ELEMENT 98 (open access)

ELEMENT 98

Definite identification has been made of an isotope of the element with atomic number 98 through the irradiation of Cm{sup 242} with 35 Mev helium ions in the Berkeley Orocker Laboratory 60-inch cyclotron. The isotope which has been identified has an observed half-life of about 45 minutes and probably has the mass number 244. The observed mode of decay of the 98{sup 244} is through the emission of alpha-particles, with energy about 7.1 Mev, which agrees with predictions, and other considerations involving the systematics of radioactivity in this region indicate that it should also be unstable toward decay by electron-capture. The chemical separation and identification of the new element was accomplished through the use of ion exchange adsorption methods employing the resin Dowex-50. The element 98 isotope appears in the eka-dysprosium position on elution curves containing 4.6-hour Bk{sup 243} (formed by a d,n reaction in the same bombardment) and the bombarded Cm{sup 242} as reference points; that is, it preceded berkelium and curium off the column just as dysprosium precedes terbium and gadolinium. The experiments so far have revealed only the tripositive oxidation state of eka-dysprosium character but practically no attempts at oxidation to possible IV and V states have …

The Separation of Trace Amounts of Radioactive Cs From Macro Quanitites of Sodium and Potassium Salts (open access)

The Separation of Trace Amounts of Radioactive Cs From Macro Quanitites of Sodium and Potassium Salts

Summary: A method for the separation of cesium from macro quantities of sodium and potassium using an ion exchange resin, Dowex 50, has been developed. A 95% recovery of cesium with a reduction of the solid content of 95% was found possible. Curves illustrating the effect of acidity, column length, and flow rate are presented in the report. The sodium form, hydrogen form and ammonium form of Dowex 50 were investigated; the hydrogen form was found to give the best separation.

Niobium Phase Diagrams : Manuscript Report on Niobium-Oxygen System (open access)

Niobium Phase Diagrams : Manuscript Report on Niobium-Oxygen System

Abstract: "The niobium-oxygen equilibrium has been determined by metallographic examination of arc-cast alloys made of electron-gun-refined niobium metal and special purity niobium pentoxide. Two intermediate oxides, NbO and NbO2, melt without decomposition at 1945 C and 1915 C, respectively. Eutectic reactions exist between niobium and NbO and 1915 C and between NbO and NbO2 at 1810 C. Experimental supports a peritectic reaction between NbO2 and Nb2O5 1510 C. The maximum solid solubility of oxygen in niobium metal is 0.72 weight per cent."

The Effects of Ternary Alloying Additions on the Corrosion Resistance of Epsilon-Phase Uranium-Zirconium Alloys (open access)

The Effects of Ternary Alloying Additions on the Corrosion Resistance of Epsilon-Phase Uranium-Zirconium Alloys

Abstract: "The corrosion rate in 680 F water of the uranium-50 w/o zirconium binary alloy was found to be -0.20 mg/(cm2)(hr), and that of the uranium-40 w/o zirconium binary alloy was -0.34 mg/(cm2)(hr). Both alloys correlated uniformly, with no evidence of discontinuous failure. Normal variations in interstitial content in either alloy had no significant effect on corrosion behavior. Tantalum additions, in the range of 0.2 to 5 w/o, improved the corrosion rate of the uranium-50 w/o zirconium base, with a minimum rate of -0.06 mg/(cm2)(hr) for the 5 w/o tantalum alloy. The 5 w/o tantalum addition to the uranium-40 w/o zirconium alloy. The 5 w/o tantalum addition to the uranium-40 w/o zirconium alloy decreased the corrosion rate of the base to -0.11 mg/(cm2)(hr) in the [...] condition only. In either conditions, the 5 w/o tantalum alloy failed discontinuously. All other additions to both bases either had no effect or decreased corrosion resistance. These included aluminum, chromium, iron, molybdenum, nickel, platinum, tin, titanium, tungsten, and vanadium additions."

Thermal Distortion of SAR Hafnium Control Rod (open access)

Thermal Distortion of SAR Hafnium Control Rod

Abstract: The thermal distortion of a Y-shaped hafnium control rod heated by arrays of individually controlled radiation heaters was studied. The large axial and radial temperature gradients specified for this control rod were easily obtained with the radiation-heating method. The distortion, as measured with dial indicators, amounted to a 2-mil movement of the free end of the rod in the direction of the coolest blade.

200 Area waste storage study

As a part of the five year budget study requested by HOO-AEC, a study of separations waste storage requirements for this period was made. This study took into consideration the variant estimates of amount of irradiated uranium to be processed, and the goals in the waste reduction research and development program. The conclusions of this study were at variance, to some extent, with prior studies. Interest has been expressed in publication of this study to permit independent assessment of its bases and assumptions.
