The objective of this analysis is to explore the Westinghouse mixed-oxide (MOX) and Combustion Engineering MOX assembly waste package (WP) resistance to rock fall, slap-down, and two meter drop events. This analysis will be used to evaluate the structural performance of the waste packages. The purpose of this analysis is to document the models and methods used in the calculations. The results of this analysis are not intended to show direct compliance with any design requirements.

Recently, Xiang and Wheatley extended our proximity coupling SN model of the (S) CuO{sub 2} plane and (N) CuO chain layers in YBCO compounds, using the single particle bands {epsilon}{sup 0}{sub 1k} = -t(cos k{sub a} + cos k{sub b}) - {mu}{sub 1} and {epsilon}{sup 0}{sub 2k} = -t{sub 2y}cos k{sub b} - {mu}{sub 2}, respectively. Although we showed that it was possible to fit the penetration depth {lambda}{sub ab}(T) in twinned YBCO with either s- or d-wave pairing and both bands free-particle-like, they claimed that: (1) It is impossible to fit the quasi-linear {lambda}{sub a}(T) in untwinned YBCO without order parameter line nodes, such as for d{sub x2-y2} pairing. (2) Even d-wave SN fits to the {lambda}{sub a,b,c} data are inferior to those obtained from a model of d-wave interlayer pair tunneling (DIPT). We remark that their claim is false, and ignores other data favoring proximity coupling.

The People's Republic of China (PRC)'s provocative use of military force in the Taiwan Strait has appeared to subside, but not before convincing many in the Congress that the PRC regime continues to flout international norms sensitive to the United States. In addition to challenging stability in the Taiwan Strait, the PRC is seen recently to undermine important U.S. interests regarding nuclear proliferation, intellectual property rights, and missile proliferation. As a result, many in the Congress are pressing for actions -- including economic and other sanctions

Studies have estimated that some of these revisions would cause a decline in demand for houses and significant reduction in house prices--perhaps in excess of 15 percent. These studies, however, presumed a fixed supply of housing; even a limited supply response would greatly decrease predicted asset price effects. Supply response is likely to be large in the long run and not insignificant in the short run. Effects on housing demand might also be mitigated by increases in savings rates and lower interest rates. Thus, effects of the flat tax on housing prices are likely to be limited in the short run and very small in the long run. Rental housing demand, on the other hand, would be encouraged with a shift to a consumption tax base.

This report discusses legislative initiatives underway to tighten emission standards, produce cleaner cars, and develop alternative fuels, such as clean gasoline, natural gas, ethanol, and electricity. A vertical calciner will be used to demonstrate the direct denitration process for converting plutonium-bearing liquors to stable plutonium rich solids. The calciner and come of its associated equipment were previously tested with non-radioactive chemicals to demonstrate operability.

Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC) is exploring commercial methods for retrieving waste from the underground storage tanks at the Hanford site in south central Washington state. WHC needs data on commercial retrieval systems equipment in order to make programmatic decisions for waste retrieval. Full system testing of retrieval processes is to be demonstrated in phases through September 1997 in support of programs aimed to Acquire Commercial Technology for Retrieval (ACTR) and at the Hanford Tanks Initiative (HTI). One of the important parts of the integrated testing will be the deployment of retrieval tools using manipulator-based systems. WHC requires an assessment of a number of commercial deployment systems that have been identified by the ACTR program as good candidates to be included in an integrated testing effort. Included in this assessment should be an independent evaluation of manipulator tests performed to date, so that WHC can construct an integrated test based on these systems. The author discusses the mass parameters appearing in the gauge theory of the strong interactions, concentrating on the two flavor case. He shows how the effect of the CP violating parameter {theta} is simply interpreted in terms of the state of the aether via an effective potential for meson fields. For degenerate flavors he shows that a first order phase transition is expected at {theta} = {pi}. The author speculates on the implications of this structure for Wilson`s lattice fermions.
