Japanese and U.S. Economic Involvement in Asia and the Pacific: Comparative Data and Analysis

In a world in which economic and trade performance are fast gaining acceptance as important components of national power and well being, Congress has become increasingly interested in the comparative success of U.S. business in the vast, rapidly growing Asia-Pacific region. For the most part, Congress has tended to view Japan as the main competitor of the United States in Asian markets and the standard against which U.S. success is measured. The stakes for the United States are considerable. Exclusive of Japan, the Asia-Pacific region accounted for $ 92 billion in U.S. exports in 1993 and $ 138 billion in imports, or about 20 percent of total U.S. exports and 24 percent of U.S. global imports. A number of projections indicate that Asia will account for the largest share of world trade growth in the next decade. Japan's growing economic presence has been accompanied by a relative increase in its political influence vis-a-vis that of the United States, a factor of considerable long term significance for U.S. interests, and it would appear the availability of alternative Asian markets has strengthened Japan's resistance to U.S. trade demands.

A computerized welder qualification record and tracking system

Accurately tracking welder qualification and assigning welders to jobs for which they are qualified is becoming more important as customers increasingly demand improved quality and conformance to industry standards. A computerized welder qualification records and tracking system (WPQ) was developed at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant to assist the user in this process. The system enables the user to consistently generate welder qualification records with minimal effort and increased accuracy, relate the welder qualification limits with the limits of the welding procedure specification, generate a printout which reports essential information for selecting qualified welders, and provide a method for updating welders based on process usage as permitted by the codes. Codes addressed by the system include American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section IX, American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1, AWS D1.3 and AWS D9.1

If the US is to meet the energy needs of the future, it is essential that new technologies emerge to compensate for dwindling supplies of fossil fuels and the eventual depletion of fissionable uranium used in present-day nuclear reactors. Fusion energy has the potential to become a major source of energy for the future. Power from fusion energy would provide a substantially reduced environmental impact as compared with other forms of energy generation. Since fusion utilizes no fossil fuels, there would be no release of chemical combustion products to the atmosphere. Additionally, there are no fission products formed to present handling and disposal problems, and runaway fuel reactions are impossible due to the small amounts of deuterium and tritium present. The purpose of the TPX Project is to support the development of the physics and technology to extend tokamak operation into the continuously operating (steady-state) regime, and to demonstrate advances in fundamental tokamak performance. The purpose of TFTR D&D is to ensure compliance with DOE Order 5820.2A ``Radioactive Waste Management`` and to remove environmental and health hazards posed by the TFTR in a non-operational mode. Application of MACH2 to explosive magnetic flux compression generators: Improvements in detonation modeling. Final report

Dramatic improvements have been made to the detonation modeling capability recently incorporated into MACH2. These improvements significantly improve the flexibility of the detonation model, allow for accurate depiction of real explosives, and permit highly efficient modeling of long, coaxial generators. In this document, we will first describe these improvements in some detail. We will then discuss the calibration of the detonation model to two explosive materials, PBX9501 and PBXN110. Finally, we will demonstrate the code`s capability for modeling long, coaxial magnetocumulative generators.

Adsorption air conditioner for electric vehicle applications. Revision 1

This paper shows an analysis of the applicability of an adsorption system for electric vehicle (EV) air conditioning. Adsorption systems are designed and optimized to provide the required cooling for four combinations of vehicle characteristics and driving cycles. The resulting adsorption systems are compared with vapor compression air conditioners that can satisfy the cooling load. The objective function is the overall system weight, which includes the cooling system weight and the weight of the battery necessary to provide energy for air conditioner operation. The system with the minimum overall weight is considered to be the best, because a lower weight results in an increased vehicle range. The results indicate that, for the conditions analyzed in this paper, vapor compression air conditioners are superior to adsorption systems not only because they are lighter, but also because they have a higher COP and are more compact.

Chemical synthesis, characterization and separation studies of functionalized polymeric supports. Final report

Polymer resins with immobilized phosphorus acid ligands have been used to remove metal ions from solutions over wide pH range. These resins offer selective removal of metal ions under acidic conditions through coordination with the phosphoryl oxygen. Use of poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) foams as supports for phosphorus-based ligands is examined in this report. Foams with large pore volumes as supports offer an advantage over gel and macroporous beads in that the increased porosity could lead to increased rates of metal ion complexation, and the larger pore size allows the use of more hydrophobic ligands such as phosphonate esters in metal ion complexations from aqueous solutions. Effects of crosslinking and sulfonation on metal ion complexation are also studied.

Computer-controlled radiation monitoring system

A computer-controlled radiation monitoring system was designed and installed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory`s Multiuser Tandem Laboratory (10 MV tandem accelerator from High Voltage Engineering Corporation). The system continuously monitors the photon and neutron radiation environment associated with the facility and automatically suspends accelerator operation if preset radiation levels are exceeded. The system has proved reliable real-time radiation monitoring over the past five years, and has been a valuable tool for maintaining personnel exposure as low as reasonably achievable.

Field Quality Improvements in Superconducting Magnets for RHIC

A number of techniques have been developed and tested to improve the field quality in the superconducting dipole and quadrupole magnets to be used in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These include adjustment in the coil midplane gap to compensate for the allowed and non-allowed harmonics, inclusion of holes and cutouts in the iron yoke to reduce the saturation-induced harmonics, and magnetic tuning shims to correct for the residual errors. We compare the measurements with the calculations to test the validity of these concepts.

Light Duty Utility Arm interface control document plan

This document describes the interface control documents that will be used to identify and control interface features throughout all phases of the Light Duty Utility Arm (LDUA) development and design. After the system is built, delivered and installed in the Cold Test Facility and later at the tank farm, the Interface Control Documents can be used in maintaining the configuration control process. The Interface Control Document will consist of Interface Control Drawings and a data base directly tied to the Interface Control Drawings. The data base can be used as an index to conveniently find interface information. Design drawings and other text documents that contain interface information will appear in the database. The Interface Control Drawings will be used to document and control the data and information that define the interface boundaries between systems, subsystems and equipment. Also, the interface boundaries will define the areas of responsibility for systems and subsystems. The drawing will delineate and identify all the physical and functional interfaces that required coordination to establish and maintain compatibility between the co-functioning equipment, computer software, and the tank farm facilities. An appendix contains the Engineering interface control database system riser manual.

The data described in this report were collected as part of a project to explore the viability of passive soil vapor extraction techniques for removal of volatile organic contaminants from the subsurface. The principal objectives of this project are to determine the mechanism and physical dynamics of the relationship between surface atmospheric pressure and subsurface flow and contaminant transport, and to use this information to design cost effective and efficient remediation systems. This work is funded under the Volatile Organic Compounds - Arid Integrated Demonstration (VOC - Arid ID). The purpose of the VOC - Arid ID is to identify, develop, and demonstrate technologies that may be used to characterize, remediate, and/or monitor and or semiarid sites containing VOC (e.g., carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethylene [TCE]) with or without associated metal and radionuclide contamination. The results from this project are applicable at arid, semi-arid, and non-arid sites. This report documents the methods and findings from the Savannah River Site barometric pumping study.
