Current Abstracts Nuclear Reactors and Technology (open access)

Current Abstracts Nuclear Reactors and Technology

This publication Nuclear Reactors and Technology (NRT) announces on a monthly basis the current worldwide information available from the open literature on nuclear reactors and technology, including all aspects of power reactors, components and accessories, fuel elements, control systems, and materials. This publication contains the abstracts of DOE reports, journal articles, conference papers, patents, theses, and monographs added to the Energy Science and Technology Database during the past month. Also included are US information obtained through acquisition programs or interagency agreements and international information obtained through acquisition programs or interagency agreements and international information obtained through the International Energy Agency`s Energy Technology Data Exchange or government-to-government agreements. The digests in NRT and other citations to information on nuclear reactors back to 1948 are available for online searching and retrieval on the Energy Science and Technology Database and Nuclear Science Abstracts (NSA) database. Current information, added daily to the Energy Science and Technology Database, is available to DOE and its contractors through the DOE Integrated Technical Information System. Customized profiles can be developed to provide current information to meet each user`s needs.

DOE Fundamentals Handbook: Electrical Science, Volume 1

Abstract: The Electrical Science Fundamentals Handbook was developed to assist nuclear facility operating contractors provide operators, maintenance personnel, and the technical staff with the necessary fundamentals training to ensure a basic understanding of electrical theory, terminology, and application. The handbook includes information on alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) theory, circuits, motors, and generators; AC power and reactive components; batteries; AC and DC voltage regulators; transformers; and electrical test instruments and measuring devices. This information will provide personnel with a foundation for understanding the basic operation of various types of DOE nuclear facility electrical equipment.

Superconducting Magnet Technology for Future Hadron Colliders (open access)

Superconducting Magnet Technology for Future Hadron Colliders

The application of superconducting magnets to large-scale particle accelerators was successfully demonstrated with the completion of the Tevatron at Fermilab in 1983. This machine, utilizing dipole magnets operating at 4.5 T, has been operating successfully for the past 12 years. This success was followed a few years later by HERA, an electron-proton collider that uses superconducting quadrupoles and dipoles of a design similar to those in the Tevatron. The next major project was the ill-fated SSC, which was cancelled in 1993. However, the SSC R&D effort did succeed in demonstrating the reliable operation of dipole magnets up to 6.6 T. The LHC, now under construction, pushes the ductile superconductor, NbTi, to its limit in dipoles designed to operate at fields of 8.6 T at 1.8 K. Several recent studies have addressed the issues involved in taking the next step beyond the LHC. The Division of Particles and Fields Workshop on Future Hadron Facilities in the U.S., held at Indiana U. in 1994, examined two possible facilities--a 2-TeV on 2-TeV collider and a 30-Tev on 30-Tev collider. The participants arrived at the following conclusions with regard to superconducting magnets: (1) Superconducting magnets are the enabling technology for high energy colliders. As …

Relativistic effects and relativistic methods (open access)

Relativistic effects and relativistic methods

In the past, the vast majority of nuclear physics calculations were carried out using nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Relativistic effects were usually regarded as small corrections, primarily kinematic in origin. However, as understanding of hadronic matter has developed, and as high energy accelerators capable of probing hadronic systems to very high momenta become available, interest in relativistic methods has grown and theoretical techniques have matured. Until the early 1980's, most research was centered on methods for computing relativistic corrections to calculations which are essentially non-relativistic. The idea was to find corrections to lowest order in (v/c){sup 2}, where v is a typical particle velocity regarded as small compared to nuclear energies and masses. Recent work goes far beyond such expansion methods. Fully covariant approaches, in which the dynamics is closely connected to field theory, are now being developed.
