Line cation columns have been completed. Water and nitric acid solution absorption of up to 4 volume percent was observed over approximately a 4 month period of time. Because of the nuclear safety implications, liquid absorption of a replacement fill material must be low. EthafoaM{trademark} 220 extruded polyethylene, a product available from Dow Chemical Company appears to be a good candidate material for replacement of the existing fill material. Establishment of 5 volume percent solution absorption specification appears to be both reasonable and achievable for a replacement foam, provided it is acceptable to nuclear safety personnel.

Biological Conversion of Synthesis Gas. [Chlorobium Thiosulfatophilum, Chlorobium Phaeobacteroides, and Rhodospirillum Rubrum]

The anaerobic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum has been chosen for catalysis of the biological water gas shift reaction. Two bacteria, Chlorobium thiosulfatophilum and Chlorobium phaeobacteroides, are being evaluated as candidates for H{sub 2}S conversion to elemental sulfur. Since these latter two organisms both grow and convert H{sub 2}S in batch culture using standard basal medium, the choice of a suitable bacterium must be made in consideration of specific growth and uptake rates. Produced elemental sulfur stability against further oxidation to sulfate, and minimal use of H{sub 2} as a producing agent must also be considered. The effects of temperature on the performance of R. rubrum were evaluated. It was found that the cell concentration was highest at temperatures of 25 and 30{degree}C, and that the specific uptake rate was highest at temperatures of 30, 32 and 34{degree}C. No growth was observed at 37{degree}C. Also, temperature did not affect the yield of H{sub 2} from CO. Thus, R. rubrum may be used for biological rates gas shift at any temperature between 30 and 34{degree}C, although growth is maximized at lower temperatures. Testing of the Y-12 Plant Criticality Accident Alarm System detectors at the Sandia Pulsed Reactor Facility

The Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant operates its Criticality Accident Alarm System (CAAS) according to the guidance of Standard ANSI/ANS-8.3-1986. This standard requires that the detector shall not fail to initiate an alarm when subjected to a radiation field of at least 0.1 Gy/s (10 rad/s). It also requires that the system shall be designed to immediately detect the minimum accident of concern and shall produce an alarm within one half second of activation. Sixty-three new detectors that use plastic scintillators have been obtained to upgrade the current Y-12 Plant CAAS. To ensure that these detectors can support the above criteria, testing was done using the SPR III reactor at the Sandia Pulsed Reactor Facility.

A transport-based condensed history algorithm

Condensed history algorithms are approximate electron transport Monte Carlo methods in which the cumulative effects of multiple collisions are modeled in a single step of (user-specified) path length s{sub 0}. This path length is the distance each Monte Carlo electron travels between collisions. Current condensed history techniques utilize a splitting routine over the range 0 {le} s {le} s{sub 0}. For example, the PEnELOPE method splits each step into two substeps; one with length {xi}s{sub 0} and one with length (1 {minus}{xi})s{sub 0}, where {xi} is a random number from 0 < {xi} < 1. because s{sub 0} is fixed (not sampled from an exponential distribution), conventional condensed history schemes are not transport processes. Here the authors describe a new condensed history algorithm that is a transport process. The method simulates a transport equation that approximates the exact Boltzmann equation. The new transport equation has a larger mean free path than, and preserves two angular moments of, the Boltzmann equation. Thus, the new process is solved more efficiently by Monte Carlo, and it conserves both particles and scattering power.

Report on the international workshop on cold moderators for pulsed neutron sources.

The International Workshop on Cold Moderators for Pulsed Neutron Sources resulted from the coincidence of two forces. Our sponsors in the Materials Sciences Branch of DOE's Office of Energy Research and the community of moderator and neutron facility developers both realized that it was time. The Neutron Sources Working Group of the Megascience Forum of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development offered to contribute its support by publishing the proceedings, which with DOE and Argonne sponsorship cemented the initiative. The purposes of the workshop were: to recall and improve the theoretical groundwork of time-dependent neutron thermalization; to pose and examine the needs for and benefits of cold moderators for neutron scattering and other applications of pulsed neutron sources; to summarize experience with pulsed source, cold moderators, their performance, effectiveness, successes, problems and solutions, and the needs for operational data; to compile and evaluate new ideas for cold moderator materials and geometries; to review methods of measuring and characterizing pulsed source cold moderator performance; to appraise methods of calculating needed source characteristics and to evaluate the needs and prospects for improvements; to assess the state of knowledge of data needed for calculating the neutronic and engineering performance of cold moderators; …

Cryogenic moderator simulations : confronting reality.

The Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) at Argonne National Laboratory is a spallation neutron source dedicated to materials research. Its three cryogenic methane moderators provide twelve neutron beams to fourteen instruments and test facilities. This report concerns ongoing activities for benchmarking our Monte Carlo model of the IPNS neutron generation system. This paper concentrates on the techniques (both experimental and calculational) used in such benchmarking activities.

Proposed sealing field tests for a potential high-level radioactive waste repository in unsaturated tuff

This paper contains a general description of the field tests proposed for the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project repository sealing program. The tests are intended to resolve various performance and emplacement concerns associated with sealing components. Ten discrete tests are proposed to address these concerns. These tests are divided into two categories -- simple and complex tests. The simple tests are: the small-scale in situ tests: the intermediate-scale borehole seal tests; the fracture grouting tests; the surface backfill tests; and the grouted rock mass tests. The complex tests are the seepage control tests; in situ backfill tests; in situ bulkhead tests; large-scale shaft seal tests; and remote borehole seal tests. These tests are proposed to be performed in welded and nonwelded tuff environments. The final selection of sealing tests will depend on the nature of the geologic and hydrologic conditions encountered during the development of the exploratory studies facility. Some tests may be performed before license application and some after license application.

Residual Stress Measurements with Laser Speckle Correlation Interferometry and Local Heat Treating

A new experimental technique has been devised to measure residual stresses in ductile materials with a combination of laser speckle pattern interferometry and spot heating. The speckle pattern interferometer measures in-plane deformations while the heating provides for very localized stress relief. The residual stresses are determined by the amount of strain that is measured subsequent to the heating and cool-down of the region being interrogated. A simple lumped parameter model is presented to provide a description of the method. This description is followed by presentations of the results of finite element analyses and experimental results with uniaxial test specimens. Excellent agreement between the experiments and the computer analyses were obtained.

Time-resolved observation of discrete and continuous MHD dynamo in the reversed-field pinch edge

We report the first experimental verification of the MHD dynamo in the RFP. A burst of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) dynamo electric field is observed during the sawtooth crash, followed by an increase in the local parallel current in the MST RFP edge. By measuring each term, the parallel MHD mean-field Ohm`s law is observed to hold within experimental error bars both between and during sawtooth crashes.

Natural hazards phenomena mitigation with respect to seismic hazards at the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility

This report provides information on the seismic hazard for design of the proposed Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF), a facility designed for the disposal of wastes generated during the cleanup of Hanford Site aggregate areas. The preferred ERDF site is located south and east of 200 East and 200 West Areas. The Washington State Groundwater Protection Program (WAC 173-303-806 (4)(a)(xxi)) requires that the characteristics of local and regional hydrogeology be defined. A plan for that work has been developed (Weekes and Borghese 1993). In addition, WAC 173-303-282 provides regulatory guidance on siting a dangerous waste facility, and US Department of Energy (DOE) Order 5480.28 requires consideration of natural phenomena hazards mitigation for DOE sites and facilities. This report provides information to evaluate the ERDF site with respect to seismic hazard. The ERDF will be a Corrective Action Management Unit (CAMU) as defined by 40 CFR 260.10.
