Density and Hydrogen Content of Uranium Oxide Cakes and Slurries

The work described was undertaken to provide data for nuclear safety studies concerning NPF reprocessing equipment. The original objective was to determine the uranium density and water (hydrogen) content of UO2-H2O mixtures ranging from compact centrifuge cakes to dilute slurries. The scope was later expanded to include mixtures of UO2 with hydrocarbon oil and mixtures of UO3-H2O.

Physical Properties of Neutralized Zirflex Waste (open access)

Physical Properties of Neutralized Zirflex Waste

Zirflex cladding waste is to be neutralized to pH 10 before transfer to waste storage tanks. This treatment causes the precipitation of zirconium oxide or hydroxide, which may lead to flow difficulties during transfer. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the physical properties and flow characteristics of the neutralized slurry to assist in the selectin of satisfactory transfer equipment and storage conditions.

Regeneration of Silver Reactors (open access)

Regeneration of Silver Reactors

A study of the variables involved in regeneration was undertaken to determine means of improving the regeneration efficiency and increasing the useful life of a reactor. Information gained from regeneration studies on a 4-inch-diameter by 8-foot-high column indicates that the present regeneration procedure is optimum as to quantity, concentration, and rate of addition of regenerant solution. It appears feasible to restore a plugged reactor by washing off all the silver nitrate from the packing and recoating by a normal regeneration cycle. Such a procedure could be utilized only if there is sufficient dead space in the bottom of the reactor to hold the wash solution.

Occurrence of Technetium in Nature : Final Report for the Period November 1, 1954 to August 31, 1955

Twelve neutron activation analyses for naturally occurring technetium-98 were performed. Positive results were obtained in ten cases. Precautions were taken to avoid interference by molybdenum and technetium-99. the cross section for the reaction [formula] as found to be equal to 4 +- 2 mb for the neutron spectrum of the vertical thimbles of the Argonne CP-5 reactor. The chemical state of molybdenum (VI) in basic solution was studied by an anion-exchange technique. Evidence was obtained for the existence of polymeric species at pH-values up to 14. Preliminary work on the stability of Domax-1 anion exchange resin in perchlorate media indicates rapid deterioration even at 0.2F ClO4-.

LRL-Nevada Drill Hole Survey Technique (open access)

LRL-Nevada Drill Hole Survey Technique

The demands of the scientific programs of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at the Nevada Test Site have necessitated the development of special drill hole survey techniques. These techniques, in general, have made possible the attainment of greater survey accuracies than are ordinarily obtained by the drilling industry in the course of normal survey work. For drill holes requiring a moderately high degree of location accuracy, standard survey equipment, manufactured by Eastman Oil Well Survey Company was adapted by LRL to meet this need. Where an extremely high degree of survey accuracy and control of drilling effort is necessary, such as in the drilling and survey of line-of-sight holes, special optical equipment was developed. The modifications of equipment, refinements in procedures, and special techniques necessary to adapt this equipment to meet the more demanding accuracy requirements of scientific programs are discussed. The overall techniques of survey, equipment used, and the accuracies obtained together with results of completed surveys showing a comparison with standard land survey methods are also discussed and illustrated in some detail.

Potential Nitrate Decomposition High Level Waste Storage

It is recommended that self-concentration of Purex wastes should not be started until much more complete knowledge is obtained of the conditions and reactions in these wastes. The presently planned tests in the Semi-Works will be a practical demonstration of the problems but will be of little value on the initial Purex wastes as these tests are being run almost concurrent with the filling of the first Purex storage tank.
